Super Mario Bros. (also known as Super Mario Bros.: The Movie) is a 1993 fantasy adventure film based on Nintendo's Super Mario video game series. The first feature-length live-action film based on a video game, it was directed by the husband-and-wife team of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, written by Parker Bennett, Terry Runté, and Ed Solomon, and distributed by Buena Vista Pictures through Hollywood Pictures. It follows brothers Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi Mario (John Leguizamo) in their quest to rescue Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis) from a dystopic parallel universe ruled by the ruthless President Koopa (Dennis Hopper).

Woo-hoo! Looking forward to the rest of the month.
Can you please finish reviewing the Ice Age movies from last year?
This is gonna be SO great! Love it🎉🎉🎉🎉 hearth please ❤❤❤❤❤
You know, since your opinion for this movie has changed, I think I got an idea for a new segment for the Nostalgia Critic where you can re-review movies from your older episodes with a newer perspective. Space Jam, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie, Mortal Kombat, Captain Planet, etc.
BTW, I hope you review some Jetix shows (like Yin Yang Yo!) for this year's Disneycember!
8:21 And your right. He agreed to play a character in the movie just to buy his six year old son (at the time) new shoes. His son questioned him about why he is playing King Koopa and after Dennis told him his reason, he said and quoted “I don't need shoes that badly.”
I'm sorry but Dennis Hooper saying the word “monkey” in a joyful tone is comedy gold and I love it so much.
Bob-omb!
Agreed, it always cracks me up.
When I saw the trailer for Kingdom of the play of the apes, all I heard was Dennis Hopper saying monkey
He really was a great actor even in movies he hated. same with texas chainsaw 2
"Go goomba!"
You have to give credits where it's due.
Bob did a very good job as Mario, and he had no ideas who is the character, till he saw his son playing Super Mario Bros.
It's sincerely adorable as a fact.
Speaking of an adorable fact, when his son heard he was doing a Mario movie, he wouldn't talk to his father for a week because Bob couldn't take him to meet Mario 😅
Day 60 waiting for the ,,G-force" movie review by the ,,Nostalgia Critic" Pretty please!
I honestly thought he was a better Mario than Chris Pratt
Bob Hoskins' cast was one of the best ones, despite his huge dislike of this film he really was giving it his all.
@@liamdude5722 Chris did a rather good job, people need to stop being blinded by nostalgia.
Like i adore Charles, but Mario WASN'T always voiced by him.
And that, people failed to realize that.
So what make Chris "worse", it's because a childish and bland actress "called him out" over what he's not responsible of?
People need to give him a break with their stupid mob mentality, they look like fools, except they are mentally ill.
And i refuse to have empathy over them, so if they are angry that Chris got a role, it's karma.
People are insane, they think they know "everything" but know nothing, they heard a random saying said rumors and they partaked in it,
They will never be sucessfull nor loved by any sane people.
True story, this film was such a nightmare that everyone got Drunk or high while filming. The crew one day had weed and Hoskins walked by like “Is that… Marijuana?” They said yeah, and Bob said “WHY DIDNT YOU SAY SO? I’ve been alone in my rental house, come on now with me!”
Aren't Hoskins AND Leguizamo both really drunk in the scene where they're driving the van?
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer Oh yeah, plastered. That’s how Bob broke his pinky
@@a.f.watcher8888and you can't forget the story Hopper told about when his son saw it. He goes and tells his kid he did it so his son could have shoes and then his kid tells him he didn't need shoes that badly.

Why is this a Disneycember vid?
It's quite an experience looking back on this now that an actual Mario Bros movie exists. This film is bad, but it's definitely one of the best "so bad it's good" movies out there. An insane, convoluted plot, wild scenery, hilariously bad acting, and Bob Hoskins, the best Mario ever after Martinet. It's the movie you love to make fun of.
Bob Hoskins is yhe highlight for me.
This movie still has more soul than the new mario movie
It really is a fun ride

Day 60 waiting for the ,,G-force" movie review by the ,,Nostalgia Critic" Pretty please!
Fun fact.
One reason Dennis Hopper sounds like that is because the directors kept rewriting the script and reshooting so many times he intentionally started phoning it in because he knew it probably would be changed later.
weird to think it's been over 15 years since doug first reviewed this
The gap of time between when this movie was made and Doug first reviewed it is now the same size as the gap of time between Doug first reviewing it and now.
Day 60 waiting for the ,,G-force" movie review by the ,,Nostalgia Critic" Pretty please!
I prefer the animated Mario movie
WAIT, HE REVIEWED THIS BEFORE?!
I had this idea about Doug doing a 'Second Opinion' series where he takes movies he reviewed in the early days and re-review them as modern Critic with new thoughts and Opinions on them.
I never found it strange that Iggy and Spike turn good. After they get "evolved" and start acting/speaking more intelligently, they're shown being less sympathetic to Koopa and getting along better with Mario and Luigi. Basically their arc is they become too intelligent to be henchmen any longer. Maybe it's not the greatest arc ever, but for purposes of comedic side-characters, I thought it worked.
I thought the backstory was that they were de-evolved in the first place.. Hence why they were the Kings "Most Loyal Supporters" when they were showing Daisy to the throne room.
Koopa may have forgotten he de-evolved them intelligently.
i always thought it was funny when the one came out and said that math problem, then the other says "What are you talking about?!"...such a simple dumb joke but the reaction always got a laugh out of me
You should also check out all the deleted scenes of them from the discovered Master Tape. It really does flesh them out a lot more, and really should have been kept in.
Bob Hoskins was once asked, "What is the worst movie you've ever been in, which of your movies had the most chaotic behind-the-scenes, and if you could erase one movie from your filmography, what would it be?" His answer to all three was this movie 😂
And he was in Son of the Mask.
Say what you will about this movie but Bob Hoskins will always be a better Mario than Chris Pratt.
I think to try and prevent redundancy and get a more interesting answer, the final question should have been "if you could erase your involvement in just ONE of the good movies in your filmography, which would you choose"? I SUSPECT he'd choose Nixon, if given that specific question, but whatever he answered with that question would be interesting/telling.
@@zachtwilightwindwaker596he was?
@@ninjanibba4259 He was Odin, although he had a much smaller role in that.
Unironically, my favorite part of the entire movie was the Ba-bomb bit. It looked like the game creature, shrunk down to the size of a hand grenade. It was cute and was a fun little bit as it wandered around in the background before finally detonating. I thought it was a great bit.
And you just had to wonder why everyone was freaking out about it.
@@Chaos89PThat was amazing. Like people just hear the word 'Ba-Bomb' and the streets clear like Moses parting the Red Sea. People who, as we have seen, are armed to the teeth and more than willing to throw down at a moments notice as falling over each other to get out of the damn zipcode. It was a great way to indicate the item is incredibly powerful, but absolutely nothing else.
i always wanted one of those to wind up, not sure if they made them but it would be good merchandising
Disneycember has been something that gets me excited for December. It's always so interesting to see what gets covered every year. Thank you for contiuning to do this.
Day 60 waiting for the ,,G-force" movie review by the ,,Nostalgia Critic" Pretty please!
What a fantastic start to Disneycember 2023. Bless the late, great Bob Hoskins, for at least TRYING to give a decent performance, and not phoning it in, despite the terrible time he had on set.
Day 60 waiting for the ,,G-force" movie review by the ,,Nostalgia Critic" Pretty please!
My favorite bit of trivia about this movie is that one of the creators brought up the "Mario Mario" idea to Miyamoto and he was dying of laughter
And yet Miyamoto went and made that and the Luigi Daisy romance canon.
Miyamoto confirmed that Mario and Luigi's last name is Mario in 2015 so he thought it was creative as well.
I'll be honest, guilty pleasure. I loved this movie when I was younger and still find enjoyment in it today. Is it bad? Maybe. Is it anything like the games? No. Are there elements that are actually pretty good? I like to think so. I love the relationship between the Bros and I think John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins do do a good job despite everything and I love that Daisy is in this movie and even has a relationship with Luigi.
Guilty pleasures don’t exist just like what you like
@@VillainBoss24I mean they do. It's just something you like that most people don't. It's not a harmful concept in any way
Day 60 waiting for the ,,G-force" movie review by the ,,Nostalgia Critic" Pretty please!
@@VillainBoss24 They do. People talkign about them out themselves as the person who honest to god mostly bandwagons on hype, and "hates" this film because that is the priming they receive from social media. That's the whole reason they came up with calling it GUILT, their personal character is defined on mob rule guilt trips. Not forming opinions honestly adn fairly, like million good films dissing the original from Forrest Gump to Fight Club are allowed to breathe.
It's sort of an extension of property right, because "the fans" can't respect that Nintendo leased THEIR property out to make this film. Now they see that RIGHT undermined, because they believe fandom is COLLECTIVE property that this movie somehow stole from them. "Ruined childhood, ever heard of that? That happens when you can't have a robust adulthood and form opinions.
I'm with you! I loved it as a kid, and I still find it fun. Is it absolutely UNHINGED? Yes. But, also weird and silly in the most delightful way. Nothing about this film is serious, and the visuals are like a dream world. I'm probably gonna go watch it tonight. No guilt, just pleasure!
FUN FACT the ending credits song Almost Unreal by Roxette was actually meant for Disneys Hocus Pocus but got switched over to this movie for some reason. Personally I think the lyrics fit the Mario movie more than it does for Hocus Pocus! Adding more insanity behind this crazy but enjoyable flick!
Cool
I honestly appreciate how freaking bizarre and out there this film got, cause nobody from today or even back then was expecting Cyberpunk Mario flick .
Dangit, now I sort of want a Mario Cyberpunk game. We got Liquid Metal Mario, just need to build on that.
Fun fact: Disney bought the rights to this in the hopes of adding Nintendo Properties in their theme parks (and possibly buy Nintendo down the line) but the failure led to Nintendo denying them and 20 years later gave the rights to Universal in both theme parks and movie formats.
Really makes you wonder what could've been, doesn't it?
Which is ironic since Universal tried to sue and bankrupt Nintendo over Donkey Kong
what was the point of lying about something so specific? the company that distributed the movie to theaters happened to be owned by Disney, that's all 🫤
That's not something you start with "fun fact"... in fact you should never start a comment like that, it's annoying.
@@paedofilegamingHollywood Pictures is not a company, but rather a brand/label for Disney films with mature themes, similar to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and Hollywood's sister label, Touchstone Pictures.
We’ve come a long way between this film and Illumination’s Mario movie. Hell with The Last of Us alone, video game adaptations are finally having a mainstream moment.
Happy 100th anniversary Disney, btw.
Day 60 waiting for the ,,G-force" movie review by the ,,Nostalgia Critic" Pretty please!
the sonic movie was better
Disney is woke
I’m sorry but Mario, Sonic and mortal kombat(1995) was better
Video game adaptations are in a very cozy and successful spot right now
It’s nice to hear your genuine thoughts about movies you’ve reviewed in the past with a different perspective and mindset 14 years later from the original episode. I like videos like these where you revisit your older reviews.
My theory is that Mario’s and Luigi’s last names are Jumpman similar to Alan Rickman, Chadwick Boseman, Corey Feldman, Danny Elfman, Dustin Hoffman, Gary Oldman, Gene Hackman, Hugh Jackman, Jason Bateman, John Goodman, Morgan Freeman, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman, Paul Newman, Phil Hartman and Randy Newman because Mario was known as Jumpman in Donkey Kong.
I can't believe you didn't mention the destroyed twin towers in this movie. 8 years before 9/11 happened and it looks almost identical to the point after the second plane hit.
That scene is one of the reasons why I like to show my friends this movie. On top of all the other bad stuff in this film that catches them off guard, seeing the world trade centre half-destroyed always makes their jaws drop, because they never see it coming.
They added that to the movie...
Strange idea 💡
Are you saying that this movie did 9/11?
In Armageddon when NYC gets hit by an asteroid one of the towers gets hit and it looks identical to the real thing
@@bl3343No. The design of Koopa’s Tower just ended up being an unfortunate coincidence.

A cult movie with a fanbase.
Oh I was looking for this!
Stop this cringe shit before it gets out of hand.
@@KombatGodSeriously. It's about as dumb as this movie.
@@HisBubbliness The problem is that the directors of this film are not only inexperienced, but also really unlikeable during production.
It's fun to look back and realize where the filmmakers were trying to draw parallels to the game. Like when Mario and Koopa walk towards each other on the scaffolding in the climax, that's clearly the bridge in the first Mario game when you dunk King Koopa in the lava. And when he's in that excavator trying to hit Mario underneath, that's supposed to be the Koopa Klown Car from Super Mario World. And then you see things like "Thwomp" on buildings and signs that say 'Bullet Bills'. It doesn't make it good, but it is interesting to look back and go, "Oh, that's what you were trying to do."
This film feels like something you can watch with some good friends, unhealthy snacks and just riff on. It's fun and harmless over all, despite being a giant WTF
I remember your review on this long ago and its what made me watch you for over 15 years and this Disneycember tradition never ceases to amaze me.
Were starting off DisneyCember with The Original Mario Movie. This is off to a good start.
I expect him to talk about The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023) along with other illumination films in the month of Aprilumation
Doug review this 15 years ago? Man time flies by fast!
To quote Shigeru Miyamoto
"In the end, it was a very fun project that they put a lot of effort into. The one thing that I still have some regrets about is that the movie may have tried to get a little too close to what the Mario Bros. video games were. And in that sense, it became a movie that was about a video game, rather than being an entertaining movie in and of itself."
so apparently he thought it was to much like the games which is insane to me at least he was a good sport about it
Something tells me he didn’t actually see the movie because it’s so far from the games.
10:05 Technically Iggy isn’t “one of the kids.”
The Koopalings were never “Bowser’s children.” That was made up by a Nintendo of America localizer for the Super Mario Bros. 3 instruction manual. In Japan, the Koopalings were just unnamed bosses for the end of each world. They eventually adopted the English names in the 2000s, but the “they’re Bowser’s kids” thing was officially dropped… because that was never meant to be a thing to begin with.
People may argue about this, but the series creator Shigeru Miyamoto flat out said this wasn’t the case. “The creator is wrong, I know his creation better than him” isn’t an argument I’m willing to make.”
Hooray, Disneycember 2023 is here!
Let us toast this occasion with a celebratory GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG!
This movie has that "so bad its good" vibe, and just like Doug, I like the dystopian aesthetics of it. I actually kind of wanna see those aesthetics in a Mario game.
Nah, it was one and done for me. Lol.
The last part of Bowser’s Inside Story was rather dystopian. Certain parts of Super Paper Mario are surprisingly dark.
On the first day of DisneyCember, the critic gave to me.
A World of Dino People !
I have *ZERO* shame in the fact that I love this movie! I don’t care how different from the source material or that it isn’t a good movie I just love it. I don’t know why I just do!
Me too. It was super fun as a kid and it stretched my imagination to think of how it connected to the games.
First Disneycember video of 2023! Way to *HOP* past expectations
Hop? that's an easter movie
Nintendo mustve been like, "in 30 years, we'll make another Mario Movie, only this time, we'll do it right".
Bob Hoskins hated doing this movie but I have to admit, he gave 110% to it.
I got to meet Doug and other members of this channel at a recent convention, and we talked about a few stuff, mostly my love of his videos, but I was glad to discuss my current obsession, the Owl House, and he mentioned that he would talk about it during Disneycember, so I have been hyped for this, so you can imagine my reaction in seeing clips from the show in the intro, can't wait to see the video where he actually discusses it, thank you Doug for giving me a great Christmas present by pure coincidence
It’s thanks to this movie that Luigi and Daisy are depicted as love interests in later games
I think this movie is an example of why Autuer theory sucks. Yes movies shouldn't be made by a committee, but when you let "the creative genius" do anything they want, you get stuff like this.
Iggy and Spike's face turn didn't come from nowhere, he made them too smart. Koopa beefed up their intelligence, and they simply weren't dumb enough to support his regime anymore.
That, and there were deleted scenes that showed their character development further. Several deleted scenes were discovered by the community from a found master tape, and there were like three other scenes devoted to their character development that got cut.
The Super Mario Brothers movie was made by Hollywood Pictures a Disney owned company at the time so its' VERY WEIRD to see this on Disneycember. But thankfully we got the animated movie with Chris Pratt that is bigger and better and more faithful to the source material.
Still one of your best NC reviews from back in the day!
Thank you for continuing this great tradition every December, Doug
Fun fact Doug!
The NC review of this movie is how I found your channel, back in 2012!
i like how Hopper was even able to portray being like and of a T.rex to where he felt royal to be able to use hands and feature hands of such great use when compared to t.rex hands.
The real question is, when are we going to get the full Mario Kart movie starring Pedro Pascal?
WAIT, THIS NUKE IS UNDER DISNEY?!

I'm surprised that no one told Doug, that Mario is their in cannon videogame last names too.
The same with the Daisy and Luigi romance. Funny enough, the two also ended up hooking up for a bit.

A weird videogame movie for me
Hi Doug, it's so good to hear you talk about this movie again after so many years. Ever since I saw it on TV back in the mid 90's I remember thinking I kind of like this but I also thought it was really stupid and didn't really care for it back then. I do find myself nowadays looking back on it fondly just because of how unique and strange and silly it all is. So I wanted to let you know that the part with Iggy and Spike changing their minds and being on the Mario Bros. side isn't completely random. There's a part in the movie where Koopa uses his evolve machine to make the two of them smarter. It's been so long since I've seen this but I think the idea here is that them becoming smarter made them realize just how much they don't like Koopa and now with their new found knowledge can try to overthrow him now. But I admit it's still pretty random because we don't know these characters that well and it's not clear what convinces them to change sides all of the sudden.
Funny enough I saw this after the new Mario movie on Blu-ray and I found this movie at Barnes and nobles
On the first day of DisneyCember, Doug Walker gave to me:

I still think NC’s original comparison of Koopa to a mix of Donald Trump and Dr. Evil is still hilarious and actually pretty accurate.
This is such a guilty pleasure for me, I watched this all the time when I was a kid
About 13 years ago, I was staying over at a friend's house who was a huge Nintendo fan. He had just brought this one DVD, so we had a fun evening watching it and laughing at how stupid it was.
I remember this was the first Nostalgia Critic video I ever watched! Also I don’t really hate the Super Mario Bros movie, it’s funny in its own right!
You should do The Star Wars Holiday Special for Disneycember because it too is one of those "so bad it's good" movies, if you can look past at the fact that it was a huge let down to you as a kid, if you were a kid back in the 70's, you could really laugh at how crazy the movie is lol
Truly never expected this on a Disneycember.

Can we all just agree that this version of Yoshi is one of the most adorable things ever
Dear Mr. Walker:
I hate to break it to you but Iggy & Spike betraying Bowser (Koopa! Jesus, that is hard to keep track of) was explained. This was just after he increased their intelligence with his evolution machine. So the implication is they were only loyal to him because they were stupid; once they were smart they realize he’s a crappy leader & want to bring him down.
"you'll be deevolved into monkeys monkeys ha hahahahahahaha" it's so entertaining.
i love this film, i respect that it's something different compared to the game, and it's just so insane with all the references, you just have to have fun with it. also love Bob Hoskins
The person who played Toad was named Mojo Nixon. He was known as a musician and appeared in movies such as Great Balls of Fire! (1989) & Rock n Roll High School Forever (1990). He also did music for a First Person Shooter game called Redneck Rampage as well as voiced a boss character in the game.
As a kid, I loved it.
As an adult, yeah, it is bad but ya gotta remember we grew up with movies like this back in the 90s and grows up on ya to appreciate what ya enjoyed as a kid.
Between this and the recent Mario Bros movie, we can still love em both as not only as a kid in us, but a gamer growing up as the years grow on us.
The animated movie by Illumination is beloved by both kids and adults
Growing up with something doesn't mean it sucks any less. It was terrible then, it's worse now.
Thank you critic. I know you've gone through a lot since the start of thatguywiththeglasses. Regardless of all that. THANK YOU
I should point out that their last names being "Mario" was a thing before the movie (hell, it was even a thing in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show) and Shigeru Miyamoto did indeed confirm that their full names are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.
Also, it is implied that Iggy and Spike betrayed Koopa because he made them more intelligent to make them more competent only for them to realize "Oh yeah this guy's a dick."
It's nice seeing Doug complimenting on the movie's CG effects because, believe or not, they were actually quite revolutionary for the time and yes, some of them still hold up, and the practical effects were too, especially with the Yoshi animatronic that needed 9 people to operates, the people behind Jurassic Park's velociraptor actually studied Yoshi in order to make the raptors it was THAT impressive.
As a side note, I remember asking Doug on his Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep stream if, since this movie is technically owned by Disney, if he would like to see a world based on it in a Kingdom Hearts game and him saying yes because the movie has such cool visuals now makes me wish it actually becomes real lol
Their surname has been Mario since 1983. It’s right there in the title, “Mario Bros.” A pair of brothers with the surname Mario.
Likewise, Doug Walker and Rob Walker would be collectively referred to as the Walker Bros., not the Doug Bros. That’s how the naming scheme works in that way.
You actually suprised me, I was expecting you to tear this movie apart 😂!
Well at least we have a more faithful Mario movie to compare this to now.
On the first day of Disneycember Doug Walker gave to me. Mario and Luigi
This is legit one of my favorite movies. I don't care how bad it is. It's fantastic.
There is a fan extended cut of the movie. But it’s only on internet archive.
I hope that Disney can rebound.
And I hope people stop hating Disney just because
Me, too, bud. Me, too....
Doing Hollywood Pictures movies is like scraping the bottom of the barrel.😂😂
I always loved this movie it just has an odd charm that never goes away
One of my favourite, yet somewhat obscure Bob Hoskins roles was the nameless main character in the music video for Shiela by Jamie T. Yeah he doesn't have any lines since he's just lip synching to the song but man, it somehow just works. Not least because the director does also throw in shots where he's not lip synching so that you realise that there's more to his character than him just being some kind of Jamie T avatar.
I love this movie and not even in a guilty pleasure way. When I watch this I love the practical effects and the sound track.
It seems so long ago that I watched the original review of Super Mario Brothers on this channel. How time just flies like that.
I also love when Doug and Rob did a Real Thoughts video on this movie, the same format as the Sibling Rivalry videos. And I love going back to that video and watching Doug imitate the shitty looking animation of the dinosaurs in the opening.
“iT jUST dON’T gET nO bETTER tHAN tHIS!”😂
10:56 EXCEEEEEEEEEPT, those actually ARE their full names in the source material. It wasn't just for this movie, they really are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.
Not true at the time the game was released to the best of my knowledge. I know some games referenced this after the movie came out but Im pretty sure this was the first.
And Shigeru Miyamoto's stance on it is that Mario doesnt have a last name. He is like Madonna or Cher, it's just Mario.
The movie that started the dreaded video game curse O.O
We’re past that now

The reason Iggy and Spike betrayed Koopa was because he evolved them to make them smarter. Hearing Doug read out the synopsis proves that if this movie didn't say "based on, but instead based loosely" on a video game would've worked as a crazy dystopia like franchise.
I mean heck. You guys even did a FanScription of a Mario Bros 2 and I absolutely adored the idea.
And until you mentioned it, I didn't realize Daisy's dad was credited as Bowser.
And so it begins.
I always wanted to hear Doug's actual thoughts about this film after seeing his NC review on it years ago.
