This goes for all tailors and seamstresses. It takes a long time of combined study, practice and very hard work to gain the necessary skills to work in this trade. We are under valued and nobody wants to pay. It's many years since I've sewn anything for other people. They never appreciate the blood, sweat & tears that goes into garment construction. I just sew for myself for a long time now.
Mr. Hashimoto and Mr. Hirano are true professional tailors. I think it's much more difficult to adjust existing shoulders/sleeves and other aspects of garments, than it is to make them from scratch. I loved watching all the steps involved in careful pressing, measuring, basting, checking the fit, and repeating the process until they were happy with the results. Sleeves and shoulders can only be adjusted so much.
The job these tailors have done is part & parcel of their job. Same goes for seamstresses. Anyone who is worth their salt in this trade can do this job. I am a seamstress. Have sewn and drafted patterns for myself, family, friends & customers. I've sewn just about everything. It has always been an intense and at times difficult work which is also unfortunately a most thankless, under valued trade. People never know about the effort & hard work that goes into making garments from either scratch or making alterations.
@@johanna5688 I totally agree. People don't understand why alterations should cost more than $20, and have no idea what goes into them. Same for making a garment including pattern drafting.
@@sbaumgartner9848 Yes, definitely. To open up a garment, all that careful unpicking, then resizing is tedious and time consuming. I prefer to make up a garment myself than to alter a finished item. Customers don't want to pay more than $20 bcz they bought the item at the same price or cheap.
I agree. I am a seamstress and also make quilts and I absolutely respect and admire these gentlemen. It is not ‘easy’ to fix fitting and have it not show any alteration. Some garments are forgiving but the ones that are not, whew…it takes a ton of patience. Although, I want their “seam rippers”! I thoroughly watching this. Thank you for sharing.

The 83 year old Taylor and the 90 year old Taylor are magnificent craftsmen, I love them and have great admiration for their beautiful work. Thank you.

Having made men’s suits before I can tell you getting the shoulder smooth is by far the hardest part. The fact that they took the time to take the jacket sleeve out and shorten it for on the top is a testament to their good workmanship. Most places in the USA these days would have just adjusted the cuff itself. I hope they are training some others their techniques for the future. I also remember my grandmother having that needle threader and I wish I still had hers.
Update on needle threader: the name is "witch". Clover currently makes one called the "desk needle threader". Dritz has one called "desk needle threader".

подклад рукава закрыт ручной наживулькой, а окат рукава весь всмятку - посмотрите на примерке...у нас такую "работу" отправляли пороть и все сначала, а точнее еще на стадии повторной посадки обновленного оката рукава ждала, когда же он ее сутюжит...все осталось как есть...
Испортили пиджак вне всяких сомнений. Такая посадка рукава, как можно видеть на клиенте при примерке, вообще недопустима. Сплошные заломы и сборки по всему окату рукава. Грамотный мастер при таком незначительном укорачивании рукава (1-1,5 см.) Сделает это только по низу рукава. Вообщем, Билли и Боба ....
This process is so difficult! I work at a Tuxedo rental but when a suit is sold, sometimes the jacket’s sleeves are too long. My method has to come from the bottom of the sleeves up. If the customer wants the alteration at the armholes, they’ll have to go to someone like these gentlemen who are masters. I have replaced entire sleeves for the rental jackets and the armholes are so hard to match! I learned to replace the sleeves on my own by deconstructing a jacket but it takes me a week to put it back together. My workplace doesn’t have the pressing puffs and boards you see in this atelier. They do lovely work. I hope young people are learning this skill.
Lots of work went into this, but the sleeve at the shoulder was still puckered!!!! And, very shiny because the tailor kept ironing and ironing it and naturally it would become shiny. Looked like it was satin. Very surprised at the outcome after all that work!
I don’t think it was puckering it’s the design of the jacket itself. But you’re right he was supposed to use a cloth in between and was not supposed to iron directly like that. That’s why it’s shiny like that. My grandfather was a professional tailor, he made custom suits in Japan. He didn’t just fix clothes he designed and made men’s custom suits. My mom is a seamstress also. But this place isn’t what we consider a professional tailor. More like what they said “Reform”, to revitalize the clothes you can’t wear otherwise. Japanese in general is quite detail oriented and fussier. I would not go to this place knowing they don’t even use what we call Atenuno, a piece of cloth to iron on a suit jacket. The jacket itself isn’t a high quality or expensive one though.
This is such a wonderful and wholesome video. These gentlemen are the reason why tailors exist. Their passion, patience, attention to detail is impeccable. Just fantastic. ♥
Don't forget us seamstresses are hard working, skilful and knowledgeable too. Our job is stressful, difficult and yet, undervalued. This is why I no longer bother doing this job. It's a most thankless job ever.

Instead of taking in from the sleeve cuff, you're adjusting the armhole. Do you think you can adjust it well even though this method may make the armhole of the sleeve parts slightly shorter? I've never seen a gentleman's garment where the seam allowance is turned to the body side. Attaching sleeves requires a very high level of skill, but it's amazing to be able to reform it without a pattern. You said, "it's just a job," but it's a difficult job.

Tailors and seamstresses have a most difficult and stressful job. It is also thankless bcz nobody likes to pay what the job is worth. The customers never realise just how long someone studies/trains, practices and how much sweat goes onto garment making. It takes many years of experience to make a good tailor or seamstress. It's a trade. Not something you can learn during a summer break. It's patience, concentration, hard work and one must have an eye for detail.

It's a common technique, but it takes time and people nowadays don't even want to spend money on their clothes, let alone tailoring.

90岁的老爷子眼神真难得，还能踩衣车，满眼熟悉的传统裁缝工具马蹬子，烫斗垫白棉布，手缝针。
我上专业学校的时候就是用这个几样传统制衣工具，手缝针先扎壳确认好了然后再用衣车车线。说起来都是三十多年前的事了。满满的回忆。

Проще было убрать длину по низу рукава , либо по плечу,пройме не трогая конструктивно откат рукава.
Да, потому что идеально не получилось. При примерке верх рукава сзади сборит. И рукав на мой взгляд коротковат получился.
