Outer Wilds is one of those games that hits like an emotional freight train, and leaves a lasting imprint on anyone who's played it. 11/10 would contemplate existence again. ...If only it was possible to forget and replay the game through fresh eyes once more...
Right with you, Transistor and Outer Wilds are games I wish wish wish I could experience for the first time again. I remember puzzling and screaming and laughing with my ex-girlfriend along the entire journey and all of it was so incredibly moving and rewarding.
I played the game and after a while forgot the whole thing. I played it again recently and man... it was nice to remember everything again, it didnt feel like i was playing for the first time, but it was close. Although, after talking to Riebeck almost everything came back to me. I think im Lucky to have experienced this masterpiece again. Hopefully this happens to you guys.
14.3 billion years...the track that even without context to the game, made me bawl my eyes, laughing at the same time. Especially the actual endpiece...there's a special version that plays at the end of the game, whilst credits roll. Something so touching. By the end of this masterful game, this masterful album itself, you can only feel the love, from the developers. During a time where I DESPERATELY needed a friend, I burst into tears on command as I could feel them tell me "it's going to be okay, it's okay to let go". "Even if it takes 14.3 billion years, we'll try- try again". Marco, if you're go through a whole game OST, you should probably do this one for aure.
Overwhelming with emotion, the experience left me with tears of gratitude, the entirety of the development team, poured heart and soul, the feelings of melancholy, tension, peace, and love. A surreal, and "down to earth" experience that just happens to be "out of this world". By the end, you've experienced tragedy, time and time again, only to keep going, with perseverance in the face of an Inevitability. By the end, all I could feel was fulfillment, closure to my adversities of what was once and still should be "out of my control" and gratitude, joy, simultaneously crying and laughing as I feel a crowd of silly friends with silly instruments, patting me on the back telling me "you've got this". I truly have admiration, respect, and gratitude for every single developer for this game.
Same. Before I'd played the game someone sent me "14.3 billion years" to listen to in work, with no context. I thought, ok why not. 5 minutes later I'm at my desk tears rolling down and everyone around me thinks something terrible had happened. I tried to explain to them I was listening to the soundtrack of a video game, they all though I was nuts. 😂
I would suggest, if you play this game, the best way to share it would be to pre-record it. Those of us that have seen it before usually love to watch the discovery process because we can no longer re-experience it. However, having a chat there gives too much chance that something will be spoiled, even slightly, and of all games, this might be the game where "you can only play it the first time once" is most true. It's up to you, though!
'14.3 Billion Years' is the best track imo, if you wanna react to more, but it really hits different after playing the whole game first. Same goes for 'Echoes of the Eye', the song from the DLC with the same name.
Echoes of the Eye is probably my favorite our of all of them. That track brings sadness, joy then hope towards the end. But obviously all are great and 14.3 Billion Years is there at the top too,
Music aimed at making you 'feel something' is so often dramatic. So many are mournful, soaring and triumphant, or just plain violent. The Outer Wilds' opening theme is subtle. It's down-to-earth and rustic. Yet the moment the title screen popped up and this played, it hit me harder than tracks that tried ten times as hard. It immediately assured me that this was going to be an incredible experience. It did not lie. There is a good reason many people call this the best game they've ever played. I highly encourage you to finish it, Marco, and to not ruin it for yourself by looking anything up. Hell, even reading this comment section is too much of a risk.
The fact that you can hear a track like this and so accurately break down essentially exactly what the game is about, without knowing the full picture before hand is truly spectacular to me and really drives home just how important music is. One of the part of Outer Wilds that really makes your breakdown of this track hit home, is that when you're out there exploring the vast, lonely, emptiness of space, alone; you can use a radio tool to pick up the sound of the other explorers playing exactly this song on various instruments also alone, on different planets, ages away from you.
LET'S GOOOO!!! I'm waiting patiently for when you start the musical playthrough, because of how magical this game is. This little video is just enough of a teaser to have me excited for what's soon to come.
I love Outer Wilds, I discovered this game very recently and I'm glad that suddenly all my favorite youtubers are discovering it at the same time, this game is a masterpiece. During my game I made the mistake of sometimes looking for help in solving puzzles, I really do not recommend doing this because it reduces the satisfaction of exploring this tiny universe.
I played this game last summer and it’s genuinely moving. Especially if people love time loop games, it’s phenomenal. I was also an academic doing the intersection between religion, philosophy, and science… so you can imagine my awe that a game could capture all of that in such a perfect way. 10/10 game without question. My only regret is that I can’t time loop my own life and replay this game again for the first time.
I bounced off of Outer Wilds within an hour the first time I played it, but later gave it another attempt and it ended up becoming one of my favorite games of all time. It's one of those games that many wish they could forget and play again for the first time; it is a game about exploration and discovery, and you can only explore and discover everything for the first time once. A truly beautiful game with a truly beautiful soundtrack.
Not only is it a banjo in a video game, it's a banjo in a video game about SPACE. And while that would normally seem so out of place, this song brings you home while you're out exploring new planets. And while everything out there can seem so scary, this song just wraps you up in a hug and tells you it's okay. I love this game and this soundtrack with everything in me.
There are no words for how hard the Outer Wilds hit me when I played it. I think it was the first time in years I sobbed openly because of a piece of media. And then the DLC did it again. Music is such a key piece of that journey that even now it makes my eyes water thinking back on it when I hear certain melodies. I eagerly await more reactions to this game's music...with the caveat that I do genuinely think this is a soundtrack and a game that deserve to be enjoyed and explored together first, because the experience will never again hit as hard as the first time the music and story align. For those who know, for an example, the first time you activate the switch and 'The River' plays is an experience that I will never forget, and I hope anyone who doesn't know plays the game before listening to more of the soundtrack in a vacuum (heh), as even though it more than holds up under its own merits, the experience is far more than the sum of its parts in this case.
I hope you will someday cover Gris, both the game and the soundtrack. The game's helped me deal with grief like nothing ever has before and the soundtrack will stay in my heart forever, both for the memories of this game and the quality of the soundtrack itself.
This game is totally different from others. One of my favorites. I totally recommend everyone to give it a try, plus the music makes the game something even more special.
I remember watching a video about death and it's inevitablity, and they used this specific game to show case it. I stopped the video and bought the game just so i could experience it all. There is just something about the song that at first made me think of the excitement and curiosity of exploring this universe... And after finishing the game and reaching the end, the song has developed a new meaning... A song about the good times and the bad. A song of hope and despair. A song of giving in and never giving up. A song of a beginning and an end. A song of loss and a song of a new beginning. This simple song, that i discovered playing on a banjo first and slowly built it together with a full harmony of many instruments put together.... Its simply... Real.
The genius thing about this music is the fact that, even though it's a game where you explore outer space, the instruments used are simple and natural. It's not all synth keyboard, it doesn't sound like "outer space" music. If you didn't know about the game and just read the title and heard the music, you would think it's about exploring the wilds of nature like the mountains and wilderness. Particularly with the use of the banjo but also the harmonica, and the percussion, it sounds like something you'd hear camping out in the forest around a fire under the stars. And that's exactly what you do in the game. You explore outer space and other planets, but your home base and solace is sitting by a campfire, roasting marshmallows, in the company of a friend playing music. It's the one thing you have that makes you feel like you have a sense of home despite everything that's happening around you. It's relatable and humbling.
I missed this one by a day or two (finals week stress) but im really glad you did the main theme. Despite the fact I think so often people around video game soundtracks focus so hard on the big loud “banger” soundtracks and that they forget the little peices here and there, which honestly I think the music representing the little moments I appreciate the most. (Timber hearth being a favorite). But i really do aggree with that contemplative atmosphere this track gives off, and this game is riddled with peices that really just make you sit and reflect. The little moments are always heightened by this games music and i will never not consider this to be my favorite game of all time, easily. So happy your getting around to playing it! HYPED for the play through!
Outer Wilds is such a beautiful game. I went into it for fun space adventures and left with appreciation for life, the experiences I've had, and being comfortable with not knowing what tomorrow will bring. The tracks are short and beautiful, like life.
This song just encapsulates this profound feeling of finding one another even after another 14.3 Billion years. That we will always find one another one day.
Such an amazing game, it would be great if you reacted to the whole soundtrack because every song is amazing and has purpose and meaning. Definitely play the game it’s life changing and I’m not exaggerating in the slightest.
Around 4-5 years ago now my dog passed away at about 13 and a half years old. To some it might sound exaggerated but I had him since I was around 8 years old and I grew up extremely close to him. He passed 2 years after I moved out and it hit me pretty hard, I felt like I’d missed precious time with him that I’d never get back. Your analysis of this piece rings extremely true to me as this games soundtrack played a huge role in helping me along. It got me out of the present loss I was feeling, and evoked all the incredible memories I had with him growing up. I took a night to sit back and let the whole soundtrack play through, and it genuinely got me through that grief in such a positive way. Music is genuinely incredible in the way that it can evoke emotion and heal for so many. It’s a real blessing.
I had a moment playing this game on the interloper, i was exploring and needed to wait for the sun to come around so i could enter the core, so i figured id listen to random things and look at the stars going supernova. After a bit I started hearing music build when i aimed at the sun so i did, music started building up and after awhile faded out and left me dumbfounded as i was on a little comet on the outskirts as i accidently stumbled upon that beautiful moment.
Glad you enjoyed the piece, and you're right - it is deeply moving in context as well. I hope you continue your musical journey through this game, and I hope you find the time to play through it yourself.
oh hell he found outer wild, this is like the game that you can only play once in your life time and it make me wish that i can forget it all to experience it all over again outer wild is phenomenal it's a gift from the universe. It was the first time that a video game made me cry with the ending it's a tear of joy and sadness knowing that i can never felt the same way again, nowadays the only way i can catch a glimpse of that joy again is to watch someone play it for the first time so I would recommend you to pick up this game, do it marco do it for all of us the travelers who once walked that path
I don't know how Marco can be so passionate to music, I love how you can give me a new perspective to music tracks I've heard a lot and make me love them even more
What I love about this specific song is how the banjo sounds so quaint and simple but it's backed up by these deep and profound chord progressions that fill you with longing. Very much an analogy for the game itself.
I like this song, it gives me the feeling off; No matter the rain, the cold, or the loneliness you're experiencing right now, something good will be waiting for you, just around the corner, you just have to keep up hope. Thank you, Marco
Wow, as a Outer Wilds- and Marco enjoyer this instantly became one of my favorite Videos from this Channel. (Undertale-Undertale is my all-time favorite) hopefully "14.3 billion years" will come too. Or "timber hearth" or "travelers" or "the river" from the DLC. Oh boy, I'm excited 😆 Edit: After Marcos "14.3 billion years" Video, i guess I have a new favorite... Undertale-Undertale is going second place :)
For me this song is saying something like: This moment can't last forever but you can try to remember it for as long as possible. or It's like things that happened just now, are starting to turn into memories, right before your eyes.
You know this is a masterpiece from the fact that it hits you like a truck even if you haven't experienced the game and the full story. Speaking of that, I definitely recommend you play it, not necessarily on the channel, by yourself maybe it's the best way you could experience it, but DEFINITELY play it. Then this piece will hit like a dozen trucks instead of just one. ❤
A musical let's play for Outer Wilds would be a dream come true for me, but I completely understand if those kinds of video series will be few and far between! I love these analysis videos so much, so no pressure.
I'm absolutely battled that you got all of that from this song without even having played the game. You nailed it. Outer Wilds was an incredible experience to play, and just hearing the opening of this song gives me an intense feeling of nostalgia and just... emotion.
I would recommend playing this game. The game re-creates the feeling you are explaining over-and-over-and-over again. And the DLC does it yet again, in a completely different way. One of the best games of the past decade!
I played this last year, and just when I started the game I felt the same as you did, I spent more than 20 minutes listening to the main menu theme, definitely a beautiful theme and game too
Love your videos. You should definitively play this game. It's one of those unique gaming experiences that are hard to find nowadays. I can't listen to most of the soundtrack without tearing up a bit. Very few games gave me strong emotional feelings of awe, joy, fear and sadness as Outer Wilds.
Marco reviewing my phones ringtone, nice! I so like the Travellers Song were each instrument kicks in one at a time as heard at the final campfire. RUclips video called "Outer Wilds OST - Travelers (All Instruments Join)" = best version!
When your starship suffers a critical failure as you get sucked out through a black hole and all you can do is listen to all the magnificent musicians playing a beautiful symphony as you wait for the sun to bring you back home
oh my god, i couldn't even BEGIN to explain just what outer wilds (game) and its music has made me feel. i wouldn't have traded playing that game completely blind with my partner for any other experience. i've never put down a game feeling so human. i really hope you cover the entire game's soundtrack haha, including it's DLC! it's more than worth it, and i'll be right there crying with you :')
I recommend that you play this game more more. It's a once in a lifetime experience, and its beauty is truly unique. Don't get spoiled in it, in this game, knowing things and progressing through the game are exactly equal, and there's only like three or four things you need to know to finish the game in less than one minute
An amazing thing about the games soundtrack is that it's based on what you're doing and where you are. As your exploring tracks fade in and out, linger in the background, surge as you make a discovery, and signal the end of the loop.
this is the sound of space for me now, no more technological bleeps bloops, for in space you listen for not where you fly inside of, but where your heart resides, and its home
The amazing thing about music like this is that it really does convey exactly the emotional message the creator wanted, and to both those skilled enough to put into words and those who are just listening, it says exactly the same thing. I've seen you, Davi Vasc, Alex Moukala, and other composers and musicians react to character themes or boss music from video games you've never played, and all of you nail exactly the same points about the character just from listening to the music. You don't even know what the characters or events the music is describing are, and yet you know exactly how they feel with an amazing level of accuracy. I've said it before and I'll say it again: music is the language of emotion. PS: Please give 'Tropos by Day' from Owlboy a listen. It's beautiful and you won't regret it.
Once i booted outer wilds for the first time and heard the main theme i knew it was going to be something special, the main title theme makes me feel something that is hard to describe
So, idk the game at all but when i heard it, i was getting emotional, i was literally about to cry for some reasons and i still don't know why. Not a lot of song are capable of making me cry, but this one hit me the first time, that just proves i need to play this game and understand why it hit me that hard.
If you liked this song then you would love the entire track basically, it just has this impact on someone. My two favorites being "End of the wilds" and "the ancient glade". Its honestly pretty hard to describe. The music of this game and well, the game itself, left such a huge impact on me. basically changed the way i thought about things. without a doubt the best game i have ever experienced and i wish everyone got to experience it aswell.
I love this game to bits and can fully recommend you to play it, with the DLC. Also, if you do, do yourself a favor and play it blind. Either way, great Video.
I played thousands upon thousands of games in my lifetime. This is still by far my nr.1 game of all time. If you like the music I definitly recommand the complete Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye - OST. Song from the DLC, such as The River, are mind boggling good!
You should definitely listen to Outer wilds - Reprise if you haven't done already. Probably my favorite track from Andrew, I also really enjoy Echoes of the Eye.
Why are you becoming my favourite RUclipsr at light speed. I think it's because you share passion as we get to look back and hear our favourite sound tracks while reliving these experiences.
Something that i just love about this game is that until now, and probaly will be for a long time, the game with the greatest and best feeling of Cosmic Horror and Existencial Dread that i have ever seen. And not because it is a horror game, but because you are so free and the universe is so vast that your feelings will always be fluctuating between curiosity, ecstasy and fear.
This game makes me cry more than Undertale, and that's says SO MUCH. Outer Wilds is my single favorite game of all time. Please play it. Marco, anybody watching the video, do yourself a favor and play this game to the end, and do whatever it takes to avoid spoilers. You can only play it once. The soundtrack is incredible, and it's used better in this game than in almost any other game I know, and the emotional context of the game will give the music even more emotional impact. This is a great song! I love it! And there are songs int his game that *destroy* me emotionally, even better than this.
Outer wilds is one of the rare(ish) games that justify games being a form of art. Or a medium capable of being art. Games can of course be meaningless entertainment junk food. Many are. But so are many films, books and songs aswell. In all of those mediums most is rightfully forgotten. And in all of these mediums there are those precious gems that need to be preserved for posterity because they are special. One popular argument for games being art is the following: Listen to this brillant soundtrack, it is art. Therefore the game it is in, is art. But that falls short. If that was true, then i could make a shitty gameplay video, put mozart's 9th in as music and BAM, art. Or every meaningless movie that managed to get hold of a half decent musician. Videogames, like film and music are composed of different "base" arts. Like Musical Composition, Writing, Directing, Design, Art. What do Games have that none of the other mediums have? Interactivity. Gameplay. Making the player do something and experiece somthing firsthand. Games are Art when they derive their wonder out of their interactivity like only they can do. That's what set's them apart. The other aspects like sound, writing, graphical design serve to support this. Outer wilds is excellent in all of these supporting aspects. But the main thing is, the narrative unfolds in your head because you gain knowledge by exploration. You put two and two together. You decide where you need to go next because there might be an answer. You yourself come to a horrible conclusion. The game doesn't tell you to feel sad by playing sad music, except for the ending. It's all you. No level progression, no bars that fill up, no perks, no upgrades, no towers to climb. It's all your curiosity and you acting upon it that unveils this world, it's tragedy and that brings it to an end. And in this Outer Wilds is art. A Game(play) as art. Sondtrack is lit though too ^^ Sorry for wall of text, i just love this game. Btw: Disco Elysium is also up there. Minecraft too.
You definetelly should check out more music from Outer Wilds. And ideally even game itself. The complement each other so well. The feeling you had listening to that music, as you said you feel it during the game, and it amplifies a thousand times

Real.
:) This game gave me the pavlovian response of "Crying when I hear a banjo".
There's moving music and moving music.
And there are moving people who talk about music.
😂😂
Truly a song about treading in the familiar yet deep unknown with those who came before you. 🥲
The banjo
The harmonica
The flute
The drums
This song just encapsulates this profound feeling of finding one another even after another 14.3 Billion years. That we will always find one another one day.
And there it is again, that feeling from the first time i heard this while playing.
My favorite game ever by a long shot. Glad to see you reacting to it's music
That melody is hard to forget, ngl. Nice video as always!
I've never played the game, but this song almost always makes me cry. It feels like good memories long past on the edge of your mind.
Glad you enjoyed the piece, and you're right - it is deeply moving in context as well. I hope you continue your musical journey through this game, and I hope you find the time to play through it yourself.
i actually had my life just flash before my eyes while listening to this
its like listening to a memory of adventure, memory of a life lived
You gotta play the game. It will change you
oh hell he found outer wild, this is like the game that you can only play once in your life time and it make me wish that i can forget it all to experience it all over again
outer wild is phenomenal it's a gift from the universe. It was the first time that a video game made me cry with the ending it's a tear of joy and sadness knowing that i can never felt the same way again, nowadays the only way i can catch a glimpse of that joy again is to watch someone play it for the first time
so I would recommend you to pick up this game, do it marco do it for all of us the travelers who once walked that path
Did you ever play Outer Wilds?
@@uthergoodman401 No I haven't, to be honest with you, I had forgotten about it.
@@vallanceress If you loved its music, you have to play the game. Just go for it. You wont regret it
@@uthergoodman401 Thanks, I will have to look into it!
Oh boy, I'm excited 😆
Edit: After Marcos "14.3 billion years" Video, i guess I have a new favorite... Undertale-Undertale is going second place :)
Its a beautiful song on its own, emotionally overwhelming everytime after playing the game. Almost always on the verge of crying when i hear it.
Outer Wild's fills an empty hole in me! Helped me get through some of my depression.
This music is just... Nostalgia, the music. Even if you haven't played the game. It just makes you think back on good times.
For me this song is saying something like:
This moment can't last forever but you can try to remember it for as long as possible.
or
It's like things that happened just now, are starting to turn into memories, right before your eyes.
I feel like crying everytime I hear Outer Wilds music, it just tucks at my heart strings.
the only way to make a banjo sound good:
give it to andrew prahlow
You know this is a masterpiece from the fact that it hits you like a truck even if you haven't experienced the game and the full story. Speaking of that, I definitely recommend you play it, not necessarily on the channel, by yourself maybe it's the best way you could experience it, but DEFINITELY play it.
Then this piece will hit like a dozen trucks instead of just one. ❤
I genuinly need to stop and take some deep breaths to prepare my heart everytime i hear that main Riff
A musical let's play for Outer Wilds would be a dream come true for me, but I completely understand if those kinds of video series will be few and far between! I love these analysis videos so much, so no pressure.
we loved watching you live on twitch vertias channel. you were so emotional and raw we felt that!
Oh? Someone watched me live?
@@MarcoMeatball veritas
Wow you really nailed the analysis
I literally played this game for the first time the same week you released this video. Couldn't be more perfect timing wise for me :3
I love Outer Wilds so much . the story about a same dream beyond language, time and space . and that theme is everyone's sustenance .
I'm absolutely battled that you got all of that from this song without even having played the game. You nailed it. Outer Wilds was an incredible experience to play, and just hearing the opening of this song gives me an intense feeling of nostalgia and just... emotion.
This game and his music are just supernatural. It's the only word I can describe them with.
F**k man, this made me start to well up immediately
I just remembered This song really reminds me of Thomas was Alone!
I would recommend playing this game. The game re-creates the feeling you are explaining over-and-over-and-over again. And the DLC does it yet again, in a completely different way.
One of the best games of the past decade!
Marco, you should make a playthrough of this game. Is beautiful and unique.
One of the best games ever with one of the best video game soundtracks, too.
The game had in in all kinds of emotions at the end and through the game.
But the end, man… FEELS.
I played this last year, and just when I started the game I felt the same as you did, I spent more than 20 minutes listening to the main menu theme, definitely a beautiful theme and game too
You need to play this - and record this!
Love your videos. You should definitively play this game. It's one of those unique gaming experiences that are hard to find nowadays. I can't listen to most of the soundtrack without tearing up a bit. Very few games gave me strong emotional feelings of awe, joy, fear and sadness as Outer Wilds.
I love this game and it's soundtrack so much! It is really something special.
Marco, please, play the entire game. The final song will hit you harder than you could ever imagine
After dmc5
My personal favorite is timber hearth. I absolutely loveeee the soundtrack of outerwilds. It’s unmatched.
One word: YES!
Finally Outer Wilds, you should play this game (or play it more since you said you've played the opening)
Thank you so much man
No problem
An amazing thing about the games soundtrack is that it's based on what you're doing and where you are. As your exploring tracks fade in and out, linger in the background, surge as you make a discovery, and signal the end of the loop.
Just ... Thank you 🤗
Another amazing piece of music followed by wise Opera Uncle speech. Are you alright, Marco, is everything okay?
Im fine just tired 😂
this is the sound of space for me now, no more technological bleeps bloops, for in space you listen for not where you fly inside of, but where your heart resides, and its home
Ah, my favorite game.
I did a simple cover of this for my channel, but nothing compares to the beauty, wonder and hope of the original! Thank you.!
I hope you react to more of this soundtrack!
Ive seen some streamers break out in tears at the end of the outer wilds, this simple banjo contributing to it.
WHAT HOW DID I MISS THIS AGH
Sorry im just so excited your finally experiencing this game and its music!
I recommend "we have liftoff" it was used for the launch trailer, it's 1:13 long, but it feels like 14.3 billion years
If you liked this song then you would love the entire track basically, it just has this impact on someone. My two favorites being "End of the wilds" and "the ancient glade". Its honestly pretty hard to describe. The music of this game and well, the game itself, left such a huge impact on me. basically changed the way i thought about things. without a doubt the best game i have ever experienced and i wish everyone got to experience it aswell.
we cant get enough of outer wilds, its just so good
I love this game to bits and can fully recommend you to play it, with the DLC.
First time I've seen marco look melancholy or somewhat depressed.
This game is wonderful!
You should definitely listen to Outer wilds - Reprise if you haven't done already. Probably my favorite track from Andrew, I also really enjoy Echoes of the Eye.
Oh my god outer wilds. Wow just wow 💜.
The river from outer wilds echoes of the eye is such a dynamic and a perfect song for you to review
Why are you becoming my favourite RUclipsr at light speed.
I think it's because you share passion as we get to look back and hear our favourite sound tracks while reliving these experiences.
terrible fate is one of the best lol
Something that i just love about this game is that until now, and probaly will be for a long time, the game with the greatest and best feeling of Cosmic Horror and Existencial Dread that i have ever seen. And not because it is a horror game, but because you are so free and the universe is so vast that your feelings will always be fluctuating between curiosity, ecstasy and fear.
And its on my top #5 games.
I have never played the game but the camp fire song is amazing 👏
Everytime I hear this song, I think Neebsgaming. Very... Opposite to how this song feels, but still heartwarming.
