  • In this episode, I share my new surfboard "Daydream Egg Twin" hand shaped by Somma Special Designs | Shea Somma.
This twin fin egg combines many of the properties that he applied to the Daydream Hull and pastes them onto this new sled! The outline is very similar to that of the DD Hull, with the wide point slightly in front of center. However, instead of squaring out the tail, he rounded into a nice somewhat wider rounded pin. The rails are quite reminiscent of the DD Hull, pretty full and boxy, with a thinner foil at the nose and tail. The bottom contour could not be more different, though! The entry is flat until it transitions to a single concave, then a deep double concave that mellows out through the tail, where a hard tucked edge resides. Rocker is very minimal, this twin is virtually flat, with only the slightest amount of flip in the nose. Much like Shea's collaborative Daydream Hull, this board is meant to be forgiving yet rippable is all sorts of conditions, from perfect points to junky chunky beachies!

What tide do you like for Rockaway? I find it can get so walled up and critical there and I struggle with the drops. Do you try to target high tide so it isnt too hollow? Your footage makes these waves look mushy and forgiving! Maybe you make it look easy :) cheers

Hey dude! It depends on the swell.. What I noticed is that on long period swells 11s > it works better mid to high tide and short period swells work good low to high tide.. usually most tides but as you get close to mid tide the waves get less steeper. Some swells make closeouts no matter where you surf in Rockaway.. there is just too much power and the sandbars can't handle it. It's very tricky and there is no simple solution. You have to just figure out the technique to make steeper drops, may be have a board with more rocker and length for earlier entrance.

No, I'm Kalmyk. My ancestors were western mongolians (Oirats). I buy them less. May be 3-4 boards per year. I usually do one in/one out.

They look kinda slow, like they need a little more push.

Thanks for watching. I totally agree.. once it has slightly steeper face, the egg goes great! We are getting another round of waves this weekend. Fingers crossed! I also got a new set of fins! Cheers!

Where did you paddle out for this video ?

Beach 69th, Rockaway Beach:) Unfortunately, it's not a secret spot. When there is a short period swell, most spot work great. The next jetty worked good too and actually less crowded. I usually always hunt rights when I can.

Hey! No, I'm Kalmyk. My ancestors were Oirats from Western Mongolia. I have started buying less boards as I really nailed down my quiver and it came down to 3 boards now. The only board I'm missing is a longboard. If I get one, it will be really hard to get out of my building LOL.
