In the anime "Record of Ragnarok," the Valkyries play a crucial role in selecting and preparing warriors for the ultimate battle between the gods and humanity. Each Valkyrie has a unique name and backstory, adding to the meaning and depth of the series.
The name "Valkyrie" itself means "chooser of the slain" in Old Norse, and it is fitting for these mythical beings who are responsible for selecting the bravest and most skilled warriors to fight for the gods in the final battle of Ragnarok. It was revealed 9 out of 13 Valkyries so far. So, it's not a complete list yet, but still, it is nice to know this. Brunhildr, the leader of the Valkyries in the series, has a name that translates to "armor battle." which means defending, just like she defended humanity. Goll, whose name means "loud," "confused noise," and "battle." I'm not sure about the meaning of this, maybe it has something to do with a battle cry.
Randgriz, the "shield destroyer," became a skypiercer, which is a halberd type, and helped Lü Bu in the second battle. It does make sense, since the beak of a halberd could potentially pierce plate armor. But sadly, she died with Lü Bu.
Reginleif, which translates to "daughter of the gods," and she was paired with Adam, the first human. In the Bible, Luke chapter 3, Adam and Jesus are called the decendants or the sons of God. They both engaged in a battle against Zeus, who was considered the father of all gods and humans according to Greek mythology. It seems that the author of "Record of Ragnarok" is referencing the idea of a family feud by including characters from different mythologies and religions in the same story.
Hrist, whose name means "shaker," may symbolize the quaking and upheaval that will come with Ragnarok. She helped Kojiro win the battle against Poseidon by becoming his sword. This is the first human victory, disrupting God's winning streak. It did shake the entire gods' mentality , knowing humans could potentially win the battle. This victory marked a significant turning point in the series and set the stage for even more intense battles to come.
Hlökk, on the other hand, means "commotion" or "uproar," perhaps referencing the chaos and destruction of the impending battle. She was unwillingly paired with Jack the Ripper and caused a little commotion after they won the battle.
Alvitr, which means "all-wise," or "strange creature," is a fitting name for a Valkyrie tasked with selecting the best warriors to fight for the gods.
