Habitat 3D Printed House But You Can't Tell From Inside!

  • Alquist 3D used their COBOD printer to extrude the concrete walls of this home then Habitat finished it to be indistinguishable from a traditionally built home. We have been following this project in Williamsburg Virginia, we visited when it was an empty lot, we saw it's first layers being printed, and we saw the progress immediately after the print, right after the sheetrock, and finally again now in the finished form. This 3D printed house is an affordable housing unit provided by habitat for humanity.

Honestly I probably won’t bother the new homeowner unless they reach out to me. I’m sure they are thrilled to have a new home but they deserve privacy in their home. There are many other 3D printed houses owned by corporations that we can get equally valid data from.

    Merry Christmas ! (belated)
This is a wonderful Christmas gift to the lucky person(s).
However, events like this should happen every day throughout the USA.
Many people are in need of shelter, this industry should take off. Many people want to buy
3D concrete printed houses but there are not available.
Every community should offer affordable houses to the community people in need, they should operate the printers themselves and have people trained by COBOD/Alquist.
    Wonderful job, Jarret !

The only construction hard cost 3D printing alters is the lumber and framing costs associated with building a house. All the site work, foundation, mechanical, electrical, gas plumbing, envelope costs (doors windows, siding roofing) remain the same. 3d printing is certainly an exciting technology, but the cost savings at the moment relative to stick framed structures seem inconsequential.
Secondly, the 3d printed housing construction process works great, with a lot with no access limitations, in a fairly remote setting, but so would any construction process. I’ve yet to see a 3d printed home built on any kind of slope, or with any challenging water proofing conditions, or other significant site constraints. I can’t imagine moving one of these machines down alleys and trafficked streets in San francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles.

Can one print their own home and can home purchase a personal 3d home printer or do you need a permit or lisense? For all the supplies necessary for such printer is more than the printer itself when purchased all together if not is it significantly cheaper? How do you apply a shower toilet and sink or oven, tv etc etc things that require water and electricity and will a 3 d printer home with stand all weather elements or natural disasters? Sorry so many questions but you sound like you know what you’re talking about so I wanted run a few questions by you.

    • @alexanderbarsher3072
      @alexanderbarsher3072 2 года назад +3

@@caligurl8770 Hi Brittany, good questions. I’m not in the 3D printing business so I can’t answer your questions specifically. These questions would be better directed towards a 3D printing company like ICON and ALQUIST.
What I can say is any home or associated development needs a building permit from the applicable local authority, whether that be city or county. Any building methods, 3D printing included, must comply with that authority’s building, land use, and structural codes.
3d printing has large upfront and material costs. The specific numbers I’m unfamiliar with, but I can guarantee that they are high enough to render any one off residential home economically unfeasible. Only a company operating at scale, like the one this channel features, has the ability to utilize and license this technology.
Many 3d printed structures actually have lumber framed walls on the interior of the printed walls to provide cavities for electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and any other utility systems the design might call for. This adds further redundancy to this building method, and adds credence to the claim of 3D printing’s current lack of cost savings relative to traditional North American building methods. It’s inefficiencies like this that, in my opinion will prevent this technology, in its current iteration, from being adopted at scale and change the affordable housing conversation. But to answer your questions, this is how they rough in the utility systems for these houses.
      Hope this answers your questions.

    • @automateconstruction

No in Williamsburg Virginia that isn’t a concern to my knowledge so it wasn’t tested for tornados. It’s totally custom so a different region would have different engineering requirements. That’s part of why its hard to scale nationally in the construction industry.

It's a fantastic result: congratulations to all members of the team. It will be interesting to see how the walls fare in the years to come. As a layman, it looks to me the physics of long slender concrete walls without either internal reinforcement or vertical supports are relying on the roof to hold them in place for the long term; otherwise what's to hold them being easily pushed over by a moderate force impact (e.g. falling tree, backed into by a bad driver). Was it a specialised (read, higher cost) concrete that was used, I wonder, with additional strength properties?

Most of the US cities with a population of over 1 million or close to it are showing that there are limitations to how many people can live in a city over all and get around in a timely manner. Unless you want Tokyo level engineering in every city, the US will never be ready for the 21st century the way it was designed. We have thousands of acres that are not being used that can be sustainable keep and designed for this century, it's just simply understanding of why most codes or laws that were made last century do not and will not work in this century.

3D printed concrete is actually much stronger than regular concrete because of the high cement concentration. This also makes it expensive.

This literally take maybe a day or two depending on how big. What weather you're in I mean yeah there's some factors. But a couple of days maybe big places maybe a week. It's very boring watching them go down layer-by-layer. Trust me you don't want to see.

Timeline I'm talking about is based on the man that about 3 years ago who is trying to do housing for lower-income people in other countries he believed that you could create housing for $4,000 they weren't big houses. Not exactly the tiny house movement but they weren't big.
      Thanks for the videos.

It's sad that Habit for Humanity is promoting the 3D printed home scam. Concrete is one of the worst environmentally unfriendly products out there even before you factor in the issues you'll face with 3D printing.
If you have to pair your breakthrough construction idea with a charity model it means it's doesn't stand on its own merits. 3D printing homes preys on caring people who want to help out and are dazzled by the gimmick of 3D printing. Whether it's homes for the homeless or the absurd idea of building in Africa where labor will be cheaper than hauling the machine please don't invest in these scams.

The machine isn’t married to the material. Innovation takes many iterations and from what I’ve seen this industry is on a good path. There are many good people focused on developing sustainable materials which could be implemented with these machines over night.

This is the first step; it’ll get better and prettier! I actually do not mind a house made of concrete vs houses made of wood and engineered wood! Look at all those other countries that builds houses put of concrete, they last forever.
