  • Step into the extraordinary and mysterious world of Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author Susanna Clarke as she discusses her spectacular novel, Piranesi, with the one and only Neil Gaiman live and online exclusively for 5x15.
Susanna Clarke’s readers are no strangers to strangeness. Her multi-million copy bestselling novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Bloomsbury), recasts Georgian England as a fantastical land of raven kings, ruthless faeries and reluctant sorcerers where magic lurks around every corner. Neil Gaiman called it “unquestionably the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last seventy years.”
In her latest novel, the acclaimed Piranesi, Clarke weaves her richly abundant magic to plunge her readers into a new and mystifying tale. Enter the world of Piranesi, the lone inhabitant of the House. Day after day, he makes a careful record of the wonders of his strange dwelling place: its labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides which thunder up staircases, the clouds which move in slow procession through the upper halls until one day when his solitary existence is interrupted. Messages begin to appear, scratched out in chalk on the pavements. There is someone new in the House. But who are they and what do they want? Lost texts must be found; secrets must be uncovered.
Neil Gaiman is the author of numerous New York Times bestsellers, including Neverwhere, American Gods, The Ocean at the End of the Lane and the Sandman series of graphic novels. He is credited with being one of the creators of modern comics, as well as an author whose work crosses genres and reaches audiences of all ages. He is a prolific creator of works of prose, poetry, film, journalism, comics, song lyrics, and drama.
Susanna Clarke's debut novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell was published in 2005 in more than 34 countries and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award and the Guardian First Book Award. It won the British Book Awards Newcomer of the Year, the Hugo Award and the World Fantasy Award. Piranesi is New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, named again and again as a Book of the Year in 2020. It has been shortlisted for 13 awards including the Costa Novel, the Encore and Hugo Awards, and the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2021.

I just finished Piranesi. I was so blown away by it. When you think a human being has created books like Johnathon strange and Piranesi, it makes you believe in real magic. Thank you Susanna.

The line that Susanna said that she wrote in her twenties is "Spray as high as the Ceiling exploded through all the Northern Doors. The Spray caught the Sun; it was as if someone had suddenly thrown a hundred barrelfuls of diamonds into the Hall." During my first read of Piranesi, the beauty of this line really stood out to me. It's incredible to hear the history behind it!

As someone who also suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, it's so good to know Susanna is doing better and is still writing.

I love the story, The Ladies of Grace Adieu. It's amazing, just like Neil Gaiman says.

I wrote the Epilogue first; it was brief but defined the main genre, and I liked it. Once the main story was finished I wrote the Prologue, and it gave the story and whole new slant.

Neil acting surprised that he "predicted the future" that Strange and Norrel would be popular. Mr Gaiman, I only read that book because you were gushing about it and I'm sure many people heard of it directly through your efforts. So as always - we write our own futures. (Ms Clarke of course wrote her own future as well. Meeting all the people in her prescient photo was not a Total fluke of fate either, as she was actively reaching out into that world.)

I remain convinced that Piranesi is a loose sequel to The Magician's Nephew, and that Valentine Ketterley is the grandson of Andrew Ketterley. Running magical experiments on people by imprisoning them in other worlds seems to run in the family.
