  • QUASIMODO
Not going out. Bad things come when I leave. Always bad!
    LONI
Nonsense. That's not my boy talking.
    QUASIMODO
What do you know of me?
What do you know of all the things I feel?
    You're only made of stone
    Who is that you see
Instead of seeing what I am for real -
    This twisted flesh and bone?
    ANTOINE
    But Quasimodo, inside you is...
    QUASIMODO
    You're a liar!
With ev'ry new excuse you try out
You only make me want to cry out
    "Would that I were
    Made of stone like you..."
    CHARLES
    Quasimodo, it's obvious you...
    QUASIMODO
You act so smart, it smarts
So why has not a single word you've said
    Been any help at all?
    LONI
    Quasimodo!
    QUASIMODO
And you, the Queen of Hearts
The more your hopes and fancies fill my head
    The farther that I fall
    Shut my brain down!
If I were senseless, I'd prefer it
    Another gargoyle on this turret
    Spitting rain down
    To the stones below
    Oh...
    I've wasted my faith
    Believing in saints of plaster
    But the only one worth
    Believing in was my master
He's the one who never lied
He told me it was cruel outside
He told me how I had to hide
His words were cold as stone
    But they were true
    Not like you...
Take all the dreams you've sown
    Take all your lies
    And leave me alone!
    ANTOINE
    All right, Quasimodo
    We'll leave you alone
    CHARLES
    All right, Quasimodo
    We'll trouble you no longer
    LONI
    You're right, Quasimodo
    We're only made of stone
    GARGOYLES
We just thought that you were
    Made of something stronger...
    QUASIMODO
And now I'm on my own
Never again to wonder what's out there
    Let it remain unknown
    And my one human eye
    Will evermore be dry
    Until the day I die
    As if I
    Were made of stone!

    WOW
    THAT ENDING
Yes, it's a big note but that's not what I'm talking about
I'm talking about the crescendo. The soft to loud. The gentle to HARSH. That ending...I would listen to this song a million times over regardless of what I thought of the rest if it meant I got to hear that ending just once.

Drew Sarich was one of the few who could do these notes well, which is why the US version is so < compared to this one

It's interesting how the end of this is done compared to the English version. The way it continues to go up again after the high note (what would be the 'made of' part after the 'I' in the English version) and then the soft 'stein' at the end. Both versions sound great, of course, but it's funny how songs are performed different ways. Also, the aggressiveness of the last words followed soft final word gives a hauntingly beautiful effect in this.
Okay, rant over. (Feel free to add on, I love over analyzing everything)

Quasimodo sounds more "cold angry" to me in the English version throughout the song. The part where in the english version says "we just thought that you were made of something stronger" also sounded stronger in the english version. I like it better.

Drew Sarich is/was easily one of the best male voices in musical theater in the late 90's - early 2000's. His voice has a huge range and a rock edge that makes the ending of this song heartbreaking. Most guys don't sing the original ending because it's so difficult since it was written for Drew. For me, this is the definitive version. There used to be a full version of the German Hunchback production on YT. If you can find it, I highly recommend it, as it was a fully staged version of the show and not the sort of single-set production that ended up being performed in the U.S. Drew's performance of Made of Stone is even better in that video, if you can find it. Unfortunately, Drew did much of his work in European shows even though he's American. I believe his only Broadway shows were the flop, Dance of the Vampires, and a stint as Valjean in the second revival of Les Miz.

lcowles Actually, he played Von Krolock in Tanz Der Vampire(the Original European version of Dance of the Vampires, which played on Broadway with Michael Crawford as Von Krolock and flopped with all the changes made to the script). He also did star in another American vampire musical, Lestat, that also flopped. He had a few others English performances, I’m sure:

Bonus: here’s his English performance of Out There!

This version definitely has much more that I wish was transferred to the English version. The stereo effect on the cast recording is an awesome touch, the orchestra has much more color. But I'd be a joke if I weren't to mention the High C ending. Sure, the G sounds a bit more like common Broadway endings, but the English version of Hunchback didn't even make it to Broadway. It was blocked from Broadway in favor of *shivers* Frozen: The Musical.

While Hunchback may be a better show, Disney had to look at it from a financial standpoint. And Frozen, without a doubt, made more money than Hunchback would’ve

Let's be fair here- Frozen is a very fun musical. Like, yes, this is better, but it isn't flawless either, and it isn't the fault of anyone involved in Frozen that it got picked instead.

This whole musical just sounds so much better in German. The original 1999 Berlin version that was not allowed to be produced in America has always been my favorite version, and I still say it’s the best one. Yeah, the newer one that has been recorded in English is more faithful to Victor Hugo‘s book, but the original German 1999 Berlin version is really one of my favorite stage musicals of all time. I hope to God it gets performed again someday, because there are a few songs they cut and replaced that I miss. This song, however, is still the best part of the whole show!
