To be fair, Genshin was never accused of asset theft. People were just mad when it was shown because it looked like Breath of the Wild - which then mostly dissipated as it came out. Tower of Fantasy had blatant asset robbery accusations.

Zack, just to make this point clear, Tower of Fantasy was not review bombed and called "Tower of Theft" because the game looks similar to Genshin. The developers actually ripped assets from other games like Honkai and used them in the game and trailers. This includes weapons and items, animations, 2D sprites and some world models. Other stuff is also heavily inspired by Honkai and Genshin, but that's less egregious than the outright asset theft.

Love how Asmongold has more nuance arguments for Genshin even though he has never touch it.
27:48 "It has things that keep people engaged in the game. I don't really care what somebody calls content or what somebody doesn't call content". Genshin does lack endgame contents but I have played, grinded enough MMO before, if Genshin's endgame gonna take form of repeating a dungeon hundred times for a piece of gear then I'll pass. The game is still churning out events, characters, quests, exploration and that's keeping me engaged. I'll have my daily GI gameplay, do something in ff14 then call it a day.

You actually can refund microtransactions in basically any game through your bank. However, this typically results in your account being banned for violating their chargeback terms. If you're lucky the devs just won't care or notice it, or they'll remove the items you gained from the purchase you refunded.
EDIT: Since some of you are probably still on a family account with your foster parents and lack actual banking experience, here's a legitimate and legal reason for chargebacks (sourced directly from the Chase Bank website):
    - A product or service you received and are dissatisfied with
Yes, you can chargeback literally anything (within reason) by simply claiming you're dissatisfied with it. Obviously it shouldn't abused (banks aren't dumb and monitor your account more than you do), but you can 100% legally chargeback MTX. Game companies can't sue for the product back, because they never lost it (the product exists exclusively on their private servers, and it costs nothing to sell). They could potentially sue for the $1-2 chargeback fee (assuming there even was one), but it'd cost thousands to pursue that legally, hence why they don't do it and simply just ban your account.
Important to note that most if not all games that have MTX have a refund feature of some sort (usually hidden outside the game client on their website), and generally this should be tried first. Only chargeback if they refuse the refund.

I think there is a notable similarity in how, like you said, in the west, every new mmo has to withstand the comparison to WoW, while games like ToF have to suffer the comparison to Genshin instead, and how neither are particularly easy battles to "win" with how established those two games are at this point.
But there is one important difference between those two comparisons; and thats the fact that WoW is nearly 20 years old, so a lot of newer mmos can make use of the massive array of technical and graphical developments that have been made since its release to give themselves an edge against what is still a colossal opponent.
Genshin, on the other hand, is barely a few years old, so its challengers dont have that luxury, theyre just facing an uphill battle.

Right now the game is still fresh so you got things to do (as it was in the first weeks of Genshin) but then you reach endgame and you have 2 choices in your day on ToF: use vitality to farm gear (resin) or do a shitty p2w pvp lagfest. So yeah you win a p2w pvp and lose on the story, quality and worldbuilding. Also why do people think there is a timegated max levelcap in the game? It's because they want you to still play to reach endgame while Sumeru drops.

The worst about genshin is the fact even after the endless artifact farm (which is basically the only thing left to do late game other than maybe build new characters) is that you literally have nowhere to use your strong characters on other than a 1 time every couple weeks on the abyss, thats it.

Also the idea of mmo raids and stuff with bosses where you need to have comps to win is way more repeatable content then whatever genshin has, of course assuming the game difficulty scales up as idk how late game difficulty is going to be (if you can just destroy everything solo then that would be kinda boring), once again my biggest complaint about genshin is that you spend the entire game building your characters and then at the end when they're super powerful you have nowhere to actually use them, and mind you i use mostly c0 5 stars with either 4 star or 5 star R1 weapons, so its not like im a mega whale that has everything c6r5 and now is complaining that everything is too easy (in fact exactly due to that problem i see going for a maxed character like that a complete waste of time and money).

Oh trust me... It's somewhat similar to Anthem's elemental combos but at least Anthem let you carry 2 non-useless sub-skills and movement differences/style were discernable. The enemy lineup and AI is mostly to blame too. Decently fun combat content is still just the regular enemies with boosted damage and HP pools.
I agree Genshin has much better "form" but it really lacks in (and distracts from the) "function". It oddly feels like a less-coomer, more family-friendly version of: "Only here because giant anime titties" (even though I love such content very much lol) and those who don't buy into that say the old classic, "Not paying & praising just because of that. The rest are just more damage and they're done, and they're not even balanced, with pyro reactions scaling off character stats, and electro doing its own thing.
GI couldn't even be bothered to make every charged attack unique or give them a dash attack. It's like they gave Jean hers which was perfect for an anemo that can throw people around, then decided that was enough.
Finally, I can say with certainty they had no idea how to make an engaging combat system. The list of problems is exhaustive, but I'll just say one example is they introduced corrosion because they realized they fucked up the way shields work.

Didn't play Genshin, so my take on ToF is i actually enjoyed it more than i thought, maybe due to its MMO aspect. This works well as a replacement from PSO: NGS from its anime style, combat, meeting people on the field, and exploration on open world. Maybe NGS got some of more unique weapon and fast combat, and overall better customization and looks. But can't stand those 100gb space, especially on my 500gb ssd laptop lol.
But yeah, the combat on ToF is pretty fun once you know that they have dodge attack combo, incorporate it with their aerial attacks and hold button attacks, there's quite a lot that you can do, so definitely not just spamming LMB.
And the ability to stick to your own character is also a nice point, since imo while the 3d model of ToF looks better than Genshin proportion wise, the character design itself is less...memorable. While most of them looks cool, it feels like a "bland" coolness. It feels like the established characters are presets made by people while they are thinking "let's make a cool looking character". So of course they looks good, but it stops there. Some of them not even really fit the sci-fi theme. The best looking and most unique one that also fits the theme i think is Shiro (the chakram cat girl). Unique hairstyle, good colors, good combination of base suit and outerwear, fit the sci-fi theme a lot.
So due to this issue that i personally have, i'm glad that i can stick with my own presets. I'm not saying that i can design character better than them, and i also not saying that my presets are better than every single one of them. But since i feel most of them feels like presets anyway, it'd be better for me to just use my own.

I've been living in China for 7 years. Even though they make a ton of mobile games, almost all of them are monetized really fairly. There is "lootbox" legislation; for instance in hearthstone you just buy dust directly instead of buying card packs. They honestly make some pretty damn good games even with limited resources and subject to censorship. Even if they want to export a game overseas, it still has to pass some censors, who are nearly all 70 year old out of touch hyper-conservative boomers. They got around this with Honor of Kings by outsourcing some of the team to foreigners when they realeased Arena of Valor as it's counterpart in 2017. They just now finally managed to get Honor of Kings in its full form into open beta in a few developing countries (Mexico, Turkey, Brazil). It's a really good game with non-predatory non-p2w monetization. If they can lift the laws about censorship of exported games, there could be some great games coming out of China eventually. But things are going toward China being more and more like North Korea and less and less free since Papa bear eliminated term limits and implied he was gonna be big papa for life.

The thing to remember about China and its most popular stuff is, usually a running thing or a long series, an example for games: Gujian 3 is the only one available to steam with limited translation, Sword fairy 7 is the same and is limited with English translation for even text, the systems they use may be different in looks or some may have certain elements added in that are not regularly used but are not uncommon. In fact one of the longest running Manhua is on it's 5-7 series (Each follow a different protagonist in the same universe usually thousands of years later) and has a very distinct are style, and it's translation to English is so slow that they leave it behind to work on the next one before even completing a series, basically spoiling everything and killing momentum. To admit, one series was rather unique, but outside that, the Wu Shu genre is so stagnant and repetitive there is a good chance you can predict an entire series once you read enough of them, and the good ones eventually drop off due to having to keep it going, thus worse carbon copies with the same tropes and power levels and names sprout up. It is a constant problem and it very quickly becomes a cycle of repeat and reuse. Korea is having this issue with is Manhwa industry, the series Solo Leveling was so popular and well received that is birthed dozens of others using the same powers, art style, hair cuts, a copy paste of the Main Character in terms of looks or skills, the same father is dead, mom is sick, sister is pretty and in debt with medical bills. The Full dive VRMMO genre is having the same problem in Korea, basically making worse versions of the same one that got popular. An earlier for of this would be the Black Butler craze, after it was published and got an anime, in which lots of suggestive BL (Boy Love) was in it, with a dark theme, an explosion of them came out betting more intense with their BL, even creating a genre for it. The author for Black Butler admitted she wanted to make a BL manga but didn't think it would sell well, considering the demographic for manga/anime, but she did pave the way for it. Which the BL genre fell into it's own pit of "it's practically softcore hentai with the junk blurred out," and it lost popularity for a while. Which points to a problem of people cashing in on a popular idea and people buying into it but in reality they had no idea what to do, much like the isekai genre, nothing but trash and pale imitations until you wanna gouge your eyes out. Unlike something like Berserk which no one could replicate.

Actually, remember the time when Warner Bros attempted to copyright a gaming MMO mechanic that irked so many developers?
That is becase Gaming is built upon the concept of building off of older, existing mechanics, and improving from there.
What is copyrightable, however, are the assets, characters, etc., as they are the 'art form' of gaming, the 'vehicle' to present the mechanics to the public.
So in essence, Genshin is inspired from BOTW, which takes inspiration to older RPG games, which also got inspiration from the Tabletop D&D games.

In fact, we are seeing the evolution even till now.
Heck, whether you like it or note, the Gacha mechanic itself follows this philosophy.

I have to disagree of when u said "if this wasn't a gacha, it would be a better game" cuz let's be honest, most of these games wouldn't even exist if they weren't gacha, cuz gacha is and was already a sub-category of games, it every gacha game took the gacha out of it it would be mostly an overwhelming amount of either RPG games or idle games/turn based games, I think the market would be over saturated, I think the gacha system kinda keeps players limited in a sense that they focus more on one or two games of that type, not to mention these companies have to make money, Genshin for example wouldn't be able to grow not even 10% of what it has if all the money came from cosmetics or something, which they barely have right now, it just doesn't work in the context of that game and many others, and I'll just bring up the good old argument that you can clear the good gacha games without paying a cent while also being quite powerful if u just play it regularly, u might never be at the level of a whale but like in Genshin's case it's not like u have to fight or compete against the whales, just focus on your own fun with what you have, it does feel better and more fulfilling when u get a character after saving for so long, or even the hyped waiting time for a rerun of a character that you've been wanting for so long, that's what creates so much media content and hype around genshin impact. Spending money just makes the game easier or more comfortable at times, it was never obligatory, only those that have money to spend on games spend it on them so it's no big deal.

The point is that no game is going to compete with the polishing Genshin has, and even then Genshin has some quirks.
The way Tower of Fantaasy goes is *gasp* actually trying to do something different, being a game with a shared world like a mmo is a nice change of pace, the mobility of the game makes travelling not a big deal but it's fun anyway. And the combat isn't as atrocious as this video makes it look like, it's more like another Mihoyo game, Honkai Impact.
But yea, some aspects are lacking and the game is rough around the edges, most people won't look past that, but the ones that does are having great fun. I know we can't expect the game to have so many updates as genshin or even that the game lives as long tho.

    • @joyeuse8524
      @joyeuse8524 2 года назад

I'd also say the game is so different from genshin that it should be seen on it's own light instead, exploration elements are similar to genshin but with all the artifacts it's actually closer to Zelda instead, and the combat is actually much better than genshin's, much closer to Honkai actually, although it's still pretty rough around the edges I'd say the game does have a lot of potential
Also, I'll say this once because I was talking about it with some friends, basically the game is not just way more generous than genshin, but even the gacha is actually cheaper and much more friendly...

my impression after 5 days playing tower of fantasy :
    1. the game is so buggy, i said buggy it's because it happened to me multiple times like suddenly sinking to the ground, throwing ball of the cliff with no reason, and whatever.
    2. the server is so laggy, to the point where i walking alone i suddenly teleported to random places, or having my character teleported to location A, and my camera at location B. also fighting world boss in a party is not fun at all, the animation sucks, i cant even tell when where and what are the boss throwing at me. the perfect dodge that trigger some kind of time freezing somehow made my character stunned, paralized, or knocked back for no reason. skills sometime not properly triggered, delayed, or even not triggered at all.
    3. the higher the level, the more "grindier" it become. i mean, it's not 100% bad, but as someone who played on the first day, i dont want to left behind by my friend in terms of character progression just because i worked on the day, and now it takes hours of playtime just for leveling from 30 to 33. if you play game from sunset to sunrise then maybe its not a problem, but for someone who can only play for 3-4 hours this is problem for me.

Tower of Fantasy probably should have not tried so hard to "copy" Genshin; you can see it in its UI. When copying a game that has a lot of acclaim, it will inevitably be compared to it, and a lot of its production values (graphical and sound) just look very cheap in comparison. I think it should have just tried to be its own thing, it could have still had waifus and anime but with a very different look and feel.

I heavily disagree on "its funny" when sth that is advertized to be limited is given for free. I get the logic of - you have a ton of money so shut up. But realistically, what you are normalizing is called - a scam. If you tell people they have to pay to receive something and the day after give it out for free - it is a definition of false advertisiment and a scam. Additionally, shaming people for spending money for games is very oldschool. It is a hobby as any other, by this logic people should also not go out drinking or buy a book as it is just a hobby. I never whaled in my life, but I really am tired of this oldschool perspective that spending money on a game is wrong, especially from streamer and youtubers who mostly live off the fact that us watching them is our hobby and many people support them financially too...are they fools for it? The developers and the distributor had a falling out which led to Genshin deciding to do its own launch on all platforms. Everyone expected it to fail. This distributor that shall not be named even tried to rally the Chinese antis against the game which is why you see Genshin have 200 million negative reviews. But it turns out that you can't keep a good game down and the game succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams, to the point where the distributor mentioned tried to extend an olive branch to (then miHoYo) and was rebuffed. To be fair, most people are still in a honeymoon phase with TOF right now. People are willing to ignore the cracks in the foundation to a large extent because they haven't been massively effected by the issues. Give it a couple more weeks when everyone has collected all the in game pulls, they've explored the map fully, and their is no real reason to be doing much of anything in the game. Loot from chests in general at this point is just trash. Literally we're collecting trash level white items most of the time that at best only have a use in mass expenditure like the white level weapon xp batteries. TOF has exactly the same problem built into the game that most of these gotcha games have built in. The game is only as fun and viable until you reach the end of the campaign in most cases and then it's a matter of how much money you're willing to pump into the game. When the majority of the player base hits that point is when people at large are going to drop it virtually over night.

As a day 1 genshin player, genshin's biggest issue is simply it being a gacha game. It is very clearly designed as a single player, story focused game, with continual story & world expansions. but since the game is a gacha game, it has dailies that demand you to be logging on if you want to get the premium currency for your pulls (or you have to swipe). but since the game is designed as a single player game, it's not designed with an endgame loop. and that's why people get burned out and disappointed. the game has good combat, but with no endgame loop, there's not much to be doing that facilitates playing the game (from a combat perspective). and if you don't care about the story, you're just sitting on your ass doing the same dailies and artifact grinding.
People who are playing the game for combat reasons will say the game has no content, is dead and sucks. people who are playing for world exploration and story are not, because those are what the devs are focusing on.

Tower of Fantasy's gameworld is supposed to be full of corruption EVERYWHERE, which is why the titular female character gets instantly corrupted when her repulsor or limiter or whatever they call the thing breaks. But you don't see any corruption in the gameworld at all. Instead what you see is green grass, blue sky, clear water, healthy animals, etc. Hell there are even a ton of raiders wandering around the gameworld. So how are there so many healthy human raiders if the world is so allegedly full of corruption? The game world does not match the setting or story in any capacity.

Everything is derivative of something else. Literally nothing is entirely original.
Plagiarism is one thing, and should be condemned, but it's very clear that a lot of time and effort went into Tower of Fantasy, regardless of how much of their game may be derivative of other games in the genre. It's not like they stole source code and graphical assets. In fact, this is a large component of how we even end up with genres in the first place.
Tower of Fantasy has some concerning issues that should be criticized and should be addressed by the developers, but we really need to move beyond branding everything a rip off or clone of everything else. This nonsensical attitude goes back at least as far as Doom, Wolfenstein, and other similar games of the period that resulted in the birth of the FPS genre.

People enjoy the game differently so is also valid for meta player to actually complain about the lack of end game content. People like progression. I enjoyed both but genshin only fun for the first one or two week of the patch cause the new story (progression). People shit a lot about meta player but in reality they is the one who actually spent more time to play the game. Most meta player that I knew actually waifu player but they want to make their character good and that's why they went to become meta player. After playing so much, the excitement is gone. Abyss and bosses becoming so easy. The progressive of the lore is so slow. The mini event becoming a mundane tasks to do.

However, genshin to me is incredibly boring because it's purely PvE, solo playing and very easy. If I wanna a PvE solo game I'll go for something that's challenging like dark souls or has very good story like red dead redemption. Tof pvp which does bring competitiveness , which is very appealing to me and a lot of people I know while also allowing me to explore with my friends. Yes the gacha system makes it more difficult for f2p players but I've played against whales and it's really still very manageable to beat them with a much worse set of weapons. I just use the 3 ssr characters I managed to pull and none of them are great in pvp but I'll still win against people with better characters simply by knowing how to play instead of what to play.
