Thanks for this. It gave me something to watch while sitting in a crappy hotel room in Mesquite, Nevada. We just moved here from Georgia (a 2200 mile drive), and are waiting to sign the papers on the house on Monday.
@@arashnikoubashman6946 Fortunately it is way better 😀. The only reason we had to stay at this particular hotel is that it’s the only one in this small town that allows dogs.
The gameplay mechanics of downgrading your ship's power after a while (unless you keep collecting other power up icons) had become a staple in all of Video System shmups (such as Rabio Lepus, Turbo Force and Aero Fighters). Since Psikyo was founded by former Video System employees, it's easy to see why they've decided to maintain their own tradition :)
2:28 the power degradation is intrusive. I think it’s a design leftover from Sonic Wings 1 (same dev team before they quit then form Psikyo) and Sengoku Aces. The DPS potential difference between max before degrade and true max power level is notable. One of the ways to mitigate it is to touch flying enemies on purpose. You will power down, but a power up item will also appear. The power decay timer can be reset by doing this. Make sure you don’t touch bullets, though :p
i still love Gunbird and Sengoku Ace series... they arent the most difficult to learn.. they are simply fun with lots of great art, music, and gameplay... takes me back to a simpler time..
I used to play the Saturn version a lot. It was one of my favorite arcade ports to just put on and play whenever. I had the hots for the white haired Doronjou-style enemy lady! I didn't understand the Japanese so I never knew what the deal was with the voiceover extras, and I wasn't aware of the fanart contest so I wondered why the art style in the gallery was all over the place! Thanks for enlightening me on an old favorite.
It's one of those games that just hooks you with how it looks, doesn't it? Interesting choice to have the hits for. I bet it was that leather jacket she wears 👍
So, basically the Western Playstation port was trying to strip away all traces of its anime-ness, JUST when anime was becoming popular in the US for the same demographic that would have bought this game. I don't get it either. Also, love that jiggle on that character with the staff in the arcade attract scene.
I had a stroke when I found out Valnus' name in MLF is *MILF 2000.* And what's worse is it had a "sequel" on PS2 as a localized version of Shikigami no Shiro.
Far as I know, the only localized Shikigami no Shiro on the PS2 is the second one, and it's definitely not Gunbird, and the 3rd one was on the Wii, again it's own thing. The first one may be called Mobile Light Force 2, but I have never seen it in all the times I game hunted, and far as I know, it's not a Gunbird either, but part of the Castle of Shikigami/Shikigami no Shiro series.
Thanks for the episode! Nothing will ever be as good to play shumps as sitting in hey akihabara in front of a properly oriented 29 inch crt! Well, unless you manage to rotate a crt at home, some models make this less complicated, I guess.
It's funny that Mobile Light Force 2 is a port of a completely different game (Castle of Shikigami) instead of Gunbird 2. No idea what XS was thinking (and what the "We have Charlie's Angels at home" cover art was about).
I think that the power down from gunbird is kinda of a thing carried on from when the devs worked at Video System on Sonic Wings/Aero Fighters, where there's the same power down System when you are on Max power
Great video. Strange always I thought I did have this game, but I only got the sequel for the Dreamcast port of Gunbird 2. Ah yes, I am thinking of Death Smiles as another witch shooter from the Crave that was first ported to the Xbox 360.

Regarding losing powerups in shmups, I always liked the approach in the AeroFightets / SonicWings games. You can drop from the highest power up level to the 2nd highest if you stop getting powerups. But you won’t go lower (until you die.)
I think Xenon 2 does that too, but as flawed as that game is, it works because the max power you can get is stupidly powerful enough to flood the screen.
Annnd in the Playstation corner we have winner of the most absurdly irrelevant boxart of a western localization, beating out such heavyweights as Phalanx as at least that has the ship in the flipping corner! Would have liked to know who was behind each port. The first port had lots of love because the devs really thought the saturn was going to be the hot system, and it was better at 2d stuff. When it became clear that wasn't being the case, playstation ports was probably handed to someone else who was only told to get it out on the shelfs quickly. No love at all. BTW is it me or did the android version have different flight dynamics because its touch based? you moved around like a mouse. would have like to see the switch port because it would have none of that.
