Yes. This was a crowdfunded/collectible item. At $550 plus. A thick ply cardboard should've been used. Mattel failed... classics grayskull shipper was done well. I hope somebody well known in the toy community ask the brand manager about this issue.

maybe! I threw away some of my MOTU Origins packages but I cut out the back art because it's beautiful! and we moved so I have no idea where they are lol. but if I had an Eternia of my own I'd do the same and at least cut out the art, but then again there *is* the poster.
Mine arrived on Wednesday. I have a seven foot folding table that I set up with Eternia on the middle, Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain on the sides with the vintage Slime Pit in front of Snake Mountain. All 70+ of my figures another dozen vehicles are all on display all over it in a giant epic battle between the Heroes of Eternia vs Skeletors dark forces combined with the Horde and Snake Men. 7 year old me in 1984 would have passed out.
I was one of the lucky kids to get this in 1986/1987. I always treated mine as if it was the Royal Palace since there was no such playset. Thanks for sharing.
I have mine and LOVE it! Btw, I met Pixel Dan at a toy show once and he is such a nice guy and very gracious with his time. If you have a chance to meet him and say, "Hello," you really should. Great video, man!
Having the vintage, Classics and Origins Castle Grayskull already, I don't know if I'm crazy or not, but I'd sure love to see a "Cartoon Collection" Filmation-style Grayskull released.
Worth noting… there were 9,291 backers for this which means there are only 9,291 of these New Eternia sets in existence… maybe a few more at Mattel HQ… but that’s still 5,291 more than was ever made of the original Eternia. According to Mattel Engineer Mike McKittrick (quoted on Battleram Blog) only about 4,000 of the original playset were ever produced!
That number is just backers, some of them may have ordered more than one and I'm sure Mattel had some extras made for customer service (I believe Scott once said that they did a 3% over-run for that). Weren't these also made available for retailers in certain foreign markets?

I think everyone knows this by now but just in case, the vintage Blaster Hawk comes off its base and fits right into the base for the red missile launcher thing. It makes this monstrous tower even bigger! And it looks perfect. The Blaster Hawk is red with silver airbrushing, it's a great contrast to the blue, but the theme is consistent.
The Greyskull tower monorail door trap works perfect if you use the gray clip closer to the rail to hold the chain. Think of it like how a rollup door holds its chain so the door stays open or closed.
I got mine delivered yesterday and am so excited! But I agree there should be a second motor, and more track configurations. Still, it's Eternia and that is awesome!

100% agree with you on everything in this review. They should have known better and had a remediation process in place for damages. Their options for damaged boxes are short-sighted and costing them money and reputation. The art, the actual product, and the production quality are all great. But with the shipping box inadequacy and then delaying the very next Creations sale, Mattel is having a bad week.
Agreed. I’d actually love a place that based on the concept whispering woods place up that never made it to market. There are pictures of it online that surfaced a couple of years ago. But we need some more She-Ra characters. The dude bro convention that runs this line just doesn’t think this fandom likes those characters. they’re wrong.
I got mine really fast in AZ. I was among the first people that got it. Mine luckily came undamaged. My box was taped closed, however. The 3 sides were all taped closed.
My Eternia box came with a puncture and one entire side was pushed in like an accordion. Very sad about that, but what can you do, return it for a refund? No thank you. My son and I are going to unbox it today to make sure everything is there and unbroken. We opened our Vykron figure for Christmas and it was missing some chest armor. Mattel said I was past my 30 days because I ordered it back in June so it was no longer their problem. So, don’t wait to open your Mattel Creations orders.
Dan, My box showed up more thrashed than yours. I have one small tear that reached through to the HE-RO part of the artwork. Otherwise I got extremely lucky, the outside box took 95% of the damage. This still is a huge let down for box collectors.
I’m gonna try to do the impossible. I’m gonna have Eternia set up with both the MOTUC versions of Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain on each side. I might have to get rid of my dining room table first. Lol

A phenomenal playset, awesome to see it’s finally more accessible but such a shame the shipping wasn’t handled better as it’s going to be a very rare item in years to come and the box art is some of the best in the line.
love the break down... your pure excitement is contagious and really fun to see/witness... keep it up.... as the tram goes around i noticed that the new tracks still bend a little... i doubt you'd be using this like a kid and the wear and tear is kept to a minimum... but maybe try and reinforce the underside of the tracks with stiff bendable metal wire??? not sure how difficult or in the way it would be with all the accessories

Mattel needs to send replacement boxes to all the people who got one with damage box. You all need to claim for a new box even if you don't care about the damage in your box. More people claiming is more probably to be heard.
Well Mattel better start looking at what the other toy companies are doing when it comes to packaging. You cannot send high priced collected toys in that way. While on the other they need to look at Mattel just for the poster. Cause that is a very nice choice on their part to include this. Cause I know a lot of collectors would love, myself included something similar. There was a cardboard poster that came with the Haslab Victory Saber. Sadly that is not in the same league. So nice unboxing Dan and thank you for such an enjoyable video. Best 52 minutes of the day 😊.
I’ve seen a lot of people comment on having to stick the stickers themselves, the way I see it, Mattel added the holographic poster out of the “goodness of their hearts” lol Corporations are not know to be generous like that. I’m guessing they had to make up for that cost somewhere else, and that meant the stickers are not on. I say it’s worth it! I love that poster and I’ll gladly do the stickers for such a cool piece of art!
the chain on grayskull tower on both new and vintage are designed to loop the links of the chain into the pins on the right side of the trip pins, works well

We had to pay £800 plus to get this in the UK from Mattel creation so that’s roughly $1000. I’m pretty concerned now that it’s going to turn up very banged up.
I didn't even know the Eternia playset existed when I was a kid. I've got the new one now...don't have it set up anywhere yet though, because I haven't found a place to put it with it being so massive.
Always glad to see you so satisfied with this incredible playset. I didn't back this since I would have preferred this to be made for Masterverse figures, but so glad there are plenty of MOTU fans who came together to make this a reality. Fingers crossed for Masterverse scaled playsets in the future. With the incredible work, Mattel has done in giving collectors representation of the live-action movie characters, I'd love to see movie vehicles get made, Gwildor's workshop might be a fun playset, or maybe dioramas of concept art of areas within Grayskull. I'd also be up for a line of Masterverse figures based on Moebius' designs from the movie.
That third smaller vehicles kind of makes me think of Orion's hover craft from "The New Gods" and apparently He-Man is based on those comics, so it's kind of fitting.
I won't be opening mine until Xmas this year. It will be Santa's gift to my two boys, who have Greyskull and Snake Mountain already. I was lucky enough to have the original Eternia for Xmas 1986, so I want my boys to have the same epic Xmas I had!

I received mine this Thursday. The shipper box was a bit dinged up. I stressed when I picked up the box and heard things rattle. Everything was good and the Eternia box it self had a small depression in the artwork but nothing too crazy. After careful inspection, it turned out great. I know I was lucky after hearing the horrors of some backers.
Finally! Truth be told, I don't remember the original playset from the 80s at all. I'm 47 and was right there in the target demographic back then. The 80s toon was one of my favorite, in fact. I just never had more than one or two of the figures and a Dragonwalker, lol...I think my brother had the Roton. I'm pretty sure they all came from yard sales! I had a couple friends with tons of toys, but none of them ever had it. The new set looks about as "80s toy" as it gets. That's the genius behind the Origins line. They made toys that look nearly identical to the originals but work more like modern toys. I wish Playmates would have done that with their vintage designs. They would have had a goldmine on their hands.

Awesome that you measured height width and depth! Most reviewers missed at least one. I think one more thing to note is add a couple inches on each side to account for the car running along the rail!
I'm just a casual MOTU fan. Only had a handful of figures as a kid and never even knew this playset existed when I was a kid. I've been collecting the Origins figures that I like as well as Grayskull and Snake Mountain. While this set seems really fun, I passed on it. The price and size didn't make it worth it to me. But for those passionate MOTU fans, I can clearly see why this is a special piece for them. Looks really fun.
Mine arrived with a hole on the front side of the box it was missing corner protectors. I tried asking mattel for a replacement box only but it sounds like they can only refund for returns which is not what I was hoping to hear.
What an epic and thorough review, Dan! I honestly don’t know what I was thinking when I ordered this, even after seriously sitting on the decision for almost a full week before pulling the trigger (because I wanted to get King Grayskull as well). I have absolutely no room in our house for this, and it is currently sitting in its shipping box in the attic above our garage. I don’t even know what condition the main box is in other than what I could see when I opened it from the side (it looks like it may be fine, but looks can be deceiving, the shipping box definitely had a few dings and dents in places). That’s where it’s staying until I can figure out an alternative…so probably a couple of years at least. That was fun pushing a nearly 50-pound box up a narrow ladder into the attic by myself. I redirected my shipment to a nearby FedEx pickup location after hearing all the horror stories, not that it likely helped all that much. So many features on this set, I wouldn’t even know where to start! I can imagine my son and myself having hours of fun when it gets set up someday. Your enthusiasm and excitement were infectious! I could feel your giddiness with the monorail…that trap door dropping a figure into the moat is amazing! 😁 I just hope that Mattel learns from their mistakes with this and ensures that any crowdfunder in the future will be packaged better. Most of the shipping issues people have had could have been resolved with just a bit more time and effort. ~Damon
While it look really awesome, I did not get this one for two reasons. 1. Shipping to Sweden would be too much. It'd be up there around 8-900 USD. 2. I already have the vintage one so combined with the shipping, not worth it. But I am super happy for all you who got it.
For those of us who don't have the money or space for this epic playset, it's cool to get to see it all set-up and decked out with figures. I'd love Mattel to make available a full-size poster of the box art for this playset...it would make a great background for any MOTU collection.
I also want to add that the fact no one on Mattel's team seem to have thought about making multiple battery powered runners that had exchangeable clips for attaching the sky sled, or figures like Stratos or even ZOAR to fly around the battleground.
Got to admit I'm super jealous of all you MOTU fans you guys are getting some incredibly badass stuff.. why Playmates hasn't pulled the trigger on anything like this for Turtles still baffles me.
I got mine last Saturday in pristine condition and I’m thankful for that because mine will be staying in the box. I bought it with no intentions of displaying it but to at the very least own one.

Now this was the comparison time I was looking forward to and it was certainly worth the wait! The one thing I am wondering is if the motorised piece from the old Eternia works on the new monorail? Knowing Mattel, that wouldn't surprised me. 😃

I wonder if Mattel will do Havoc Tower at one point! They did do Kevin Smith's King Grayskull, and they put Skelegod on the cover of the comic so it's a longshot but might happen? Idk I'm just spitballing but it would definitely be cool and it would probably come with some extension tracks for the monorail if it does happen.
Very good review. I think for the space problem they designed the monorail to unclip and be just around central tower, so you can keep the other towers apart.

I never really liked this play set but it’s really amazing that they reproduced it and the price isn’t really high for as much as you get and how big it is.
I had a damaged Mondo MOTU box. I contacted them and they sent me a new one flat. Mattel Creations needs to send out us all new boxes FLAT. So we can replace the damaged ones
I received a shipping notice over a week ago, but so far Fed Ex has not received the package. Maybe we're getting enhanced packaging right now? I know. Wishful thinking. LOL! Thanks for giving out the dimensions! I'm building a custom shelf in the corner and cutting a half-round (four feet wide), but I needed to know the depth, so your measurements were greatly appreciated. With regards to the idea of wanting an additional motorized vehicle running at the same time with the one we get, that may not be advisable. I think the way the tracks snap into place, a secondary vehicle might surpass the weight rating for those snaps to hold, causing the tracks to come off and possibly break. As much money as we gave for these, I'm not sure I would gamble on trying that, should you land an extra motor. My early thinking on that scenario. Great video!
It looks amazing, better than the vintage one. The box looks great and it's great that they added a poster, and yes it does take up space. If I had my own house I would have purchased it and even then you have to find a great space for it. The way the packed it looks great but they should have taken cautions measures for packaging, that box is worth keep it as a collection.
Great video. Really needed that fix. Mine is still in the box until my table arrives. Went with a 7ft so they are all together. Unclear the future is on how fright zone will display.
They don't describe opening and closing that lion jaw by hand in the instructions. So hearing that popping sound when moving it from closed to open is terrifying. Just wish i knew that it's not going to break it eventually.
I agree. I just did it for the first time. I was starting to think something was wrong because I see a lot of people displaying it open. And the artwork always has it open.
It really feels like it's held by a very small tab. I would not want to move it very often. I think it would be wise to just decide if you want the mouth open or closed on display and leave it that way... That's what I'm doing.

I just designed a track adapter to at least hold the other pieces on the track itself. If people are excited I’ll work on a motorized version

I’ve seen a lot of people comment on having to stick the stickers themselves, the way I see it, Mattel added the holographic poster out of the “goodness of their hearts” lol Corporations are not know to be generous like that. I’m guessing they had to make up for that cost somewhere else, and that meant the stickers are not on. I say it’s worth it! I love that poster and I’ll gladly do the stickers for such a cool piece of art!
the chain on grayskull tower on both new and vintage are designed to loop the links of the chain into the pins on the right side of the trip pins, works well
I started laughing when I pictured Mosquitor trying to use the keyboard. He'd have to lean further back so his face didn't hit the keys and stretch his arms out to type.

We had to pay £800 plus to get this in the UK from Mattel creation so that’s roughly $1000. I’m pretty concerned now that it’s going to turn up very banged up.

I didn't even know the Eternia playset existed when I was a kid. I've got the new one now...don't have it set up anywhere yet though, because I haven't found a place to put it with it being so massive.

Always glad to see you so satisfied with this incredible playset. I didn't back this since I would have preferred this to be made for Masterverse figures, but so glad there are plenty of MOTU fans who came together to make this a reality. Fingers crossed for Masterverse scaled playsets in the future. With the incredible work, Mattel has done in giving collectors representation of the live-action movie characters, I'd love to see movie vehicles get made, Gwildor's workshop might be a fun playset, or maybe dioramas of concept art of areas within Grayskull. I'd also be up for a line of Masterverse figures based on Moebius' designs from the movie.
That third smaller vehicles kind of makes me think of Orion's hover craft from "The New Gods" and apparently He-Man is based on those comics, so it's kind of fitting.

The chain jail isn’t supposed to hang over like that. Just c-clip the chain on the arm , it works pretty well. I’ll make a video on it
I won't be opening mine until Xmas this year. It will be Santa's gift to my two boys, who have Greyskull and Snake Mountain already. I was lucky enough to have the original Eternia for Xmas 1986, so I want my boys to have the same epic Xmas I had!

I received mine this Thursday. The shipper box was a bit dinged up. I stressed when I picked up the box and heard things rattle. Everything was good and the Eternia box it self had a small depression in the artwork but nothing too crazy. After careful inspection, it turned out great. I know I was lucky after hearing the horrors of some backers.
Finally! Truth be told, I don't remember the original playset from the 80s at all. I'm 47 and was right there in the target demographic back then. The 80s toon was one of my favorite, in fact. I just never had more than one or two of the figures and a Dragonwalker, lol...I think my brother had the Roton. I'm pretty sure they all came from yard sales! I had a couple friends with tons of toys, but none of them ever had it. The new set looks about as "80s toy" as it gets. That's the genius behind the Origins line. They made toys that look nearly identical to the originals but work more like modern toys. I wish Playmates would have done that with their vintage designs. They would have had a goldmine on their hands.
It just depends on how much one was into MOTU. I'm 46 myself, and I remember Eternia very well. I kept up for the whole run. 1982-1988
@@ForEterniaI think that's really it. I was really into the cartoon, but my only exposure to the toys was through friends who owned them. And none of them had Eternia. I don't think I even remember any commercials for it.

Awesome that you measured height width and depth! Most reviewers missed at least one. I think one more thing to note is add a couple inches on each side to account for the car running along the rail!

I'm just a casual MOTU fan. Only had a handful of figures as a kid and never even knew this playset existed when I was a kid. I've been collecting the Origins figures that I like as well as Grayskull and Snake Mountain. While this set seems really fun, I passed on it. The price and size didn't make it worth it to me. But for those passionate MOTU fans, I can clearly see why this is a special piece for them. Looks really fun.
Mine arrived with a hole on the front side of the box it was missing corner protectors. I tried asking mattel for a replacement box only but it sounds like they can only refund for returns which is not what I was hoping to hear.
What an epic and thorough review, Dan! I honestly don’t know what I was thinking when I ordered this, even after seriously sitting on the decision for almost a full week before pulling the trigger (because I wanted to get King Grayskull as well). I have absolutely no room in our house for this, and it is currently sitting in its shipping box in the attic above our garage. I don’t even know what condition the main box is in other than what I could see when I opened it from the side (it looks like it may be fine, but looks can be deceiving, the shipping box definitely had a few dings and dents in places). That’s where it’s staying until I can figure out an alternative…so probably a couple of years at least. That was fun pushing a nearly 50-pound box up a narrow ladder into the attic by myself. I redirected my shipment to a nearby FedEx pickup location after hearing all the horror stories, not that it likely helped all that much.
So many features on this set, I wouldn’t even know where to start! I can imagine my son and myself having hours of fun when it gets set up someday. Your enthusiasm and excitement were infectious! I could feel your giddiness with the monorail…that trap door dropping a figure into the moat is amazing! 😁
I just hope that Mattel learns from their mistakes with this and ensures that any crowdfunder in the future will be packaged better. Most of the shipping issues people have had could have been resolved with just a bit more time and effort.

While it look really awesome, I did not get this one for two reasons. 1. Shipping to Sweden would be too much. It'd be up there around 8-900 USD. 2. I already have the vintage one so combined with the shipping, not worth it. But I am super happy for all you who got it.
omg this would have been the dream to my young self back than, I don't think we had it here in Brazil at the time.
For those of us who don't have the money or space for this epic playset, it's cool to get to see it all set-up and decked out with figures. I'd love Mattel to make available a full-size poster of the box art for this playset...it would make a great background for any MOTU collection.
I also want to add that the fact no one on Mattel's team seem to have thought about making multiple battery powered runners that had exchangeable clips for attaching the sky sled, or figures like Stratos or even ZOAR to fly around the battleground.

I got mine last Saturday in pristine condition and I’m thankful for that because mine will be staying in the box. I bought it with no intentions of displaying it but to at the very least own one.

Mine is nonexistent haha but I definitely enjoyed this review! and yeah it would have been a bit cooler if there were at *least* two motors for the monorail. I wonder if Mattel will do Havoc Tower at one point! They did do Kevin Smith's King Grayskull, and they put Skelegod on the cover of the comic so it's a longshot but might happen? Idk I'm just spitballing but it would definitely be cool and it would probably come with some extension tracks for the monorail if it does happen.
Very good review. I think for the space problem they designed the monorail to unclip and be just around central tower, so you can keep the other towers apart.

I never really liked this play set but it’s really amazing that they reproduced it and the price isn’t really high for as much as you get and how big it is.

I received a shipping notice over a week ago, but so far Fed Ex has not received the package. Maybe we're getting enhanced packaging right now? I know. Wishful thinking. LOL! Thanks for giving out the dimensions! I'm building a custom shelf in the corner and cutting a half-round (four feet wide), but I needed to know the depth, so your measurements were greatly appreciated. With regards to the idea of wanting an additional motorized vehicle running at the same time with the one we get, that may not be advisable. I think the way the tracks snap into place, a secondary vehicle might surpass the weight rating for those snaps to hold, causing the tracks to come off and possibly break. As much money as we gave for these, I'm not sure I would gamble on trying that, should you land an extra motor. My early thinking on that scenario. Great video!

It looks amazing, better than the vintage one. The box looks great and it's great that they added a poster, and yes it does take up space. If I had my own house I would have purchased it and even then you have to find a great space for it. The way the packed it looks great but they should have taken cautions measures for packaging, that box is worth keep it as a collection.

Great video. Really needed that fix. Mine is still in the box until my table arrives. Went with a 7ft so they are all together. Unclear the future is on how fright zone will display.
They don't describe opening and closing that lion jaw by hand in the instructions. So hearing that popping sound when moving it from closed to open is terrifying. Just wish i knew that it's not going to break it eventually.
I agree. I just did it for the first time. I was starting to think something was wrong because I see a lot of people displaying it open. And the artwork always has it open.
@MsBee I just want to see some kind of official statement saying yes its OK to click that back and forth, it's designed to do that.
It really feels like it's held by a very small tab. I would not want to move it very often. I think it would be wise to just decide if you want the mouth open or closed on display and leave it that way... That's what I'm doing.
Mattel killed it with Snake Mountain and now Eternia. Can’t wait to see what they do with a new playset with the Snake Fortress!
