There’s something I love so much about the walking form of the Combine soldiers in HL:Alyx. it’s so collectively professional & uniform like the Soviets, yet it also seems so relaxed & imposing, like US mercenaries/elite forces… which is really fitting since Combine soldiers in their earliest concepts had a strange blend of experimental qualities of both Soviet & US militaristic themes. The Eastern European setting with Soviet imagery makes this video all the more chilling & dystopian.
It really seems indicative of a ground unit that are comfortable in their own skin. no anxiety nor overflowing signs of stress and alertness. It’s so puzzling since it really seems to imply that the Combine-human occupation forces being so successful at stamping out anti-Combine resistance that it’s pitiful, perhaps even laughable. Literally to the point that when it comes to highly trained, heavily armed Overwatch elites responding to a vault breach within A CITY. Then they barley have anything to truly fear.. Because the disparity is truly ridiculous, even they know their practically uncontested, apex predators among a near helpless herd of basically farm animals. The same animals that wouldn’t be able to put up a fight regardless if it’s in the city or wastelands. Whether the farm animals had weapons or not would barely make a difference. I bet these Combine soldiers would be annoyed to even be in the presence of civilians without being able to kill them, because that’s what their designed to do. Their so relaxed because they know they could kill ALL OF THEM at any time the moment ANY hostilities break out. and that’s really disturbing. it’s like watching a bunch of sharks SOMEHOW refraining themselves from ripping apart a bunch of static seals. The fact they refrain is what makes them unlike natural shark, but alien.
@@doobl7502And then you hear them talk ingame and it turns out they're just a bunch of tired, scared and brainwashed soldiers. Those masks and burly clothes are mostly just for intimidation and life support. Without them they look like malnourished and deformed terminal patients. That walk style is probably because they don't get enough breaks, and patrol the same boring routes overtime. You can even hear them breathe heavily. Doubt the combine gives them a proper work schedule lol

Just imagining the entirety of Half-life storyline to actually happening, living through the effects of the Resonance Cascade trying to survive from the sudden onslaught of Xen aliens, fauna etc. not mention the resulting problems with zombies, inhabitable areas with high levels of radiation and the other various huge growing problems along with the worsening state of the environment. And then, the Combine attacks and finally puts the whole of humanity on it's knees completely, with absolutely no hope of getting out of what the world had become. Thus: this video
