One memory that will always tell me to save whenever I get a chance.... I was playing Pokemon Yellow via the adapter on N64's Pokemon Stadium. I had been playing for almost my whole Saturday, just grinding out my pokemon after starting a new game. I think I was near the 6th gym when my cat hopped up onto my cabinet. She did this sometimes and would just sit and look around. But this time, she decided to walk around, and as she did, she stepped over my N64.... or at least she tried to, but she ended up putting a paw right on the reset button. I was angry, loaded up the game to find I hadn't saved since after beating Brock. Now, I save. Often.
I hate the Auto save feature with a passion and it needs to die. It makes games easier and doesn't punish you when you die. I liked having to fight my way to the next save point and if I died or forgot to save then would get start cussing which is part of the gaming experience for me. I think thats why I liked the Dragon Quest game because they punish you if you die and send you far back.
I solved all my problems with retrogames thanks to emulation. Save states, graphic improvements (remove sprite limits and overclocking to avoid flickering and slow downs). Not to mention all the improvement patches and hacks.
For me: the internal battery in a Sega Saturn: the contacts were slightly corroded and I needed to order a lid for the back (and obviously some batteries). I don't have any RPG's for Saturn but I wasn't too fond of losing my NiGHTS and Sega Rally scores LOL 😅 Turns out there's a two-word solution for this: Action Replay

This is exactly, how Evercade and emulators allowed me to explore many classic games. I do not have the time to replay from the start each and every time and I often play these games just to see the graphic, hear the chiptune music, shoot the crap out of some stuff. As we grow older, we are having less time at our disposal and we tend to become more casual players. That is life and it is good that technology gives the freedom of choice in how you want to approach your games. Just last week, I had to return one of my Evercade cartridges due to memory failure, which would cause me to lose like 3 hours of progress in my beloved Sword of Ianna. Fortunately, the game has level codes, so I could get myself close to the point, where I left off on the old cartridge.

Game saving is a thing I make a point to remember with old games. You can't just turn off the system and expect everything is going to be there. Gotta get to that save point.
This is why I like older games. Even in the new Mario RPG remake the save points in the are useless because it autosaves very often and doesn't punish you if you die. Getting to the next save point is very satisfying.

I did not expect to see a video mention "Super Caesars Palace" today. When I was probaly 8 or 9 years old my uncle let me borrow his Sega Genesis, this was the only game he had. Being a kid, I had no clue what to do or how to do anything. I played it twice and my parents gave it back to him.
Haha yeah. My uncle bought me a copy back in the 90's. He probably found it for a couple dollars. My brother and I disliked this game back then and we still do - haha.
old games generally don't save because they are short games, many NES games and Megadrive games we finish in less than an hour, with a save point it would make the games very easy, it took me 3 months to finish Revenge of Shinobi on the Sega Megadrive when I was a kid, now on my Megadrive Classic Mini I finish it in less than an hour, I don't consider myself a game collector but as I've never sold any game or any system I have more than 800 games and more than 30 consoles, but to play old games I only play on the classic mini consoles , I put hundreds of games in them a, they have an HDMI output and most importantly I can save any game at any time, excellent video and excellent channel.i love it.
I get why you feel that way, but there was just no way older games could have implemented auto-save systems or be as save friendly as we now expect. It is not a technical issue, but rather an economic one. We are now used to buying lots of games, and having most of them feature dozens of hours of content. But up to the mid-90s most kids only got a few (expensive) games. And many games of that time don't really have more than a few hours of content. Parents would be upset if you were finished with that expensive game after only a couple of days, so it was imperative that the game was hard and made you repeat and train certain sections until you got good. In RPGs the situation was a bit different but even then most RPGs of the time would not top 30 hours, while now we expect hundreds.
What comes to mind for me first was my friend and I were playing through Bloodborne at the same time. Man that's crazy! I just finished up a modern retro JRPG throwback on my Series X called _Light Fairytale_ that has *so many* Quality-of-Life mechanics built in (down to being able to speed up the game, to turning on an Augmented Reality/Detective Vision-type mode that will show will "danger zones" are so you know where random battles will occur, to itself being split into Episodes so you make real progress with only 3-4 hours in there. Very refreshing), when I also just a few weeks ago rolled off of Parasite Eve because the random battles were bugging me and felt like a waste of time, lmao. I really want to make progress in that one of these days, but I always forget I should play it via Duckstation or something and instead just pop my genuine copy into my PS3. I just don't like playing games on the PC, so emulation always slips my mind. But save states and other modern pleasantries would really help me get through Parasite Eve, boy... *I'm 100% with you.* You _really_ feel it with retro games in particular. They are not concerned with speeding you along. They are concerned with taking their time and making sure, if you're renting it, you should probably buy it because you're not finishing it before Blockbuster will want it back 😄
I was a bit late in leaving a comment on your previous video as I didn't see it until a couple days ago. So in case you missed it, happy new year and congrats on getting married! 🙂🎉
Final Fantasy 3 (or 6 on SNES) did that to me. You go up the tower full of stairs and then the boss does the ultima spell and wipes out the party. Lost a few hours on that one. Ughhh
Yeah, definitely one of the worst parts. I think padded game time was a consequence of perceived consumer expectations that games last forever, especially given the cost which would have been like $125 or more in 2023 dollars, and there weren't yet many gameplay innovations to make those situations sting a little less (like you see in modern roguelike/lite games, or souls games, though I think technical limitations may have precluded at least some of that).
Those CR2032 batteries in retro games are awful. I deliberately avoided buying those games for my collection. Anyway, don't give up on the channel, although I'm not a NES or Flintstones fan I still like your content.
There's a lot of games with battery backup. It may be worthwhile investing in a cheap soldering iron. Batteries are like $2-3 in bulk. You can even install battery mounts which makes replacing a battery in the future much easier.
You are correct. However, this hobby has been named, as is most commonly referred to as "Retro Gaming" by the community (incorrect or not), which is why I refer to is as such. Thank you for watching!
I'm from Vegas. The branded Vegas casino games, like Super Caesar's, were sold in some of the gift shops. They sold them at the game stores too but nobody bought them. They were always in the bargain bin along with outdated sports games. I mean who's going to buy them? Tourists? They're not going out of their way to buy a SNES game that won't make them money. Kids don't want them. They're boring. Adults can gamble for real. I don't know figures but Caesar's had to lose money on that game. It's baffling they would even make it, honestly. It really is trash. It's just a garbage game
Honestly I'd rather have my time wasted because I forgot to save rather than a game wasting my time with entirely pointless content like fetch quest or traversing empty environments.
Subscribed because cat. Also i get it, but I think modern games make it too easy. If i die and go right back to where i was five seconds ago, where's the tension? There's a middle ground to be found and I feel like not enough games, old or new, get it right.
my lord if you got pissed about lose your recent playthrough in a JRPG game NEVER play any shin megami tensei. Take my advice, you'll got so mad to die in a normal enemy combat that you'll rethink why you started to play that painful asshole game.
"What I hate about Autosave on RPGS" is a more appropriate title for this video. But one thing that I hate about RUclips Videos... Incorrect titles to get more views.
The focus of my video is not on "autosaves" or lack thereof. How will your title be more accurate? If I took your advice, my videos title would be "incorrect". It's about losing progress due to lack of saving, which can be a common occurrence with retro gaming (which is "what I HATE about Retro Video Games"). I think my title fits nicely. Thanks for watching, Rob Robbie Rob Rob!
They aren't "retro" games they are vintage games. Retro is when something tries to appear vintage but is not actually old. Retro handhelds are a thing. Retro mini consoles are a thing. Buying old games is not retro. The entire community using the term incorrectly makes everyone look dumb.
@@RonManGaming I don't have a problem. I was pointing out your incorrect use of a word. Was making an effort to help you. If someone doesn't know they are wrong they can't fix it. You now know. If you choose to continue to be wrong that my friend would be your problem.
@@RonManGaming well, that's the thing. computer games are so diverse and you can use whatever operating system you want, so it's impossible to have a favourite. For instance, I can boot up a 68k classic mac and play escape velocity, while at the same time I can be "playing" in photoshop and at the same time... etc, etc. If you could do that with a console game on a console, there would be no console, only computers.
Old games that came out in the 90's have this air of non-chalance and lifty sesation which I find cute and relaxing. But if I go back and play games that came out in the mid to late 2000's, they give me a sense of dread and depression, even if the context of the game is meant to elicit humor and joy. It just makes me feel so empty on the inside. Like being stuck in purgatory. It makes me nauseous. Also didn't help that most games in that era had that poo poo pee pee brown filter. Yuck. just yuck.
The inability to save in some retro games is what I love about save states and roms.

You can even install battery mounts which makes replacing a battery in the future much easier.
i almost never go through an old game without the game genie in unless i have played it a lot and am decent enough at it to play without it hahaha
Hey - the game genie is tons of fun!
"Retro" typically refers to things that imitate a style or design from the past. What you seem to mean is "old".
You are correct. However, this hobby has been named, as is most commonly referred to as "Retro Gaming" by the community (incorrect or not), which is why I refer to is as such. Thank you for watching!
When you put in a modern game and deny the update only to find after you beat the first boss the game crashes because you didn't get the update
Ugh - yeah!
This is why i only emulate my old games because save states fix the one thing i hate about old games.
Yeah, for sure!
Haha yeah - you make a good point. A lot of those open world games can feel empty.
Also hate that we can’t save on some
Absolutely!
Subscribed because cat. Also i get it, but I think modern games make it too easy. If i die and go right back to where i was five seconds ago, where's the tension? There's a middle ground to be found and I feel like not enough games, old or new, get it right.
Thanks for the sub! You make a great point - many new games are very easy.
LOL don't be so soft, it's what made us!
That's so true! I didn't think of it like that.
What I hate is the prices lol
Oh yeah - the prices are terrible!
I would have paid good money to see that "react" video of you losing all that progress. Lol!
Hahaha yeah - that would have been great!
Shining in the Darkness...multiple times.
Too late! I been here and I aint leaving!!!
yup excessive grinding and being unable to continue on really hard games
The dying is the progress.
That's a good way to look at it!
OMG hwat a piece of traash caesar's palace is, and even worse that any casino games exist at all are such gabbage
I shoulda heard whole viodeo before talk about waste 3 hours. Ya the casino situation fully understand how thatv happens.
Moi c'est l'oreille que je me pince.
my lord
if you got pissed about lose your recent playthrough in a JRPG game NEVER play any shin megami tensei. Take my advice, you'll got so mad to die in a normal enemy combat that you'll rethink why you started to play that painful asshole game.
Haha, I've actually been thinking about jumping into SMT 5.
Yeah that freaking sucks. I don't think your channel sucks.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
I play GBA
LOVE IT
GBA is great!
@@RonManGaming Amazing even 👍
Hi.
Hey! Thanks for stopping by!
@@RonManGaming :)
I like your channel Ron. I don't think it sucks.
Thanks, Ricky!
Thanks for watching, Rob Robbie Rob Rob!
hi
Hey! How's it going?
They aren't "retro" games they are vintage games. Retro is when something tries to appear vintage but is not actually old. Retro handhelds are a thing. Retro mini consoles are a thing. Buying old games is not retro. The entire community using the term incorrectly makes everyone look dumb.
Words can often have more than one definition; "retro" being one of them. However, I thinks that's neither here nor there.
@@RonManGaming You certainly don't need to incorrectly justify yourself to me. You can choose to be as ignorant as you want to be.
Perfect. So what's your problem then?
@@RonManGaming I don't have a problem. I was pointing out your incorrect use of a word. Was making an effort to help you. If someone doesn't know they are wrong they can't fix it. You now know. If you choose to continue to be wrong that my friend would be your problem.
i hate video games. computer games are much better
Nice! Which computer game is your favourite?
Yuck. just yuck.
