    Its Asceticism (a-set-is-ism) not Aestheticism (as-tet-is-ism)
    Ascetism: to be ascetic, spartan, denying of the body

    57:35 While this is true in a lot of the middle east, it's also notably true in a lot of Southeast Asia. Places like Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, and several other nearby nations (even if not explictly SEA, like Taiwan and kinda Japan [sometimes, they're still mad about American military bases so don't be American]) have a similar culture. I recall a true crime story in one of them, I watch a lot so I forget which crime or what country, but the locals viewed it as more reprehensible than if it was one of their own who was killed. The culture stresses the importance of guests, they are to be cared for, respected, and treated like a friend or even family, and this extends to things like people's willingness to help you.
    If you're lost, homeless, need a meal, or even just a warm place to rest during a travel, you can almost always rely on people from these types of nations (Despite the demonisation, this includes countries you would normally associate with evil, because of US propaganda) including even Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, South Korea, etc.
    The only expectactions they will place on you as a foreign guest will be that you respect their culture as much as possible (Shoes off indoors for many of them, silence during prayer, for devout Muslims being left alone during their prayer, treating them with respect, using polite terms to refer to them, and even things like showing a willingness to learn and understand. For example if you're awful at using chopsticks, instead of requesting a fork you'll usually be more pleasant to them if you ask for guidance and being shown how to use it, even if a fork ends up being supplied. The act of trying and being willing to learn is what matters most to most of these cultures.
    ***Do not take advantage of this cultural kindness.*** Live streaming lunatics are causing irreperable harm to this openness and polite society, for example if I recall correctly a major tourist spot in Japan have had to ban tourists from entering areas rife with Geisha, because the tourists will never listen and keep touching them. Treat Geisha's kinda like a stripper at an R rated bar. You look, you don't touch. They're paid to be nice and flirt with you, it is not an invitation. And by god do not be weird about things if you walk past one walking down the street. Don't take photos, don't get in her way, and don't bother her. She's got shit to do and you have no part in those plans.
    I wish Western cultures had this type of open friendliness, but unfortunately, we don't. And honestly that kinda sucks. That friendliness can make life itself feel less isolating.

    • @marocat4749
      @marocat4749 День назад

      And from what i know japanese mostly think of foreigners as ignorant of the often strict social rules do are pretty forgiving , just dont be a jerk. 😢
      youtuber had a funny idea that maybe hide a yakuza in the stuff to jumpscare tourists and scare tourists to behave, as part of their job is looking intimitating , and it was jokey but still
      dunno if that would work but there are more creative ways to disguise stuff in there that can make watched by, somrone who can throw out folk if needed.
      Babbing seems counter to tourism i mean. There better ways to try scaring tourists to behave

      In the UK it's pretty murky.

      In Canada, a college is a lower level post-secondary school. You go to University for 4 years to get a degree in math or psychology. You go to college for 1-2 years to get a diploma in massage therapy or police foundations, etc.

    47:40 one way to think about it is yes, kind of like the Pope, except if the fifth Pope decided to make his position hereditary, and his literal successor actually murders the fuck out of Jesus' grandson, who is loved and revered by a huge proportion of Christendom at the time and still is to this day, and even the side that was nominally on the Pope's side thought he was bad and that you needed a class of scholars and jurists who were independent of the Pope and secular power to offset the Pope's influence, up until the point when all of them were conquered by Martians and are subjected to Martian ideas of the state and religious law- look, the analogy isn't exact, okay?

    38:40 I know it's kinda rare that someone from BTB reads & reacts to these comments, but curious if you've considered an internal style guide to differentiate between pazzzphiles and child molzzzers? I only ask because this is the first time where Robert referred to someone as the former ("or he's a _________") and I thought maybe he meant that specific thing and not the other thing. (I also realize in all(?) prior episodes it has meant the latter.) Not that I particularly care, but given that they do mean different things and the latter term may or may not be more censorship friendly in addition to usually being more accurate, thought this seemed worth mentioning. E: Classic "commenting too early" syndrome, didn't realize this was the episode that was going to get into it. I even listened like 15 min past where it was first brought up!
