  • In 2007 it was decided to replicate the Hornibrook Bridge in Redcliffe, Queensland. The old Hornibrook viaduct which was opened in 1935 and closed in 1972 was to be demolished. Our story looks at the history of the old viaduct and the present Hornibrook bridge (Houghton Highway) and follows the demolition through to construction and completion of the final structure. This film was supported by the Redcliffe City Council, now the Moreton Bay Regional Council and the people of the region.

Iappreciated that bit of history…..being a relative newcomer to Redcliffe in 1980

I have great memories of crossing the old bridge on my way to my job at the High School. I was an American recruited by the Labor Government of the time. I travelled it often, and even enjoyed the bumpy ride. It opened the way to Brisbane, a place to later become my home as I took a job at Kelvin Grove College of Advanced Education. I was a Lecturer there and enjoyed my time there. I lived in Brisbane for two years and had the opportunity to travel the newer bridge in 1978 and drive by my place at Bay Boats. All great memories. My students are now retired teachers and, I still am in contact with a few of them. They have visited me near Silicon Valley, California, and their kids have taken trips here later as well. I have a sweet spot in my heart for Redcliffe, and Australia, overall.

I remember last time I walked over it I was surprised it was open to the public. There were holes in the deck big enough for a child to fall clear through into the water, easy.

The bridge girders on the eastern side were severely attacked by termites, Coptotermes acinaciformis. The girders on the western side of the bridge had very little to no termite infestations. I was a member of a team from QLD Forest Services that undertook an inspection of the bridge timbers after the closure of the bridge and before its dismantling.

It's a shame the old bridge could not be saved, as it was used by pedestrians and recreational fishers after the new bridge was opened. I had the privilege of walking along the old bridge around 2002-03 before it was demolished completely.
