    What's most amazing about Phelps is that he actually swam home after the Olympics.

    no he just has such a perfect stroke he can afford to breath every stroke and his body is in almost a straight line when he breathes so it dosnt slow him down almost at all

    if u see the ripples of the water made by a butterflyer, u can make out a butterfly shape, its unforgiving if the technique isnt done correctly, but when it is... it feels effortless and fluent

  • @metal_banshee
    @metal_banshee 15 лет назад

    Flyinglawnmower812: I swim the butterfly and im one of the top swimmers in my district so listen to me. Phelps has incredible shoulder flexibility, so when he breathes, he can keep his shoulders and head in line with his body. That's how he can stay fast while breathing so much. So unless you are very flexible in your shoulders, I don't recommend breathing every stroke.

    Fly takes so much energy and strenght, a 100 hurts ...

  • @sijas
    @sijas 17 лет назад

    well have you noticed that all the great swimmers do something that goes against the "common rules?"
    for example, phelps breathes every stroke in fly, thorpe breathes every other stroke in free, hansen does a sideways turn and he doesn't set up his outsweep much.
    there are just certain things that work for certain people.
    wut coaches teach is wut works for the majority of people

  • @jgiraldo26

    I think his coach said that when he doesn't breathe every stroke his hips tend to sink but when he breathes every stroke he can keep his hips higher

    apart from breathing at every stroke
    he has an extremely powerful dolphin kick.
    look the other guy in the video not even close to the force or the quality of the technique of Phelps.
    I think that his kicking is making the difference (this tremendous kicking also explains why he needs air constantly). His kicking also helps him to have "easily" his head out so it is a win win situation.

  • @delmarnam888
    @delmarnam888 11 лет назад

    butterfly pushes your head out of the water, so in the 1 second your head is out of the water, you have nothing better to do then to breath. trying to do it every other stroke can be difficult, and for gods sakes they're Olympians, I think they know what they're doing
    Sorry if i took your comment to seriously though

  • @cburke10
    @cburke10 16 лет назад

    shenanigans!
    he medals in 100-400m which are not similar distances and he showed perfection in practically every stroke (IM wins at 200 and 400)
    I dont think it would be like Bolt getting 5 races of similar distances, i think it would be him getting an event like hurdles that works different muscles and requires different strategy
    Either way, every country in the world brought their best and Phelps made them look like children almost every single time

    Yeah lifting your head from the water takes a lot of strength and slows you down quite a bit. If he didn't have to do it he would have a lot more energy throughout the race and would be more aero dynamic.

  • @maulcs
    @maulcs 13 лет назад

    @MrNosidda I would also think that breathing every stroke would give you more oxygen, hence more energy.

  • @MrNosidda

    @Twilightlover199 cause he is a badass and he can, that and once you get good enough at fly breathing every stroke wont impede your speed at all

    Nice Phelps race stroke capture, Andrew. You can modify the Fly for longer distances and open water, which obviously "benefits society through accelerated human evolution". ;-)

  • @swimmer4ever200687
    @swimmer4ever200687 16 лет назад

    yes and also it will be like that if its in the 50 fly but in the case of 200 fly and the 400 im he should make a tradeoff between the breath and the speed , i mean in the 50 fly he would say , i dont want the breath and i dont want recovery alll i want is speed ,
    but in the 400 im and the 200 fly he needs recovery and he needs to finish the first 100 and he is not 100 exhausted even if that will decrease his speed , coz the 2nd will be so much better than if he make the 1st without breath

  • @moleberrybush
    @moleberrybush 12 лет назад

    i think you have your numbers off. A 50 is only two laps in a short course pool. The chicks on my team swim 28s. the world record for a 50 is around 18 seconds.

  • @funnyvids101
    @funnyvids101 15 лет назад

    rs1893.. i wouldnt say that the breathing during the stroke is the hard part. even mediocre swimmers learn that they need air. . . i would say the hardest part about swimming in relation to breathing is off the wall. sometimes after a flip turn your lungs are screaming at you to get to the surface. if you watch phelps off a flip turn, he goes maybe 2-3 extra dolphin kicks past the rest of the competition. this is because his breathing power is just superior.

    @Roger007Audioslave for freestyle/ back? legs always going except when you do dolphin off a flip turn or dive (freestyle). you need to breathe as little as possible while still taking in oxygen. i breathe about every 10 for freestyle for 50m and an average of every 6-8 for 100m. it all depends on your distance and your lung capacity.
