  • These are Mallards landing on a local ice covered lake, from last winter. It was funny watching them try to apply the brakes once they made contact with the ice. They also had a favorite spot picked out to forage for food.
    Questions and Answers:
Q: How can I tell the male Mallards from the females?
A: The males have a green head, white neck ring and brown chest. Females are more spotted with cream and brown. Both have yellow bills and orange legs and feet.
    Q: Where do Mallards live?
A: In North America, they can be found at most lakes and ponds, sometimes even at slow moving streams or creeks.
    Q: What do Mallards eat?
A: Mostly plants material, such as seeds, stems, roots and grass. Some eat small frogs, crustaceans and earth worms. I have noticed that they love cracked corn.

Hopefully they did not hurt their delicate feet when landing on the ice....
