    Christmas Day, 2001. The stage has been set for humanity's counter-attack against the BETA. At Sadogashima, Imperial Japanese troops return to the island alongside forces of the United Nations. These allies will bring to bear every weapon and tactic available to them in order to win, as the future of UN efforts in the war will be decided by the outcome of this offensive.
    In the world of Muv-Luv Alternative, humanity is at war with an alien race designated as the BETA. Due to the nature of their foe, mankind has developed Tactical Surface Fighters (TSFs) to better adapt to the battlefields of this new war. However, none of this has ever stopped humanity from engaging in their squabbles against one another.

    To correct a mistake I made that a supporter pointed out: When the Orbital Divers make their descent, I mistakenly said "24 km/h"....that's supposed to be 24,000 km/h.
    And, a few discrepancies between the sources I wanted to note...
    In the Codex, the IJN Ookuma is the carrier on which the Valkyries embark before the operation. It is an Osumi-class transport. In the anime, they simplified it by just saying they boarded the IJN Osumi. I went with the anime just to not confuse between the medium which may have been more commonly seen.
    There are 13 Valkyries in the anime, where the distraction was done by Valkyrie 11. I went with the canon 12 Valkyries.
    The IJN Marines' 19th Tactical Armor Squadron "Salamander", don't appear in the VN or Codex version of the battle. They appear in the Codex elsewhere on a list, as well as in TDA, where they banter with Lilia while storming the beach. The anime added a single line of dialogue during the Echo landing which went "This is Salamander 1, Ryotsu City has been secured" and I figured since they were going in with all the cameos and references by that point in s2, it made sense for it to be the same squadron.
    The anime, codex and vn depict a certain bratty, whiny teenager. But we, after countless hours of poring through Japanese census records, could find no evidence that a Shirogane Takeru served in the IJF or UN military. We have to work on evidence here, because if we don't, I might as well say the UN were pulling people from another dimension to help them out or something. And THAT would be ridiculous!

    • @daishomaru7682
      @daishomaru7682 Год назад +4

      Where did you get the source that Iowa, Kentucky, and all the American Battleships fought in Sado?
      Also, to be fair to your analysis, if I remember, the VN also said that the Valkyries departed off the Oosumi. At least the 1.0 (original 2007 release) and Ameterasu Translation did (The Pre-Official subtitles).
      Also, technically, the Japanese Census DOES say that there was a Shirogane Takeru, but according to IRG reports and Lieutenant Tsukuyomi, he's deceased. And everyone knows that Tsukuyomi is trustworthy because she's a best girl.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Год назад +1

      @@daishomaru7682 The American battleships are listed in the codex, when it details the forces which participated. I was unsure if they were on lend-lease or were American sailors, but Takeru specifically notes that Echo is made up of the US Navy (when Yuuko tells him the XG-70b might've been sabotaged).
      Good point with the Oosumi, I think I recall there is a snippet of dialogue as the Valkyries are launching that comes from an "Osumi Operator"
      Yeah Tsukuyomi and Yoroi Sakon found out he died in 1998. I was just saying no Shirogane was ever found to have served in the military.

    • @azantyr
      @azantyr 10 месяцев назад +3

      A bit late maybe, yet still wanted to mention that you actually did the right thing putting Salamanders there. Because they WERE in the novel. At the moment of Echo unit moving out (Valkyries taking off from the TSF carrier, to be more specific). There are no subtitles for it, but, listening closely, you can hear that exact phrase being said in Japanese: "This is Salamander 1, Ryotsu City has been secured". And the HQ answering them as well. So the anime just copied from the VN, not added a cameo.

      Just so know, All these knowledge and traits are all comes from pop culture and entertainment. Which is something people from earth who are invaded by Beta do not have that. They all got canceled because people all are spending budget in the military.

    So after toying with the idea for 6 months now; I am finally writing down my plans to create a table top miniature ruleset that uses 6mm (1/285) brigade level games; thus meaning a division should take up 6-10 stands for tanks with artillery (that is oddly missing) and SPAA as well as for the TSF regiments, a third stand equalling to a squadron and a full base is a Battalion and a regiment will have 2-3 Battalions.
    A typical BETA Herd will be 3-5k strong, split between 1 base of Heavy Laser, 1-2 bases of Fort, 1-2 bases of Destroyer, 3-4 bases of Grappler and 6-8 bases of Tank class.
    Game mechanics are still being thought out but game testing could begin as early as next month.

    The German army of world war 1 is shaking its head in shame at their terrible lack of ammunition supply and artillery density, you can always have more and it’s an existential threat. If you can’t fire a few hundred thousand shells in 30 minutes and still have enough to remodel anything that looks kind of sus for the duration of operations you are doing it wrong.
    The stingray and salamander TSFs are pretty baller though that’s what they need, not better maneuverability or more swords, they need more gun. Vore-monsters can’t eat you if everything between you and them is lead, fire and overpressure.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  8 месяцев назад +1

      It's true, they needed more and they needed those supply ships moving back and forth from the very beginning. It seems like they only thought to initiate a supply run once their stores became questionable. Huge mistake on their part imo. That being said, I think this part of the frontline is relatively weak in terms of production when compared to the US. That's why they emphasize swords, because they already know running out of ammo is the norm and their government won't agree to expend all munitions on one operation. Plus, the follow up operation is worldwide, and Japan wanted to have supplies for that one too. So yeah they were being stingy to the troops on the ground.

      If they can get the nukes past the laser species, even then it'd irradiate the battlefield and the ground they're trying to reclaim. The BETA don't care about that, but the humans can't recapture land they can't use or will have trouble fortifying. So nukes were used a lot at the start in China and once when the BETA landed in Canada, but eventually fallout kept becoming an issue. In orbit, nukes are still used by satellite systems, which intercept landing hives. In one timeline, these nukes have been used on Earth twice -- once against the US-Japan alliance, and once against a BETA hive.

    Yes, another video from our Muv Luv overlord. Seriously, you are probably the only one covering this universe in such detail. I do have some things that I want to point out though.
    First, the Mogami. The wiki classifies her as a Heavy cruiser, while the codex classifies her as a Large cruiser. Yes there is a difference. Heavy cruisers don't have guns bigger than 8 inch. Large cruisers had larger guns. The Alaska had 12 inch guns, the B-65 had 12.2 inch and the Kronstadt class, classified as a Heavy cruiser by the Soviets and a battlecruiser by others (large cruisers are sometimes called battlecruisers), had *checks the wiki* 15 inch guns...................WAIT WHAT!!!!
    Second, where the F*CK are the missile launchers of the A-6 placed? Are they on the submarine? Why are they added as armament of the TSA? Are they on the Intruder itself? Where?
    Finally, is there a reason why Shirogane is not mentioned by name? Is it because of him being a causality conductor? His actions are remembered, but not his name kind of thing?
    Other than that, great video, can't wait to see more.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Год назад +4

      Thanks for the ship clarification! I'm certainly not a Navy man myself, so all I know is "little/big boat with guns" or "big boat with planes" or "underwater boat" lol
      The A-6 has those two big cannons hanging over its shoulders, but I've never seen how missiles are fired from the thing. Maybe the shoulder cannons can be swapped in some way to launch them? We could use a short story following an A-6 pilot.
      Yeah Takeru doesn't "exist" to the narrator/historian. Only Yuuko and Kasumi remember him. That's why I said the Valkyries were all female.

    • @ladikthrawn7078
      @ladikthrawn7078 Год назад +1

      @@yamamotomechbattles The thing is that both the codex and wiki talk about the missile launchers as part of the A-6. But then there is the question what is the A-6? Is it just the mech or is it both the mech and the submarine?
      If it is just the mech, and the missile launchers are on the sub, why mentione it as part of the TSAs armament?
      If it is both, why is it not mentioned in either sources?
      I'll try to look into it. I'll tell you what I find.

      @yamamotomechbattles  Год назад +2

      @@ladikthrawn7078 Please do, that'd be great to know. All I ever knew was that the Swordfish-Class submarine often surfaced behind the landing point to fire the missiles, but I think the vessel would be separate from the A-6 itself because it has its own crew and everything.

    • @ladikthrawn7078
      @ladikthrawn7078 Год назад +2

      @@yamamotomechbattles So, I didn't find any definitive placement of the missile launchers, but I do have some theories. Definitelly doesn't help the fact that the wiki does not list the source of their inforation.
      What I found:
      1) the A-6 does have missile launchers, NORMALLY. This comes from the interview about the mech design in the codex. I thought that they were optional, like on the A-12, but no.
      2) they are supposed to work like push up pencils. The missile is ejected and then the propelant is ignited.
      This means that there are two possible places on the TSA where they can be placed.
      One is on the hands, the place where there are three four-sided covers on the top and bottom of the arm. One is for launching, the other is for loading. I think.
      The second is on the sides of the arms and the top of the shoulder arms. There are long parts on there that look like they could be pushed outwards, allowing to launch the missile.
      I wanted to make video about the A-6 and the placement of the launchers pretty much halted any progres on writing the script. So this helps me a little.
      Also, I noticed the small pause after the North Americana. It's hard not to pronounce the names of the companies on our Earth, rather than the Muv luv ones right

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Год назад +2

      @@ladikthrawn7078 Yeah that was what I imagined. Maybe something like an internal weapons bay, some sort of door or lift opens, and the missile can launch. It'd be the only way to design a launcher on something that's meant to be streamlined for underwater movement.
      Lol yep those names get me every time! No mentions of Boening in this video, but I'll probably have to say it when I get back around to covering TE 😂

    No esperaba que hablaras tan pronto de la Operación 21 especialmente por todo el contexto llegado a este punto y como la propia historia de la operación
    Un tema que podrías hablar a futuro en tus videos seria la batalla defensiva de la invasión de Niigata del 11 de Noviembre y las diferencias, como transcurrió y las consecuencia de este tanto en Unlimited como en Alternative
    Una cosa mas, hubo otra invasión a Niigata en el 2001 y fue en Febrero aunque es solo mencionada porque no tiene tanta información como la de Noviembre el cual Shirogane fue testigo
    Por lo que entendí, dado como estaba creciendo la Colmena 21 de Fase 4 a Fase 5 sus túneles subterráneos al seguir expandiéndose iba a terminar justo debajo de las mismas líneas defensivas lo cual permitiría fácilmente a los BETA atravesar en futuras invasiones
    Por ultimo, interesante eso que dijiste que la oleada inesperado que apareció de BETA que ataco a las fuerzas de infiltración de la ONU provino de una BETA clase Carrier
    De eso, en que te vasas que fue desplegado en esa batalla?
    Por lo que recuerdo, su primera aparición en Alternative fue durante el asalto con la Colmena Original Kashgar

      The two different Niigata invasions would be a great idea. Once I start to do Unlimited battle records, I could discuss the two difference versions between Alternative and Unlimited. It'll probably be after I've exhausted most of Alternative's currently available battles.
      Yeah the Carrier-Class was first visually seen during the Kashgar infiltration. But one of the pilots -- I think it was Yoroi -- noted how the seismic waveform signature was the same reading which had been detected at Yokohama and Sadogashima. The Orbital Divers also note how the BETA were somehow able to quickly digging upwards (like an elevator) at a speed which they believed impossible. In my opinion, I think Carrier-san came over from the mainland, digging a tunnel under the Sea of Japan -- this tunnel also allowed tens of thousands to just follow right behind him on their way to Sado.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Год назад +5

      I think we rely a lot on indirect fire and airpower. Once the BETA neutralize those with lasers, it'd be a war of attrition on the ground. Our best bet would be to set up defensive lines at rivers and lakes, with good crossfire all around...but it'd take the BETA breaking through several of those before we whittled down and neutralized a group or herd.
      I don't think we have as efficient a logistics infrastructure or the resupply techniques to be able to sustain a head on war against the BETA either. We'd be expending much more than we ever have in the last few wars. Otherwise, tanks are known to be very effective until they get caught by the enemy.
      Our standard infantry loadout would benefit from everyone being a weapons platoon/section. Anyone carrying a rifle, would at the very least have a 40mm grenade launcher. Light infantry in Muv-Luv never did this, but the mechanized, power-suit wearing infantry all came with heavy weapons attached.
      TSFs are purpose-built to rush into BETA herds and wipe out Laser-Class. Once they do that, humanity's real advantages of air and arty can be brought into play. So for us, we're kind of screwed.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Год назад +2

      @@soulcrossinc3089 Hmmm good question. There's not a lot that was done incompetently by anyone. But I'll try to answer off the top of my head. Given that the decisions can only be made after where the video ends...
      1. After the Susanoo begins firing, they could've had TSFs from Whiskey and whatever Echo TSFs are at Ryotsu detach and link up with A-01. I know secrecy is why they were operating alone, but these units could at least position along the flanks to reinforce it. We already knew the BETA were focusing on it, and Ozawa in the anime already considered the 999th Penal Battalion perfect to use for that kind of mission.
      2. Leave more Valkyries to defend the Susanoo, rather than just Kashiwagi (who was sent away anyway). The team led by Hayase sent to clear the way would've probably only needed Tama, Yoroi, Hayase, Kei, and Chizuru (well-balanced team of vanguards, long-ranged, and a gunsweeper). Munakata, Kazama, and Akane would've been a good defensive team to stay and defend the Susanoo. Takeru, Kashiwagi, and Meiya would stay the same as the escort force. But once they link up with Hayase, she and Kashiwagi can turn around to go back and join the Captain's defenders while the newbies escape. There's a good chance they could've set off the self-destruct and all made it away together.
      3. Perhaps instead of trying to activate the auto-pilot, Isumi should've just attempted the self-destruct once the former option proved impossible. It would've saved her team some time because of all the switching back and forth between back-up plans. That way they'd have to fend off less BETA, and could then rush to make the evacuation from the blast in time. I don't know if she would've been able to time when the Rutherford Field activates, but this assumes she can give herself enough time to rush out into her TSF, board, and fly away as the Rutherford Field turns on over time.
      All in all, it's pretty hard. I can only really add my input based on hindsight. But I do think Isumi was trying really hard to ensure all of her squadron survived so they wouldn't be sacrificed then and there, and THAT led to her and Kashiwagi not having enough support. Otherwise, all the units behaved competently and believably, simply doing what little they could by that point.

      They have moderate effects. The only reason North America was never invaded was because when a Hive touched down in Canada, they went ahead and launched several nukes where it landed, rendering a good portion of Canada too irradiated to inhabit but getting rid of it. Nukes are also used in orbit against future landing attempts. It's actually noted in the VN where the MC thinks about how they refuse to use nukes on Eurasia because they only kill BETA on the surface and will irradiate the land they hope to reclaim, and yet they will liberally use heavy metal clouds and depleted uranium rounds despite those being harmful to the environment as well.

      Good question lol
      In terms of anime, I started with the Total Eclipse spin-off series. I enjoyed it a lot, knew what I was getting out of it and what I wasn't. The first two episodes sets up the world perfectly. For the rest, there was a lot of good action and I liked the dynamic between the MC and all the people he was meeting. It's a good story about growth, but sadly, it stops halfway and you have to play the VN to get the whole story.
      Schwarzesmarken is another anime adapted from a spin-off story. It's kind of a prequel, and might require a bit more knowledge about the lore. So it might be better to watch it after Total Eclipse so the setting kind of makes sense. It starts off bleak but is rather masterful in how it gets you to hope the good guys win. It's the only Muv Luv anime adaptation to tell a story from start to finish, which is kind of a big deal to me because I hate when stories I love just get dropped or cancelled.
      But to get into Muv-Luv and really understand it, you should start with the visual novel: "Muv Luv". It's on Steam and goes on sale plenty of times. Muv Luv covers the first two parts of the trilogy: Extra (part 1) and Unlimited (part 2). The sequel to those is Alternative (part 3), and it can be found on Steam as "Muv Luv Alternative". The newest anime only adapts the Alternative part, so it's very confusing to start watching from there, but you might get a good sense of the TSFs in action if you watch it.

    But that would make it logical and booring.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Год назад +1

      That would be the capsules of the orbital divers. Once the TSFs are separated from them, the capsules speed on ahead and crash into the landing zone, creating openings in the ground so that hives can be better infiltrated. But as for larger orbital weapons, the frontline nations are trying to recapture territory, so obliterating Eurasia does not achieve their objectives. Rods of god were used on the moon, I believe, but they created massive clouds of moon dust that only gave unkilled waves of BETA better concealment against ground troops...so they focused less on using them by the time Earth was invaded.
      They do already have nuke-laden satellites which intercept new BETA hives from landing, and while those nukes can be used on Earth, they are kept focusing outward because nobody wants to irradiate the Earth to win the war.
      The logical approach is heavily considered, hence things like the G-Bomb doctrine, but there are always drawbacks to every plan...it's kind of a huge point in the series. There are good and bad consequences with each decision made.
