That's the tragedy of the battle between Kratos and Hercules. Kratos has made it clear that he wants to end Zeus and the other Olympians, but he makes a conscious decision to try to reason with Hercules. In the end, Kratos is forced to kill another family member he didn't want to kill.

While you were being crowned the God of War I was sent to find an apple. He called them Labours. Ha. Well, perhaps he did allow me to kill the Nemean Lion but he made your name known amongst the people. A fierce warrior. A killer made hero. A man made a God. But this time brother, this time I will destroy you. Call it my thirteenth and final labour. Soon I will become the new God of War and claim the throne for myself. Kratos: You aspire to be an Olympian, yet their reign is ending. Hercules: We'll see.
Friendly reminder that when Hercules body surfaces in the sewer, you hear his final death sound so he pretty much felt the pain of his face being ripped and crushed.
Kratos and Hercules are so similar that if you really think about it Hercules is the ONLY Member of Kratos' Family that the Ghost of Sparta understands the Most by Sharing the same Pain,Hate,and Suffering that each of them could have ended up the Same Different Circumstances they ended up by,in many ways you feel sorry for Hercules like Kratos,but like many Gods the Titan's Madness turn him into a Blind Monster full of Envy and died by the Ghost of Sparta's Hands and his Weapons,a even More Tragic Tale but for Fans of the Franchise he will never be Forgotten by the Important and Weight he brought.
I really wish Hercules could have been an ally to Kratos rather than an enemy. It's rare Kratos (within the Greek era) actually tries to avoid/talk his way out of a fight and reason with in Hercules case. But like always, his foes never heed and forces the Ghost of Sparta's hands.
I feel because this was after losing his brother and Hercules being another demi God maybe he would be able to get through to him but like the end said all of them were corrupted by the evils
I do love how much Hercules and Kratos are tied together because so many of the stories of Hercules seemed to be used as inspiration for the origins and ultimate fate of Kratos for the original God of War. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if the creators used Hercules as a frame to mold Kratos because so many similarities are there. Also in God of War 2 we see many other heros and characters from Greek Mythology Theseus slayer of the Minator, Jason leader of the Argonauts, and Percious slayer of Medusa. These heroes rival Hercules in fame and deeds yet fail where Kratos or Hercules would have succeeded. It's not until the final game that we finally meet Kratos's counterpart and easily beat him but not before seeing the son of Zeus show similar feats of strength to Kratos.
Fun fact: Hercules was Kratos' true inspiration in the games. Of course, Kratos from the Greek myths was too, but the character building that kratos has today was a vision of the story of Hercules, who is certainly one of the best gods in the Greek world, just like Hades.

In my opinion, I know this is gonna be off topic, but wouldn't it be interesting for the Amazon Queen, Hippolyta to be some secret boss instead of some recurring boss? Cause her name is mentioned in this video, and I had been interested in the Greek mythology of Amazon warriors.
I think when it comes to potential he truly was the strongest. He was apperanetly only a demigod as of GoW3 and hadnt ascended to being the god of strength like in the myths. Kratos had just barely found out Zeus was his father but when Hercules confronts him they call eachother Brother as if they'd known they were family for years, another thing the developers missed was Perseus was also a son of Zeus but Kratos doesnt acknowledge him as a brother when they meet in the game
Hercules is a hero and inspiring charector as despite being son of God he chose to stay human i don't know why in some games and movie he is shown killed by bad charectors like kratos for revenge and end scene of thor love and thunder..... when I was young my father used to tell stories of Hercules that inspired me a lot even the Hercules movie by rock....
Read of Hercules walking the earth as a man 300 years before the time of the war of Troy, Hector and Achilles. It was Hercules who placed the first King Priam as the King of Troy, after Hercules had murdered the real King. Perhaps Achilles was a descendent of Hercules and Kratos a descendent of Achilles? Death to the old ways!
To me this felt so anticlimactic to see what they did with this version of hercules, for him being such a legendary figure. I understand the idea behind it story wise within the game, but everything from its simpleton looking brutish design to being yet another punching bag to kratos just didn’t do him any justice in the slightest. Hercules (or Heracles) in many ways just embodies what kratos is, and this is the kind of character you would have rather seen saved for a future game and done right, or been able to play as a support or secondary character even. Such a waste in my opinion.

I agree but most people don't even know there's a different way to say his name. I feel like all the media, shows, ect portraying him with the Roman pronunciation has made people only aware of that way to say his name.
