I wish this show didn't drop all at once, because if we were able to sit with each episode for a whole week, I feel like they would be less complaints about the show "not moving". Like episode 3 takes place over an entire month, but you can just hop into the next episode immediately and not even realize how much time has passed. If we didn't get a new episode for a whole week, we could process that extent of time in the episode a little easier.
The labor episode is focusing on the healing of Sugar & mom's relationship. Leaving the birth out of it highlighted that point & subverted a predictable birthing scene like we've seen before in many shows.
I really loved you guys explanation of the Chef Terry and Chef Fields paths. It gave me a better understanding of what was happening. Ciero could always sell the property and get his money back. Well that's what they said in S1 and S2.
Stand by what i said last week. I liked that they tried something totally different more lethargic, i think people’s expectations really got in the way here. Again it wasn’t perfect but people completely dumping on it has made me like it more. Don’t conflate pushing plot forward with good tv
I find we have a shortage of TV content, and then when we have good quality stuff, people have unrealistic expectations and crap on it. I'm all for critiquing tv but not just bashing it.
Thanks for reviewing The Bear. It's definitely one of TV's best series (including season 3), and your style of reviewing is perfect for this show. I agree that this season was different than the previous two, but it needed to be. Once Carmine changed the restaurant from sandwiches to nouvelle cuisine, everyone running it had to change as well. Let's hope for season 4 that Carmine doesn't turn into the tyrannical d-bag like McHale's character, or that Sydney makes the mistake of working for Shapiro. Look forward to your reviews of Slow Horses season 4.
Outside of the fact that as many have said they'd have been better off calling is Season 3 Part 1. There are some real issues with the season overall. 1. Why exactly is this other Chef offering Sidney the Crown Jewels in his new venture? The Beef/Bear is like her first real cheffing job. This is a guy who has worked with and knows some of the best chefs in the world and whose colleagues, people who he has worked with daily are all excellent Chefs with proven track records, many of whom are going to be looking for new positions? On paper it might make for good drama in a 'will she won't she' manner, but it feels terribly contrived and just doesn't pass the sniff test of believability. Sadly a trait that runs throughout much of the season. 2. The timeframe for Carmy to apologise, and for Claire to have not moved on expired after about 6 days tops. I just didn't buy it that she'd be anything other than 'Fuck that dude and the horse he rode in on' after he failed to materialise. 3. Matty Matterson isn't either half as charming or half as funny as he thinks he is, and his presence through out the series is a liability rather than an asset because he can't act for shit versus talk in the same whiny ballless voice constantly, that is up there with nails down a chalk board when it comes to irritating. On top of which Carmy's worrying about the arrangement of his forks, but thinks nothing of the fact that he's got a guy who even when he is suited up looks like he's an office walk-in from Better Call Saul in front of house. I get it that as a producer on the show he wanted a role, but back of house would of made a lot more sense. 4. Chef Terry somehow ending up last Sidneys new apartment and partying with the Bear Crew just felt like an absurdist indulgence on the writers part, given she has little or no reason to hang with them versus any of the other people who turned up to see her restaurant off and whom she likely had much deeper bonds with, especially her own Staff. She has pretty much zero relationship with anyone from the Bear outside of Carmy. A bit like the fact that as you say she blew Richie a kiss, was frankly dumb. A guy she met once and spent a week working in her restaurant. They could have had her swing by the Bear one day and it would have made much more sense. They're trying to build up relationships for practical strangers whose foundations are sand.
TW: Mikey I don't think committed suicide so that Carmey got the restaurant, but it does show that Mikey was not impulsive, he carefully planned out his suicide over a longer period time, but not sure we know why?

Everybody is a critic these days

U guys should cover industry. New season has been epic so far
Heard it’s been great. Putting “Industry” on my list to watch next.

I didn't see Season 3 as a place holder at all, I thought it moved the overall story and personal charcter arcs along quite well.

take a week off, Ross. We don't want you to start giving Barrett a list with non-negotiables..
THE COOK IS FUCKED!
