I did a couple of days work experience on Brookside. On the first day in the morning we were shooting scenes in Jimmy’s house. Then in the afternoon I sat with the director in the control room/gallery which was in the house on the far right as you enter the close. The director would call the shots from there via headsets. Downstairs was costume and makeup. The house on the left of this was the canteen. The houses did have electricity but if my memory is correct an industrial electrical supply and technical cabling was routed to the houses for television production equipment and would have been removed to domestic use to meet local authority regulations when the set was sold. The walls upstairs were fake wardrobe doors so they could be opened to provide crew and equipment with more space. Technical equipment was stored in the garages. On the second day I worked on the set for the swimming/leisure centre, parade and garage which is the same place where they shot and still shoot Hollyoaks. Brookside was unique compared to other soaps where a multi camera studio method would be used - Brookside however was shot on mostly single camera like films and so some scenes would be repeated for each camera angle. There is an in-depth hour long behind the scenes video uploaded on RUclips which shows much of what I mentioned 👍

I’ve put a similar comment about the houses lol as this guy didn’t realize they was actually just a housing estate he thought they where built just for brookside and didn’t have electricity

I enjoyed watching this video. I've always been a big Brookside fan. I always remember one of my favorite storylines back in 1989. I was 12 at the time. There was a joyriding storyline when Sammy Rogers was in the car with some lads. They got chased by the police and they crashed. A couple of the lads were killed including the driver. Well, I'd actually went joyriding about 2 weeks before that episode. I was in a car with older lads. We didn't crash but the episode made me NEVER want to get into a car with any scallys ever again! It actually put the shits up me. Even to this day, I'm careful who I get into a car with... And it's all thanks to that storyline... Amazing!!

    Fantastic video. Thank you 👍🏻
I have always wanted to visit, way before it returned to our screens. I finally managed to go this Easter and was very surprised like you how small the close was in comparison to how it looks on TV. Thoroughly enjoying the re-runs.
I know some folk feel that it would be annoying for the people that now reside there to have ‘tourists’ visiting but when you live in Brookside Close then it’s to be expected! I can’t see any harm caused in the content of your video so the residents can continue their day as usual, you’re not disturbing them or invading anyone’s space. I was grateful of the video. When I visited I’d got two teenagers with me who didn’t want to get out of the car. They didn’t understand what all the fuss was about! I didn’t get to walk around, a couple of photos and I was gone! Thank you for sharing.

So iconic and not like any other SOAP❗
Brookside pushed the Boundaries. Phil Redmond was a great writer, writing scripts ahead of time.
1982 -2003 twenty one years of a talented cast of Actors and superb scripts all that you want from a Soap❗
Although now I feel the Soaps have had there day. They have lost the reality of modern day reality Life.
Thank you for your video and taking viewers of Brookside down memory Lane 👍

I remember back at the beginning of this century driving for a company called HSS. They used to hire things like glasses and chairs, things like that. I had a delivery of glasses to "Brooky" and had to drop them at the bungalow. Got to go inside and was surprised by how open plan the place was. Took my Mrs to see the close a few moths ago. Even though we only live 5 to 10 mins away, she never knew where it was, or just how close it was to ours.

But I don't think I would want to live there though-not with all the goings on that there were in the series of old of course so then too! But it is interesting as others have said too, that the set is much smaller really than it seemed on screen too. An optical illusion I wonder really? Anyway of course, as we know, this is where it was set when on Channel 4 of old from 1982 to 2003 then at the time too. Well done!

@G2E Media I worked there a few times when it was still being used for filming and I can confirm there was electricity supplied to the house's or at least there was power to the canteens which where in some of the house's. It was at the end of the day just a posh housing estate when built that was part of Mersey Television properties who also had Childwall College grounds and properties after it closed as a College. Both sites were taken over by Lime Studios as far as I know until Brookie was totally shut down for filming 🎥 and sold off. Bloody Sad seeing our Scouse talent going to waste. Around 98 I went to the Algarve with my mates we met a camera/boom operator on the set off Brookside he also worked on Hollyoaks. I kept in touch with him for a few years I'm from Wakefield.he invited a few off us over and took us on a Saturday afternoon when set was closed. The very first house which was mentioned it was make up.was the Cunningham's house from Hollyoaks, he told the House which was the canteen was also make up etc. I went in Max Farnham's house Mick's bungalow , Corkhills , I remember every house had a hole in the brickwork for the camera cables, Max Farnham's bedroom the fitted wardrobes were a decider to another room to make easier for filming. Neil the camera took me to the ginnel on the estate at the other end which was about 5 miles away was the Petrol station Grants restaurant etc, Grants restaurant was above the college in Hollyoaks and Petrol station on the same site, the Pub the Frog in the pond was also in the college which if I remember rightly Phil Redmond bought an old School in Liverpool which was made into a studio but was also the college, enjoyed it , I do remember the security on the gate and Neil having permission , all the cars were in the drive Mick's XR3I Max's gold Rover 800 etc.

I remember our friends who lived in Liverpool drove us past it. Like the Coranation Street set, it was very small. At one time, I was a huge Corrie fan, and like brookside, I was left disappointed by the size. Channel four should bring it back in the form on a doc soap using the Residents of Brookside.

The bungalow is also one of the famous ones too it had a fire and the houses wasn’t built for brookside it was built as an actual housing estate and Phil Redmond decided to buy them when they was being built before any had sold as he had the vision for this soap and it wasn’t originally gonna be called brookside they had real electricity and running water and you could have just moved in them there and then but then when the soap finished the reason they had to renovate them when they sold them was because they had to remove all the tv and filming equipment and replace walls where they had removed them to make secret cupboards where they would hide cameras and sound equipment they had camera plugs built in the walls for recording and some wardrobe where false so camera crew could hide whilst filming

What was the most *most* surprising about seeing *Brookside Close* now is that you no longer can see Sheila Grant's famous arched net curtains hung on the bedroom windows at house number 5! Which seems so odd. It's all louvered, roman or venetian blinds!
