Used to love Brookie. My favourite soap at the time. Me and an old pal used to watch it religiously and talk about the characters and where the storylines might head. Funny really thinking about it... Two 18 year old lads who went drinking and clubbing together on the pull every weekend but yet still found time to watch Brookie and chat for ages about it. Can't imagine my son doing anything like that!

I very well remember this very episode. The character who played Rodney's brother-in-law was later sacked from the show because he wouldn't agree to say some line. I think it was during this scene.
Literally two days after I turned 9 years old! 1988 alone was the year Margaret Thatcher brought in Clause 28, better known as Section 28 which led to a group of lesbian activists storming the Six O'Clock News on BBC ONE. Of course, Britain was very much a different place and homophobic articles about people who were either homosexual (or perceived to be as such) would of been in the gutter press and employers could even sack such people on the spot! Thankfully, it's a much better place now and homophobia is in a minority. Back on topic, Brookside was definitely ground-breaking and didn't (usually) border on the far-fetched side of things sister soap Hollyoaks (especially since around the back end of the 1990s onwards) often does as well as other soaps!
In a lot of ways it is better but in other ways there is still a long way to go. I'm an autistic transwoman and was subjected to a 10-year hate campaign that was transphobic and ableist in nature for trying to get reasonable adjustments. A lot of transphobia uses recycled arguments homophobes used in the 1980's. Don't get me wrong, I do think there is generally less homophobia than there used to be and I think there will be some people for whom things are easier now, I just feel there is a belief that it's all good now but there is still a lot more to be done. That said I do think that a lot of people see the past through rose-tinted glasses and I think classic soap scenes like this remind people of the reality of bygone eras and that it wasn't always as rosy as a lot of people would like to believe. Brookside was very much ahead of its time, it was never afraid to tackle hard-hitting and controversial issues.
