- This was such a perfect day to get out and dig, 68 and sunny is hard to beat!
We headed up Saddle Mountain, in central Washington, to dig petrified wood and we had some wonderful finds!
Late last summer the area burned and since then, it seems the road has gotten a lot worse, no longer can you take a normal car to the top of Saddle Mountain, you need to have something like a truck, SUV, or a Subaru.

crazy that youve got from
Thank you! Really I don't think about it much, I just kinda have my head down as I plug away at it! :)
I really appreciate the time lapse of the drive in. Gives me an idea of whether or not my car can handle the road. It made it through glass butte without any trouble, so this looks easy enough.
Hello CR, I made the trip to Saddle Mountain yesterday, March 10, 2021. It was my first rockhounding adventure outside of a 70 mile radius from my house. Everything went well except I'm not sure I was at site B, or, the spot where you were- if that is site B. I had doubts when I got to my location, but there were so many holes that had been refilled I thought if it isn't site B then it must be site A. I'm just hoping it wasn't on private land. When I got home I double checked by watching yours and Vug Meister's videos and referenced my location off the two radio towers in the background. All I know is I'm pretty sure I wasn't at the same spot you guys were at. All I had was a printed Google map and the Gem Trails book, no cell phone or GPS. I refilled all my holes which were pretty small. I filled one 5 gallon bucket with mostly pretty small pieces. I'm thinking I didn't get any of the good stuff that I might have gotten if I were in the right spot, but I love it all nonetheless and plan to tumble every last bit of it. Thanks.
That's great to hear that you made it up there. I plan on doing an overnight trip out there soon and really showing the area off a lot more now that I have a drone, I think a view from the sky can really explain the lay out.
Wow it's like every town had a satellite mountain! I thought you where in Arizona's satellite mountain! I live in New Mexico where, we also have a satellite and sattleback mountains. Really cool how they are all places you can Get petrified wood and agates!
I actually went to that spot today! It had a few inches of snow that made it interesting. My son liked sliding while I dug out the hole.
That's awesome! Get anything good?
@@CurrentlyRockhounding yeah, the main spot you highlighted was basically backfilled in. I grabbed my pickaxe and dug it back out finding nice smaller pieces. I never found the log though.
Hello Mike and CRH, I would like to go to Saddle mountain this month, how much snow is up there? It's a long drive from Oly so I want to make sure I can get there first. Thanks so much for any info.
@@1sec2midnight Snow conditions change often but as of yesterday it was clear. You need to check for the day you want to go up.
@@1sec2midnight There was no snow as of last Saturday (2/6). It was a beautiful day and I left behind a huge chunk.
Thanks for posting the wonderful day out at Saddle Mountain! Appreciate you taking the time to take and share with all the rest of us hounders! Looked like you found some really nice specimens for cutting/polishing! Hope you have a great rest of your week~
Oh yeah! It was good. Have you been able to get out at all?
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Yeah, a couple times outside of work....been to the Nehalem twice now but thinking about making the trek up to Saddle Mountain after watching your and Vug's video's. Heck, it's only 4 hours 20 minutes drive up there from my house! haha It's a day trip, maybe I should head up Sunday? haha
@@BackcountrywithShaughn You should go! it's a little over a 3 hour drive for me.
Lots of people must be digging for the really big stuff. Nice of them to leave the beautiful little pieces for you! It's hard to believe the amount of material there. Interesting to find it without the wearing down and rounding from a creek or river. Thanks for taking us on your very scenic adventure!
Some of these pits are years and years old. Saddle Mountain is great for petrified wood since its sandwiched between two layers of basalt that has been fractured by uplift, that along with the dry climate means its pretty much in perfect condition. Thanks for watching.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Interesting info, thank you!
LOL, "Take it home. TAKE EVERYTHING!" :D
It's universal rockhound advice!
Haha I was thinking it and then he said it 😂🤘some awesome material! Going to try some white vinegar to clean up some pieces I’ve got too 👍
i love finding petrified wood. It is usually brown and not agatetized. It is tumbled from the river.I am going to do a finding petrified wood video soon. take care and thanks for taking me along.
That's how most of the petrified wood is that I find as well. Ill be looking forward to your video.
Thanks for watching everyone!
I would take any and all those 'discards' love it all! Thanks for sharing!
Yeah it's nice to find a spot with unlimited good material.
I was out hunting for arrowheads today but I rather be digging for pet wood. I can't believe how much is there and it was some nice stuff to. Thanks for showing us the views to it looks so beautiful out there.
It's an endless supply. Did you have any luck at finding arrowheads?
High iron content in some of the material, especially the deeper black material. My favorite was the limb cast found in 10 inches or less below the surface.
I'll keep that in mind, thank you.
This place goes on my bucket list for sure. Thank you for the info!
It's well worth it!
Pet wood is cool. I notice you call it opalized...I've heard others call it agatized. I think it looks like opal!
Thanks for letting me come along for the ride, cool place, nice haul :)
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Can’t wait to check out Saddle Mountain. Just bought a slab saw and picked up a few pieces from the sale that looked liked they came from that area
Very cool, I hope they turn out well for you.
I love the blue in the pieces you found
Yeah its pretty when you can find it.
Thanks for sharing. I can almost smell the sagebrush from here. I miss it.
It sure is a sweet smell!
Wow, what a great haul of petwood! Glad you could get out. :)
Yeah it was a perfect day to be out.
Beautiful finds! I dug in Wyoming where there was supposed to be blue pet wood. Someone had come in with a backhoe and tore the whole area up and I did not find one piece. A little greed goes a long way. Your so good with your cameras work too. Keep it up! Havagudun my friend.
Dang, that sucks about someone going in and ripping up that area with a backhoe. We always try to not take more then we will use. Thanks for the come camera work complement, really what I want to get at some point here is a drone, seeing some areas from the ground really doesn't do it justice. Take care.
Petrified wood is my absolute favorite, Awsome video 👍👍👍, we dont have it laying around like that where I live in south dakota so I have to actually hunt for it, but I dont mind hunting for it is half the fun and gets me out of the house
Thanks for watching! We have it all over here in the streams and creeks but the Saddle Mountain area shown here has it in extreme abundance.
I am fascinated by petrified wood. I found a few pieces so far in western WA, but nothing opalized. I hope to make it to Saddle mountain and pick up some of the really beautiful discarded ones. Another great video, thanks so much for sharing.
Amazing stuff. Man. We are loving our finds
It's a great spot, maybe next time we can time it better and head up about the same time.
59,👍 thumbs up!!
Those small multi-colored rocks.
If you could cut them they would make a nice pendant.
You ever make jewelry with your rocks?
Thanks for sharing I look forward to hear from you by 4 now 🎇
I have never made jewellery but I would like to try it someday.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding those multicolored Stones were about the right size for a pendant look really cool.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding ... Thanks for getting back to me 👍
Wow, awesome collection of PW. Thanks for getting us out of the house and taking us along. I really like the limb casts and the knot that looks like a bowl. Hope the pup will be okay. Carpet, not really good for belly. Maybe she’s antsy from being quarantined. How’s the garden coming along?
Yeah we had a good haul. I also love the limb casts and knots, it's really neat to see chunks that are like a proper piece of wood. Laika is doing much better now and the garden is starting to take a little bit, it's still really early for us here.
Currently Rockhounding I forget. It’s already up in the 80’s here. Very soon will be so hot 🥵 I won’t want to go in garden.
thats it, you guys box all them pieces up and let me know the shipping cost!! that is a beautiful area you guys are in, that is part of the treasure!
I plan on going back to this area in the spring and picking up some really good material to share around with people.
11:50 I think I discarded that piece at that pit 😂 I wanted full limbs
Well thank you then! :)
Pit #1 is it!
It's pretty good and if you want to clear that overhang you could have some huge chunks, that's where I got my 70 lb chunk from.
Made 2 trips there in February...brought home about 3 five gallon buckets full. More than I know what to do with...lol.
Nice! You gotta start cutting and tumbling!
@@CurrentlyRockhounding have done some smaller pieces. 24 hrs in the 18lb vibratory with no grit, just ceramic media...gets all the crust off...then cut each end of limb cast with 7 inch tile saw and polish the ends to 3000 with wet polisher. Stunning in my opinion.
Only 500 pieces to go...lol.
Ok,..I'm confused..I clicked on your site thinking it was saddle Mt. Arizona!..where fire agates are all over the ground to pick up..I watched an episode on utube (agate Dad)..I didn't realize Washington had a similar area, but yours is just as awesome!!..pet wood is freaking amazing!!..good job!..and I found another utube channel to sub to!! thanks!
BTW..you do any other rock hounding?? agates? Others?..
Yeah both Arizona and Washington have rockhounding sites called Saddle Mt. I have heard of the fire agates down there and I have also watched AgateDads videos and I dig them. We do all kinds of rockhounding in the Pacific Northwest and Rockies, got to my main channel and check it out.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding I most certainly will!!.. look forward to seeing what you find..I live on lake Michigan in Michigan so we mainly find Petoskey and a variety of others. Unakite, agates, great Jasper specimens..I'm planning a few trips out west next year, one being Arizona for fire...then onto Montana...rocks are a drug!!.. highly addictive!!
Love your videos! Quick question- is this dig site on public or private land? Just don't wanna get in trouble when digging!
It is all public lands out here.
its coming up at sentinel mountain not saddle mountain...please help
What exactly do you need help with?
Hey, so I have 4 buckets full from saddle yesterday, I dumped 7 gallons of regular white vinegar in them a few hours ago. I am wondering, should I be using the more acidic cleaning vinegar? And is a 24 hr soak about appropriate?
It really just depends on how much calcite is on some of it. The more you got the longer you will need to soak. Vinegar is nice cause it's not really harsh to work with, you might need to soak it longer then 24hours. I would just check on it and see how it's coming along.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Right on, okay. I appreciate you brotha. Happy hounding 🤙
Thank you. Feel free to reach out via email if you need more help.
So I’m up here at saddle mountain right now. How do u get to the road to go up towards the mountain
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you but if you want you can shoot me an email at currentlyrockhounding@gmail . com
Looks like you can access the pit in a stand car??
You sure can, just go slow and watch the ruts in the road.
Is Saddle Mountain currently accessible?
It sure is!
Do you have a Facebook account by chance would like to ask you for some info about cleaning
I do but I prefer email. currentlyrockhounding@gmail.com
