This is probably as old as homo sapiens have existed. My belief is that this is hard-wired into us through the pressures of evolution. Us vs. them likely served a useful purpose over many generations for species survival. I don't know that we can overcome this on a scale that matters.

Tribalism has to be acknowledged and channeled appropriately.

So what you are telling me, since the bigger group wins, is that Democracy = tribalism
The trend that would have enabled rational descussion died in '58 when the "post-Existentialism Intelligentsia" adopted Nihilism. How could one even hope to have rational discussion in such a cultural miasma? Even treating Existentialism seriously after that was being behind the curve
Why that even resonates with me so much is that I witnessed its manifestation and figured out what it was all about: Endarkenment; turning OUT the light, which I envisioned literally

Your first sentence in the description: Tribalism creates a vicious circle in which groups resort to mass demonstrations to get their way politically, leading to a breakdown in rational discussion.
I think politics leads to tribalism. We have two giant tribes in America who are warring with one another over oppressions real and/or contrived. The perceived level of oppression is becoming a fevered pitch. But there is truth somewhere between two distorted perceptions. Just don't look for truth coming from the leaders of either tribe.

Nonsense. Being a tribe doesn't mean you loose rationality.
But that is part of many humans / sheople. Regardless if they are in a tribe or not.

If I love my children more than I love your children I'm a triablist according to these two. And leaders of an organization that is obsessively devoted to Israel (an explicitly tribalist nation) are the last people to judge others for their supposed "tribalism."
