For those who don't know the band or the song, it's telling the story of the town of Wittenoom in Western Australia, that was a town specifically built to mine asbestos, which was 'deadly blue asbestos' which the company knew, but kept secret just how deadly blue asbestos dust/fibers are. Many people who lived/worked in the town died of asbestosis. The town was demolished, including all in roads and removed from all maps, to keep the tourists away, who we're looking for 'pretty rocks', which are everywhere in that area. - Most of Midnight Oils music have either a political, environmental or cultural story behind them. Lead singer Peter Garrett takes those subjects very seriously and entered parliament to practice what he preached. It's one of the main reasons we've been such a progressive country on saving our environment for future generations. Peter Garrett I salute you cobber 🙏🦘
@@karenb4816 Dad was a brickie/builder, so we would travel from town to town during winter, and dad cleaned up during the 60s/70s/80s coz tradies were hard to get in regional WA back then, as you probably know, so we would go that way every second year on our way up to Derby. We had friends in Wittenoom, so would stop for a cuppa .... it was the gorgeous rainbow rocks from the gorges that I was referring to hon. Some of the prettiest multicoloured (when cut n polished) rainbow rocks I've ever seen were from that area....I hope your health is ok, and you have escaped the lurgy

Just last year an Australian friend of mine was going to see them in their local area near Sydney and took out his phone and streamed the whole show live for me, I'm in Ohio. they are just as great as ever. A great presence of not just them but their lyrics as well.
The "blue" refers to blue asbestos, and the "sugar refining company" refers to the Colonial Sugar Refining Company Ltd, the owner of that mine and it was mined between 1947 and 1966. Peace out.

Mate these guys put on some brilliant live shows, Rob Hirst alway defied logic with an intense lengthy drum solo. First saw them in 1984 when I was 14 at the Hordern Pavilion Sydney with Macinations and the first all Aboriginal band to make it, The Coloured Stone's. Australian's would be familiar with a cover of their original hit 'Black boy, black girl. The colour of your skin is your pride and joy'. I left that concert for the first time feeling proud of the colour of my skin and put me on the path to learning the history of my ancestors (Yuin, Dharawal. South coast NSW & Illawarra NSW). Thanks mate.
Brilliant band and song, politically, socially and environmentally motivated had heaps of hits in Australia and a few in the USA. Iconic performance outside the headquarters of Exon in NY.
Mate I realise you're reacting on a purely instinctive, musical experience. But those of us with local knowledge know that this is not just a song. It's not just a performance. This is a protest. This is a powerful document. (I'll step down from my soapbox now.)

Most of Midnight Oils' songs have a political/protest element to them which may not be immediately apparent to people from other countries. Keep up the good work, and keep fighting the good fight. If you want to hear a great harmonica player you should check out a live performance of Bluesette by Toots Thielemans. This was a good song about an important subject. The company John’s Manville destroyed many towns in the US with fiberglass manufacturing. Manville, NJ was named for the company and that’s where my wife was raised from a young age. Countless cases of asbestosis in that town and many families destroyed.
Literally a band of my childhood, teenage hood and adult life...... their political stance resonated with me my whole life....... and I pulled up to a red light in Sydney one day, looked over and saw Peter Garrett.... lmfao...... my friends and I did Peter Garrett dancing at discos because 'why not'?????

Not the greatest recording imo. Lacks the intensity of the studio version. This is a Classic Australian song and band. The 2018 live album “Armistice Day” contains a better performance of the song. However, the pinnacle of live Australian music is the concert video “Oils on the Water” from the 80s. That’s Midnight Oil on absolute fire performing on a small island in Sydney Harbour. Iconic.
My dad was a deputy shire president for the shire of Ashburton and he had a meeting with the premier of Western Australia Richard court and he told to shut down the blue asbestos mining town of Wittenoom gorge and I meet Peter garret at last Wittenoom gorge races in august 1989 and the federal government decided to kick out last residents out of the old abandoned town of Wittenoom and its now world's biggest contamination zone within boundaries of Wittenoom and karijini national Park

We used to visit Wittenoom yrs ago. The gorges around there are beautiful. We lived about 200km from there. 👍🏼😊😊
