      Good thing to learn. Kenny at Eagle Eye Shooting has videos showing his barrel smithing and if I remember right (but may have been some other gunsmith video) I think some have shown his cutting & threading a blank for a barrel extension, explaining the process. Worth watching here on YT, he's got some interesting gunsmithing videos, usually with end-product footage at the range.

      @@onpsxmember You're welcome. He's got some interesting videos that I've often considered a bolt gun version of Chad's work on YT. He has a fair amount of discussion of what makes a good barrel, how they're made as blanks, how they're chambered, etc. Mostly bolt gun, but he's built semi-autos also.

    EVERY manufacturer can and does have occasional subpar parts slip under the eye of QC before leaving the factory. That's just an outcome of products being manufactured by we fallible humans. What sets one manufacturer apart from some others is how they own up to these problems by not burdening their customers with the fixes, but covering them under warranty. This was a very good video that shows even the more premier companies can generate mistakes. Well done, Chad!! 👍

      As a guy who works in a metallurgical lab in the QC department of my company I can tell you "slips" are very rare and it is management who sends out sloppy products. They have deadlines to meet and orders to fill so they have the power to veto us if they wish.

      Per the TDP, it isn’t supposed to be, but some manufacturers do it. It can cause problems in chamberings with larger diameter cases or even in 5.56 if they drill too deep. It’s best to follow the TDP and apply the correct torque for the extension, and it won’t come off unless someone really doesn’t know what they’re doing and torques the receiver with the barrel mounted in it, instead of isolating the barrel.

    • @jcarne1015

      I thought for many years that the locator pin was seated into the barrel threads. As a matter of fact, I’ve made a few barrels from blanks, and seated the pins.
      I guess I need to disassemble the upper I built recently with a Colt replacement barrel, that has the gas port a little off center, and check the extension torque.

    Wish I sent you my Aero upper - first shot the charging handle smacked me in the nose😅. They tried to blame the Charging handle and said it was “too strong” and I needed a milspec(it was a Radian). Then they said it was the Cerakote- but I have others Cerakote with no issues. Seemed the latch pocket was ok, I swapped all parts to my other rifles upper and had zero issues…after lots of emails they told me to send it in for inspection. 2 months later I called, they had no update on the cause but shipped me a new upper..I got screwed on my matching Cerakote and they didn’t even offer anything, didn’t give me a cause or apologize😑.

      More or less, from a gross movement perspective. But the tolerances between the throat groove (for the pin) and the diameter of the pin can vary, leaving some rotational movement potential. Reaction rods are the tool for the job, so that no stress is put on that pin/groove situation.

    • @SchooloftheAmericanRifle
      @SchooloftheAmericanRifle  Год назад +2

      Heat gun is safer but takes longer. You are not doing anything wrong. I use tools that work faster when possible. As long as you watch the temps and don't go over 275f you'll be fine with a torch.

    • @p47plane
      @p47plane Год назад +3

      I had a BCM upper that, even with liberal application of a heat gun, required generous application of a 2x4 to finally seat. There comes a point when you should be breaking out the calipers and the RMA form instead of the bigger guns.

    • @mattfleming86
      @mattfleming86 Год назад +1

      I'm sure there is a large safety margin there.
      One potential issue is that it is hard to heat something perfectly evenly. Be it a torch or heat gun heating an item up will heat the outside surface and edges/corners faster than the parts closer to the center-even with a material that moves heat as well as aluminium. Your thermometer may read 300 but spots could get much hotter.
      Also if a BE is tight enough to need more heat than that, you might have something out of spec.

    I first learned that barrels were 2 pieces when nitrided barrels got popular, and less detail oriented companies were nitriding both the extension and the barrel, and due to the slick surface of the nitriding (or something) the extensions were loosening from the rest of the barrel.

    • @robotbuster1487
      @robotbuster1487 Год назад

      With my 20 years of production machinist/toolmaker experience, I can give you a term paper length, speculative response to your 3 questions.
      As Chad pointed out, '...gas ports are drilled last...' which makes sense. If I was tasked with the job of drilling the gas port, I need a feature in place, on the barrel, to position the barrel precisely for clamping/holding it still for drilling.
      The best feature would be the correctly headspaced and pinned Barrel Extension,,,using the pin as a locator in my clamping jig
      So YES, the Barrel Extension must/better be installed correctly, and inspected, before its turned over to the guy that drills the gas port.
      (It may be the same guy that installs the B.E., checks headspace, and pins in the B.E. then drills the barrels gas port)
      Usually in a well managed factory, quality control inspectors keep an eye on blueprinted specs being adhered to by the machinists.
      I give a confident Yes, to question of "...would a person have handled it....?
      Its quite possible that a human at the factory just made an honest mistake, maybe newby filling in on that station/dept., etc.
      "Is that a machine controlled operation?"
      CNC's and PLC driven machinery can do a lot, but not everything. Some tasks are better done with manual, non CNC type of equipment.
      Perhaps the drilling of the gas port is somewhat automated
      Maybe theres an old gal that places the barrel in a clamping fixture, presses the Cycle Start button, and the drilling takes place, then she removes the barrel, and repeats the process, all day,,,, all week,, until she dies

    What do you charge to do a complete inspection of an AR-15 replacement barrel and write a report. If you choose not to do it for a fee, can you point to another competent inspection company to do an inspection as you have outlined in your school and on these videos?

    Is the barrel extension like this for just servicing/ease of production or separate heat treatment from the barrel?
    Is it only torqued or is there any sense of using something like rockset on it? Maybe I'm misremembering something about any thread locker or similar would get brittle from heat cycling and mess with the fit.

    Ask the customer if he used a reaction rod to tighten the barrel nut. I've seen them shear index pins and unscrew the extension. Makes sense because he would have taken the gas block off to put the barrel nut on, torqued it down, and then notices the new misalignment

    If you can create a process that large manufacturers can use to significantly reduce the rate of failure or bad parts escaping QC without significantly increasing costs you will make so much money you will be crazy rich. Till then every manufacturer will have some units like this that will make it into customer hands.

    All of my DD rifles have a pinned gas block...? was this barrel/upper assembled by the owner?

    Why wouldn't the barrel extension be a permanently affixed piece? Being screwed on seems to make it a possible fail point as it did here.

    Like anything, things can occasionally be make wrong or out of spec. Most companies honor their warranties. Its only when there are many complaints of bad CS or products that we should avoid. But in cases like this and the Ballistic Advantage barrel, things happen. Has not swayed me away from either as both have a 98% approval rating. Nothing manmade will ever be 100% all the time.

    Anything manufactured will have issues sometimes. That's why quality control is paramount to ensure a product that has an issue or issues is caught and the the manufacturing is stopped until it's root cause is found and remedied.

    Had no idea a barrel had a removal barrel extension...i thought they were all machined as one piece in a barrel...

    Isn't aligning pin on barrel extension supposed to go into barrel material preventing barrel extension to rotate?

    I was under the impression that the indexing pin went through the barrel extension and into the barrel to prevent it from rotating, similar to a pin and weld muzzle device. Are there any barrel manufacturers that do this?

    On a Daniel Defense DDM4 V7, it is over-gassed after ~300-500 rounds of use. Any common things to check out?
