How far-fetched is Trump's plan to buy Greenland? | DW News

  • According to the Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump could be calling on his prior experience as a real estate tycoon. As far back as last spring, Trump has expressed interest in buying Greenland. But as an autonomous Danish territory, Greenland is not for sale. The news has been met with skepticism by many in the US and in Denmark, but it wouldn’t be the first time an American President has purchased territory from another nation. Much of the United States was created that way. So, could Greenland be next? The US has reportedly tried to buy the island before! After World War II, officials secretly offered Denmark 100 million dollars in gold bars. Those plans - of course - went nowhere. But now it seems Trump is interested again. The people of Greenland? Not so much.

If Greenland ever actually became fully independent the USA would engineer a takeover. The US will not tolerate a nation of 65,000 people in control of such a strategic territory especially since it be unable to defend itself and be a target for Russian or Chinese efforts to control the territory. The notion that international law would somehow make it impossible for the USA to take over Greenland is naive, because the USA is the biggest guarantor of international law. If USA decided to ignore them no one could do anything to stop them.

If that were true, then Europe would have ended NATO and become non-aligned, but it's not true. Maybe the more left-wing elements like the Greens feel that way, but most Europeans know that when it comes to economic growth and development as well as respect for sovereignty the evil USA has been great and far more generous than past superpowers. Europeans as a whole have a good sense of realpolitik and judge the USA's actions in that context and not the ideological pure context you seem to think is typical for your fellow Europeans. @@HelleKurstein

Why would it be worth Trillions? And whats that about 'internal economic issues'? By that logic no nation could do anything because EVERYONE is deep in debt. It isn't childish to make a proposal for a piece of strategic important land. The strategic value of Greenland for denmark is mediocre but for the US it is much higher so why shouldn't they at least talk about it? Shouldn't we talk about buying Hongkongs autonomy than? Or what about land leasing for research in Antarctica? Why can't a "Greenland-deal" be a win-win? Just because YOU can't imagine deals like that to happen doesn't mean they don't happen REGULARLY. Ask everyone who makes deals with China... "The new silk-road" or "Empire of dust". There are huge/enormous deals happening all around the world some including vast amounts of land. People who don't try and calling every initiative childish and impossible are the people who stay poor... nothing wrong with being poor, everything wrong with being ignorant.

@@finntinus2719 To answer your long comment,
      1) Greenland's size is more than 20% of the total land area of the US. Almost the size of India. Who would sell such a huge land mass for less than trillions??
      2) This is totally different from invensting in country's infrastructure, economy, people, etc. The intention is more geopolitical than economical.
      3) USA is already the 3rd largest country on earth with realatively modest population. unlike India, China, etc. So there is plenty of land already.
      4) Contrary to your understanding, China hasn't purchased a land in recent history. Hongkong belonged to China before it was colonized by the British. So it was handed over to China later. It was not a purchase. And New Silk road is an inter govermental economic partnership, not what you think.

      1) France sold a piece of land as big as Greenland. It was called the "Louisiana Purchase" (2,144,476 km²), in 1804 for 15 Million US$ (todays worth of ~ 250 Million US$). What about Alaska from Russia (1,518,800 km² for 7,2 Million US$, today ~ 110 Million US$) or the "Adams-Onís Treaty".
      2) It is both geopolitical and economical.
      3) And? What has that got to do with anything? If I can buy a second car I shouldn't because there are people who got not even one? That is....
      4) I never said China purchased land in recent history... Hongkong was leased 1898 by Great Britain and given back 1997. My point was that the people of Hongkong probably aren't happy about that... and that China is grabbing power with other big deals like building the "silk-road" or "the empire of dust" and 'lending' the countries money for that.
      5) You can sell regions full of people. All the purchases mentioned above were done by a democratic government, the US government. To break it down for you, I can buy a house with people in it. Than they will rent from me and have 'to obey my rules'. This goes for grant deals like that too. For example you tell them they can get 10%+ for "their property" and leave or become US-citizens. In Germany this would absolutely possible because of the "for the general public interest"- law and I believe they have that in Denmark too. If they don't like it they could do a "citizens' initiative" but this is all legal and why shouldn't the US ask if it is possible to buy Greenland? They did it after WW2 but 100 Million US$ wasn't enough... What is wrong with probing the waters?

Doesn't technically even need Denmark to sell. Greenland has reserved to right to separate from Denmark. So technically Trump could make a financial offer directly to the citizens of Greenland. Since there's only about 56,000 people in Greenland he could probably get it relatively cheap. So offer 8million dollars to every person in Greenland. Plus keep your property. Plus a lifetime tax exemption. It would cost the United States about 500billlion which is pocket change for us. Now stop and think about it. How many residents of Greenland will ever earn ANYWHERE NEAR 8million dollars in their life time? Oh pretty much none of them will. Wave the correct dollar amount in their face, and those of modest means will vote for their own personal benefit. Money they will NEVER receive if corporation's start mining natural resources. But they absolutely get a piece of the pie if they sell their vote to the United States.😂 Oh it's for sale alright.😁

Offer the people of Greenland 28 billion for the country, with the caveat that they can maintain their current government and administration on the island unchanged; they'd just be a US territory instead of a Danish territory. For us that would be the cost of 2 USS Ford class aircraft carriers in exchange for a permanent presence in the North Atlantic. For them, that's 10 years of GDP for something that would effectively amount to no change in their day to day lives (except they'd be $500,000 per citizen richer). If they were willing to spread out the payments over time, we could probably even go above that amount and it would still make sense. In addition to a massive influx of cash, they'd also gain greater access to US capital markets, finally giving them the investment they need to develop their natural resources, which could further enrich the island and Denmark would no longer have to subsidize them at $700 million/year and we could possibly even negotiate a cash pay or some other favorable deal out to Denmark themselves in addition to what is paid to Greenland.
It really makes sense all the way around, for the US, Greenland, and Denmark. Denmark has no use for Greenland, it's just a drain on their budget, the US does have a strategic use for the island and the capital to further develop it, which Denmark lacks, and the people of Greenland could become a lot richer at relatively little cost to themselves.

I would think to start negotiations at 100b for denmark + 200k for each citizen of greenland would be a more reasonable start to make it an interesting deal for all parties involved. When spending almost a trillion per year on your military, it's not like that is too much for the US to afford.
"not for sale" is nonsense. My car is also not for sale, but if someone comes and offers enough, surely it will be for sale. People are of course not for sale, which is why the deal imo should include paying those 56.000 people enough for them to agree on it.
