How far-fetched is Trump's plan to buy Greenland? | DW News

- According to the Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump could be calling on his prior experience as a real estate tycoon. As far back as last spring, Trump has expressed interest in buying Greenland. But as an autonomous Danish territory, Greenland is not for sale. The news has been met with skepticism by many in the US and in Denmark, but it wouldn’t be the first time an American President has purchased territory from another nation. Much of the United States was created that way. So, could Greenland be next? The US has reportedly tried to buy the island before! After World War II, officials secretly offered Denmark 100 million dollars in gold bars. Those plans - of course - went nowhere. But now it seems Trump is interested again. The people of Greenland? Not so much.

WELL! CHINA does not purchase. CHINA just fills in the ocean and make their own new land.
That area, aka.. South China Sea, the Chinese have been using those islands for stops over in ancient time and it is in their front yard that why they have been building artificial islands there SINCE many of the islands over there being stolen by the Vietnamese and the Filipino.
@@themiddlekingdom9121
Wrong.
China simply steals...just like everything else.
Wait you can buy islands from other nations? Sure, China will double your offer for Greenland. Fair and square
China destroyed all it's history. The new China is 70 years old .
yeah like what they have done in the South China Sea and now they intimidate Philippines & Vietnam fishermen.
If Greenland ever actually became fully independent the USA would engineer a takeover. The US will not tolerate a nation of 65,000 people in control of such a strategic territory especially since it be unable to defend itself and be a target for Russian or Chinese efforts to control the territory. The notion that international law would somehow make it impossible for the USA to take over Greenland is naive, because the USA is the biggest guarantor of international law. If USA decided to ignore them no one could do anything to stop them.
Greenland will never be fully independent especially since they know how desperate the US, China, and Russia is to have it.
Sure. If you totally disregard the people of the land - and all of your allies! US the biggest guarantor of international law? US politics have been very trying to European and other allies! Time and again since WWII US have overstepped the lines of international law! AND common decency! VIETNAM! Persia/Iran - Mosadegh! Shah! Khomeini! - Chile - Allende! Pinochet! Iraq - Sadam Hussein! Etc etc etc!
If that were true, then Europe would have ended NATO and become non-aligned, but it's not true. Maybe the more left-wing elements like the Greens feel that way, but most Europeans know that when it comes to economic growth and development as well as respect for sovereignty the evil USA has been great and far more generous than past superpowers. Europeans as a whole have a good sense of realpolitik and judge the USA's actions in that context and not the ideological pure context you seem to think is typical for your fellow Europeans. @@HelleKurstein
In the 1860s, the US approached the Danes about buying Greenland and Iceland. They said no.
This is not true, the notion was put forward but it was the US congress that said no, not Denmark.

America needs a new frontier. Create a new homestead act for the settlement of Greenland. Free land for all American citizens willing to make their homes there. And if global warming is as bad as many predict, Greenland could become a very prosperous state.
@freaky Friday Americans are not as bad as you think. 80 to 90% of Greenland can be left in its natural pristine state. I'm even willing to give every Greenlander $100,000 to ease the transition. Even if it was for sale, Greenland would costs Trillions to say the least. United States has so many internal economic issues to address before adding more territory. Trump is so childish.
Why would it be worth Trillions? And whats that about 'internal economic issues'? By that logic no nation could do anything because EVERYONE is deep in debt. It isn't childish to make a proposal for a piece of strategic important land. The strategic value of Greenland for denmark is mediocre but for the US it is much higher so why shouldn't they at least talk about it? Shouldn't we talk about buying Hongkongs autonomy than? Or what about land leasing for research in Antarctica? Why can't a "Greenland-deal" be a win-win? Just because YOU can't imagine deals like that to happen doesn't mean they don't happen REGULARLY. Ask everyone who makes deals with China... "The new silk-road" or "Empire of dust". There are huge/enormous deals happening all around the world some including vast amounts of land. People who don't try and calling every initiative childish and impossible are the people who stay poor... nothing wrong with being poor, everything wrong with being ignorant.

@@finntinus2719 To answer your long comment,
1) Greenland's size is more than 20% of the total land area of the US. Almost the size of India. Who would sell such a huge land mass for less than trillions??
2) This is totally different from invensting in country's infrastructure, economy, people, etc. The intention is more geopolitical than economical.
3) USA is already the 3rd largest country on earth with realatively modest population. unlike India, China, etc. So there is plenty of land already.
4) Contrary to your understanding, China hasn't purchased a land in recent history. Hongkong belonged to China before it was colonized by the British. So it was handed over to China later. It was not a purchase. And New Silk road is an inter govermental economic partnership, not what you think.
5) Last but not least, Greenland is not for sale. Unlike back in the days of King's and emperors, you can't sell regions full of people.

1) France sold a piece of land as big as Greenland. It was called the "Louisiana Purchase" (2,144,476 km²), in 1804 for 15 Million US$ (todays worth of ~ 250 Million US$). What about Alaska from Russia (1,518,800 km² for 7,2 Million US$, today ~ 110 Million US$) or the "Adams-Onís Treaty".
2) It is both geopolitical and economical.
3) And? What has that got to do with anything? If I can buy a second car I shouldn't because there are people who got not even one? That is....
4) I never said China purchased land in recent history... Hongkong was leased 1898 by Great Britain and given back 1997. My point was that the people of Hongkong probably aren't happy about that... and that China is grabbing power with other big deals like building the "silk-road" or "the empire of dust" and 'lending' the countries money for that.
5) You can sell regions full of people. All the purchases mentioned above were done by a democratic government, the US government. To break it down for you, I can buy a house with people in it. Than they will rent from me and have 'to obey my rules'. This goes for grant deals like that too. For example you tell them they can get 10%+ for "their property" and leave or become US-citizens. In Germany this would absolutely possible because of the "for the general public interest"- law and I believe they have that in Denmark too. If they don't like it they could do a "citizens' initiative" but this is all legal and why shouldn't the US ask if it is possible to buy Greenland? They did it after WW2 but 100 Million US$ wasn't enough... What is wrong with probing the waters?

This is not going to happen. It's unconstitutional for the Danish government to do. And it would be unimaginable unpopular in both Denmark and Greenland. Not happening. Forget it already.
Greenland is well aware of mining and oil drilling opportunities and to no surprise they want to keep the business themselves
That would be great for the indigenous people there, in 10 years they would be filled with drugs, gangs and guns, really lucky for them to be a Danish territory...
gangs guns and drugs helps build character.
It doesn't matter. Whoever is big powerful and strong will try to takeover.
It is a sensible idea, if you recall the Louisiana Purchase, or "Seward's Folly" of buying Alaska, or the U.S. buying the U.S. Virgin Islands...
I am Danish and yes it would be a sensible idea.
I am sure if it was Obama, Denmark would be happy to sell Greenland.
Offer the people of Greenland 28 billion for the country, with the caveat that they can maintain their current government and administration on the island unchanged; they'd just be a US territory instead of a Danish territory. For us that would be the cost of 2 USS Ford class aircraft carriers in exchange for a permanent presence in the North Atlantic. For them, that's 10 years of GDP for something that would effectively amount to no change in their day to day lives (except they'd be $500,000 per citizen richer). If they were willing to spread out the payments over time, we could probably even go above that amount and it would still make sense. In addition to a massive influx of cash, they'd also gain greater access to US capital markets, finally giving them the investment they need to develop their natural resources, which could further enrich the island and Denmark would no longer have to subsidize them at $700 million/year and we could possibly even negotiate a cash pay or some other favorable deal out to Denmark themselves in addition to what is paid to Greenland.
It really makes sense all the way around, for the US, Greenland, and Denmark. Denmark has no use for Greenland, it's just a drain on their budget, the US does have a strategic use for the island and the capital to further develop it, which Denmark lacks, and the people of Greenland could become a lot richer at relatively little cost to themselves.
Costa Keith but now, they’re thinking they have something more valuable, with climate change, this island will be very important in the future.
Costa Keith - You are absolutely right. But the Danish people became very insulted by Trump's idea. This is because Denmark is a socialist democratic country.
But Denmark used to own Iceland as well. Until suddenly Iceland said they wanted to be independent.
Greenland of course is dependent on all the aid it gets from Denmark. $700 million a year for a population of 57,000 people ha ha ha ha
I am sure if Obama had suggested it, the Danish people would have loved the idea.
It's a culture, it's a people. Yes but it's also land. Land is bought and sold. Happens all the time.

1) The EU is falling apart because of its extreme welfare state and unfettered immigration the same thing that brought down Rome.
2) only 8% of the US economy involves international trade and half of that is just with Canada and Mexico
Hey, Norway here. Would the US be willing to sell Florida? It would be really strategic for us to use as a holiday resort.
DuVrangrGata You have enough money to maybe buy one medium-sized city in Florida.
Hahahahah
It is too far.

@A K and? ... this incident should be reason enough to terminate the american military bases on greenland.
No no no. It is unconstitutional for the Danish government to sell Greenland. It is simply impossible for so many reasons.
BUYING GREENLAND IS A BRILLIANT IDEA AND GREAT INVESTMENT..
No it's not lmao
This proposal to buy Greenland is a lack of respect for Denmark , their countries and their inhabitants
No. I am Danish and I think it would be a sensible idea. Denmark is paying billions in aid to Greenland every year. We are just a small country with 5 million people.
I am sure if it was Obama who suggested it, Denmark would be happy to sell Greenland.
Alaska purchase and Louisiana Purchase worked out very well for USA.
USA can purchase Greenland, and Chinese Tariffs are going to pay for it.
USA cabt purchase it. Even if tje Danish wanted to sell Greenland (wich they dont). The Government of Greenland, wich is basicaly its own country except for a couple of things would never accept.
Once said that. I think the sole idea is hilarious
Angel Fontecha because having your own government stops the USA I wonder if Iraq thought of that lol
yeah chinese tariff paid by americans
@@jasoncarranco1938 china is buidling three nucler icebreakers

I'm American. DON'T DO IT!!!!!!
The US keep military personnel in Greenland, I think once the race for the northern nautical routes begins and by that moment the US-EU relations will have been altered into tensions. As a next turn, the following occupation will be by the US of Greenland.
and that is why we have to have european defense now!
cranberrybe this is what being slowly progressing these days. Germany might take the lead but the UK and the US hinder every bit of action towards the creation of “Pan-Europa-Armee”.
If the EU could establish interconnected defensive systems with Russia, there would be no threat of war in Europe and the only security problem could be some challenges from outside Europe.
The over the poles sea shipping routes
will become more important than the middle east - especially once the drilling for more oil and gas begins and it needs shipped around the world to the chemical refineries.
@@fvo911 I don't want a "pan-european-army" and I will vote only for parties which have "abolish the EU" in their policies. I will never trust a foreigner to die for my country because I would not die for his. I only trust my country-men and of them just the ones who believe in its values. Pan-Europe is an utopian dream which is just the first step to the dystopian future of a one-world-tyranny. I will not have a part in it. Brothers working together as equals in a loose organisation for sure, slaves under elite-rule never. Communism never again.
Erik - We're in a secret war with entities from other worlds and their alien robots. We need Greenland so we can setup particle beam weapons there, so we can shoot down ufos. Our space force consists of anti gravity craft that we back engineered from crashed ufos. Once we developed the craft and had the capability to travel in space and reach them, they started a war with us.
i would say sell us a piece of it like 200 miles for 50 years.
like hong kong?
China can double the offer instantly
How pissed would you be if you were from Greenland
i would move to greenland today if that where to happen
I would be pumped
Actually, they were mostly laughing, like the rest of us.
They should let the Greenlanders vote who they want to go with.
Iceland was also Danish, but they wanted out some 70 years ago.
@@Pippie5555 The Greenlanders decide when to have a referendum - on independence or United States. There's no ''letting them''.

I like how the lands from Mexico. Were never mentioned
Mr. juice the beetle was just about to comment this 💯
Yeah let's make a deal! We will trade Greenland for Texas
I am sure Denmark would like Texas.
Greetings from Denmark
@@Pippie5555 of course, the GDP of Texas is higher than Denmarks.
Yu Wish - I have not checked, but I am sure you are right.
I think Texas is a very nice place. Want to visit.
All that is nice and all but the reality is Greenland dose not want to be apart of the US. So the answer is no the US can not buy Greenland.
uncle donald can actually approve that real estate transaction as well.
Greenland is open for business, but NOT ever for sale. And in the 21st century people have the right to self-determination of their lives and future, so you can not simply buy 57000 people with out their consent.
$ 3,000,000 cash, tax free to every man, woman, and child.
and an equal amount to the Greenland Government funds: $171,000,000,000,000

zoll z they dont have that much power in greenland so who cares
@@Countcho So basically take Greenland by force? That's pretty typical of the US.
Let the Greenlanders have a vote and see which direction they want to go. It should not be Denmark who decides.

We the Dutch want New York back and I am considering cancelling my trip to the city if Trump does not answer my proposal in a positive manner.
Lol good one
Yea show your face to the world America, no country is your enemy but you decide to be their enemies.
Strategically Brilliant!
ABSURD !!!
Yeah that's great. But President Trump, please consider buying Alberta. I believe most Albertans would approve of this.
Everyone has a price for the billion dollar man
Everyone is acting like a totally outlandish idea to buy greenland.
I don't think the idea is that outlandish, but the prices offered (and payed for Alaska) are rediculous.
I would think to start negotiations at 100b for denmark + 200k for each citizen of greenland would be a more reasonable start to make it an interesting deal for all parties involved. When spending almost a trillion per year on your military, it's not like that is too much for the US to afford.
"not for sale" is nonsense. My car is also not for sale, but if someone comes and offers enough, surely it will be for sale. People are of course not for sale, which is why the deal imo should include paying those 56.000 people enough for them to agree on it.
Maybe the US could starting paying rent for the base is has had for decades in Greenland instead. And clean up all the areas there that they have polluted as well!
Great idea. Make them an offer they can’t refuse Trump!
lisa schneider there’s nothing there
lisa Schneider. Not much. It is freezing cold. People don't even want to live there.
The USA should just take Greenland and Canada.
What about all the treaties land theft from the native tribes.
Naaaah that was in the past . Who cares!!

yeah uk will be available at a cheaper price i guess
you can have the uk since they left. greenland is still a part of eu.

I think Hong Kong should be a US Territory. Wouldn't that be intense?
BorsicksChannel Hong Kong is from The British
The_UPS_GUY Yet they raise American flags and sing the American anthem.
People who understand what communism is are the ones who want to be Americans.
The_UPS_GUY Oh and Hong Kong is not British. They belonged to China before Britain came and colonized Hong Kong during their Imperial years. Learn your history.
Denmark is rich they dont need the money
I think we should buy Iceland too and maybe Hong Kong right next to China 😁
Jason Good why don’t you just buy China 🤔
Soccer King
Because China’s land is so polluted it would take a millennia to fix. Plus the people don’t speak English whereas Hong Kong does.
iceland would maybe be a possibility, however, with the u.s. and china being in a fierce trade war, it would never happen with hong kong.
Actually Great Britain own the Hong Kong territory before but once the long term lease expired and when China join the World Trade Organization, they secretly claim the territory. Once Brexit is completed, I think Boris Johnson should pay Hong Kong a visit to resolve this lease expiration lol.
Why not buy all of Europe.
Truthfully, as an American, who voted for Trump just now. Even I thought it was a joke, and I was actually embarrassed as an American.
If I was a Greenlander I would tell Trump to "Sit on it and rotate".
I want a journalist to ask Greenlanders:
"If every Greenlander received a one off $50MILLION payment, would you consider voting in a referendum to sell Greenland to USA?"
Two hundred thao would probably do It.
and the price is 5000000000000000000000000 trillions of dollars HOW about that lol
Make sure you get it up front if Trump is involved.
I like how he brings up melting ice, that's just not true if you know and follow the actual data
Exactly. I had a shock when he said it.
Actually it would be one of the smartest things he would do, comparable to buying Alaska. Large land mass.
He doesn't care about the land he should so new acquisitions seem suspect.
your wrong, he is not the first President that has tried to buy Greenland, pretty sure he is the 4th that has tried it, some say it is for a military base, but thats not true, we already have one there since WW2 when Denmark was invaded by Germany. The USA after the war gave Greenland back to Denmark. At the time it was under USA control through the UN.
Greenland may want to by America, it is for sale right now
Buying Greenland is not about feelings, it's about our north military base on the island and North Pole transit.
Even better.. right on..
Much rather be part of america than china i like breathing too much.
Didn't know that China is thinking of buying Greenland. Any source?
Yeah the native Americans also said its our country and our culture... didnt work out for them.. what your back greenland.
drwillfranklin1 wait so your just saying we should slaughter them and take their land?

Greenland and Denmark would need referenda for this. Greenlanders need only look at their vulnerability to climate change vis a vis the U.S. position. And how little has been done to help Puerto Rico over the years, to see this is not at all in their interest. And no one is even talking about how their healthcare could suffer.
Would be the best thing for Greenland. Security , investments , list goes on and on. This reporting is one sided.
Greenland said no, respect it.
Dana.k.a.bradpitt The Greenlanders dont really want to tend with the flood of Americans. Plus you know America doesn’t really have a good history of respecting treaties with Natives
Do you speak for all greenlanders oh wait your from the state.
I don’t see a problem just pour about it tens of billions of dollars into it offer like $30 billion for it to Denmark And The people of Greenland gave. thousands of dollars snd little more to local businesses And Grant them tax benefits as well
John Doe Do you speak for all Greenlanders Trump was offering
