This palette was ahead of its time. It was misunderstood from the formulation to the color story. Now, you can find similar themes in palettes with grungy greens and mustards. The thought of green with pink was unheard of, but if we bust our handy dandy color wheel, we'll learn they're actually great friends.
I ended up buying this palette last fall at a deep discount from a liquidation store. I lusted after it for so long and you are right, so many palettes play on the same theme. The only shade that didn't seem to stand the test of time is cube, because multi-chromes have come pretty far. I have no regrets.
You are so right. I was Not interested in the color story of the Palette at all when it first came out. But I Just places an order last week bc I have been thinking of it for almost 2 years.
Also, I love eyeshadow tutorials and I will always tune in for some. I appreciate you revisiting old palettes. It’s realistic and brings back the feels we had when we first bought them. I’ll never get tired of revisiting old palettes so if you want, keep ‘em coming! Lol
I love eyeshadow tutorials!! When I watch a makeup video, it’s an eyeshadow tutorial or palette review 95% or the time. I’m kinda bummed they’re not as popular. Please don’t stop making eyeshadow tutorials!!! You’re the last of a dying breed!!!
I vividly remember Wayne Goss getting upset and telling people to STOP purposely destroying the shade Roxy by hammering their brushes into it, just to prove the point that it had kick-back. Plus to stand back from layering 5 shades on top of eachother with this because it is a PIGMENT PALETTE. He thought it to be so unfair to bash ABH, just because the "influencers" themselves did not know how to use it correctly. I cheered him! I always treated Subculture as a one-and-done palette, which works really great. Your looks are absolutely beautiful Alicia, and I will definitely try them out!!
Everyone on YT says eyeshadow tutorials are dead, but I still love watching them . I missed out on the 2017 hoopla with this palette and bought this last fall at TJ Maxx and still havent touched it. So... Thank You Alicia:)
This was unexpected but I'm so here for it! Color story wise I feel like subculture was one of the smartest releases ABH had ever had. For a good 3 years after it released I saw other brands release palettes with color stories that echoed back to subculture. I held off on purchasing it for the longest time due to bad reviews but I ended up loving subculture. I loved the color story. I loved the ratio of mattes to shimmers. I even quite enjoyed the formula. It wasn't perfect but I also like working with loose pigments. I wore this palette everywhere: job interviews, work, dates with friends, the grocery store, etc. I purchased my palette summer 2019 and unfortunately it went off last year. I threw it out last week because couldn't justify keeping it for the sentimental value. I did end up with a backup and your looks have me itching to break it out.
The yellows, mustards, oranges and bronze suit you so well! Thank you for those "sustainable" videos. I'll never get tired of it! We need to be less in consumption.
Natasha’s technique of place the boldest colors first and blend out the edges is definitely the way to go with this palette! I personally only use max three colors per look with Subculture… love these tutorials!!! ❤️
I luv these tutorials, so please keep them coming. Seeing different methods and creative ideas is refreshing and really has been encouraging me to appreciate the paettes I already own and makes me take a breath before going out to buy the latest drop. Thanks for the vid eo!!
Thanks for doing these reviews!! I loved this palette as well as the Prism that came out later that year, maybe closer to the holidays. They were ahead of their time. This makes me long for the good ole ABH days.
A million thanks for this video🙏🏼I can never find a lot of looks w/this pallet because no one used it a lot. Can’t wait to try these looks this week!🥰By the way, I LOVE when RUclipsrs do tutorials using older pallets so keep doing it, doll😘💋
Eye shadow tutorials are my favourite. This series of you looking back at palettes in your collection is great just what I need. I love that you’re doing this. One of my biggest bug bares is buying a palette I have coveted and searching for inspiration and it being years ago - like people have these beautiful eyeshadows and never revisit them after initial review or tutorial. So thank you Alicia! I bought this palette just before my wedding and I loved the colour story.
Would love to see more videos like this, with all these constant releases from brands it can be easy to overlook some of the great palettes we already own xx
Love love LOVE the fact that you still do eyeshadow tutorials, can’t get enough!! Thank you for another great one, you are so talented and I appreciate what you teach. 😍
I love eyeshadow tutorials. Eyeshadow makeup is all I focus on during these times since we wear masks and all that can be seen are the eyes haha So, like many others who adore you, I encourage you to keep these videos coming.
love love love love. all of this. I don't have the $$$ to constantly buy new palettes either. I am learning so much from these videos. please keep them coming!!
Its not the easiest to use when try to get ready in a hurry, but I can never get rid of subculture for the color story alone. So glad to see someone showing it some love! Love these videos!!
Your tutorials are sine qua non. So much information and inspiration! I love the "shop my stash" approach. It spurs me to reexamine my palettes and try new combinations. (And sometimes there's anime!)
Oh! So awesome you did a throwback on ABH Subculture. I love this palette. I always thought some folks just didn’t know how to use the type of shadow formulation in this palette but if they would have figured it out they would have loved it. I agree with you there is technique for using this palette. Love the Subculture color story so much.
I understand I guess that tutorial videos aren't "popular" but the time of massive makeup collecting is OVER! We need to see some inspiration to use these palettes that we bought.
I am glad you picked out this palette. I think there are many of us who just need to watch new looks made of older palettes. Because many of us are not content creators and more than new palette we need an inspiration for using what we already have. So - thank you and keep going!
It's good to see older palettes and find these series very fun to watch. I still use my Subculture a lot; the shadows might not be very blendable but it is such an interesting combination of colours!
Wow, you are taking it back in time! Good for you making us remember, refind, reuse. There are just so many drops now it's really overwhelming. Thank you! 👏👏
I am so over review videos of new products! I have a lovely collection now and I’m not shopping. I do very much enjoy the beauty community on RUclips so videos showing looks with older palettes is exactly what I want! Love this!
I remember grabbing this at TJ Maxx for $20. I think I used it twice. Some of the darker mattes gave me trouble blending and looked patchy, but if I patted them on and didn’t use too many colors, they looked fine. The shimmers were pretty good too. I really loved that color story.
Ah I just love your content. I never feel bombarded or pressure with constant newness…it always feels like we’re friends just chatting about our love for makeup. I really appreciate that, Alicia! ❤️
I have this one and love it because this color story has always always been up my alley, but don't use it much for the muddiness issues. usually I'd stick to using it as a supporting palette, mostly for like outer-v grungy colors for looks incorporating other palettes - that said, this video was super informative in how to use the palette as a stand alone
Love the concept of this video. I feel like my makeup technique has changed so much over time and I've come up with totally new looks revisiting my old palettes
I really enjoyed this video and i love the video concept of revisiting older palettes! It's motivated me into exploring and appreciating the makeup I already have, instead of browsing what's new on the market ~ please continue with the makeup tutorials!
I love you going back to older palettes. I have more eyeshadow than I need, and I love to see love given to older ones. It makes me use them all again.
Thank you oh so much for posting this tutorial Alicia! I have this palette, I see the potential but I'm confused by the color story. This palette gained an unjustly bad rap on RUclips in 2017. As a result it was shelved by many and quickly forgotten. Your expertise in color theory has given me new hope. I'm going to break out mine tomorrow morning and slay! Thanks again! 😘
This palette is just a tough one to use. The mattes perform oddly, either walking all over the lid without permission or simply lifting off the skin all together-never had another like it.
Thanks for this. I love the color story. I actually stumbled across one of these at TJ Maxx and bought it, for the same reasons you pulled it back out. I have more confidence than I did when I bought it the first time. I’m enjoying it this go round so much more.
This is so funny because I LITERALLY just watched your Riviera palette video since its 27 bucks at Beautylish and then this popped up! Love that you are diving back into older palettes! I love seeing you use your new perspective with older palettes especially the "difficult" ones! Thank you!
Thank you Alicia! I always loved and still have my Subculture! 👀 Agree enjoying our existing collection is better than constantly buying more ( unless of course you really want something)
YES I just pulled this out to give it a whirl again. 🙌🏽 I would also like to see more of the Hindash palette. I bought it and it's um... sitting there waiting for me to be inspired. I've been wearing what's easy and doesn't require me to think.
I appreciate your content because you don't encourage mass consumerism. Like, I want to learn how to use what I already have. I love that you're always coming back to what you have and giving us new ideas
Alicia! I’m SO glad you did Subculture!! I’m SO shocked people had such an issue with it because I literally get thee most beautiful eye looks on my dark blue eyes than any of my ND or other palettes!! This palette for me is magic! I think people weren’t using a light hand or the right soft brushes. I never use the brush it came with. You have to pat the mattes on and gently blend. The 2 light shimmer shades are toppers that flatter each matte. Try Roxy as an all over transition shade under mercury. The teals look awesome with electric!! And Edge under the teals as a transition. These just look so gorgeous this is my go to for thee perfect eye looks that rival my Biba palette… That’s how good this palette is for me. I’ve never had a muddy issue because I only use two contrasting shades like light abs dark not 2 darks together.
I have to say I love your reviews, you’re so thorough and I found your channel looking for good reviews of the Melt palettes (and found your reviews, that are m, to me, the best ones around), but I adore the fact that you revisit products that aren’t new anymore! I’m not creative or artistic, and finding your videos gives me a lot to keep in mind when using the products I bought and that no one else is talking about anymore (or never really talked about it beyond a first impression/superficial review). Thank you for all that you do! You’re awesome 💕
I mainly watch RUclips for eyeshadow tutorials so thank you for continuing to do them. I’m also pleased that you pull out the old palettes because while these palettes are old to you and most of your viewers they are still new for me in fact All makeup is still new for me I only started wearing makeup in April 2021. I now have a lot of makeup for instance I have over 100 eyeshadow palettes but everyone of them is less than a year old so most of them I only swatched or used once put it in the drawer and forgotten about ie subculture. Honestly every since I got my hands on my first Natasha Back in October 2021 and Auntie Pat November 2021 my other palettes get no play time, so to be able to come to RUclips and be reminded of a palette that I have and never used is a beautiful thing. As I’ve commented to you before I really appreciate you for taking the time to become knowledgeable about different products and brands and then sharing that knowledge with us, thank you .
I absolutely love you bring all the older palettes back to life! You are awesome 👌 👏 👏👏👏😍😍😍 I don't have this palette, and I so wish that @abh would bring it back ♥️♥️♥️
I am really appreciating the revisit series. I too am wanting to give love to my makeup that isn’t as new. I never bought this palette but still excited to watch. I’m sure i have something similar.
This palette was love at first sight for me, quite a learning curve but once you got it...💕... I still have it and still love it, is the reason why I skipped Safari from ND. Thanks for this video.
I'd love to see such a series where you go back to old palettes. There are so many new eyeshadow palettes nowadays it's getting overwhelming. I also recently stopped buying new makeup, because I have a lot of products that I don't even know what to do with it 😋
It's good to see you demo your older collection. I still have my ABH Modern Renaissance from pre-2017 (I forget exactly when I bought it but it is older than 2017). And I still use it. I have my old, discontinued MAC eyeshadows and blushes from 2015 and 2016 which I still use. I would like to see you demo/give your updated thoughts on more of the older makeup you own, and maybe do a declutter and which ones are still good to use
I appreciate revisiting palettes. So many of us are not constant consumers and I truly value content that helps me appreciate what I already own and maybe see it in a new light or see new ways to use it. Thank you for this!
Thank YOU Alicia for the great content! The only thing that beats taking the mirror plastic off a fresh palette is seeing a palette that's been loved: pans, accidental nail damage, shadow on the outside, fingerprints. I'm here for that kind of love.
It's so refreshing to see a RUclipsr using older palettes, quite frankly I think buying and buying and buying just gets old, it's wasteful, bad for the environment and expensive. So I'm glad you're doing these kind of videos, they will inspire me to draw from my collection more instead of running for the next shiny thing (and I'm guilty of that )
Wow,fabulous blast from the past! I bought mine in 2019 at TJ Maxx and need to use it! Would love ABH added to your revamping series! Loving all of it!
Omg!! I just revisited this palette last week as well. I didn’t purchase this palette in August when it dropped (I got it in December 2017). I don’t know if I got a good batch, but when I used it for the first time in 2020, I absolutely loved it! I think influencers critiqued this palette very harshly. I’ve always had an issue with complaints about powder/kick back. Now this palette did produce a LOT of kick back, BUT it’s not the end of the world lol. I’ve watched people make worse palette work for them. Continue making eyeshadow tuts! I’ll never get tired of them & im happy I came across your channel!
I love this serie visit older palettes, I love mine and want to use them good not to get new ones all the time, cant even aford them…thank you for this so much! Feels good to see this and feel lucky to have what I have.
This palette was ahead of its time. It was misunderstood from the formulation to the color story. Now, you can find similar themes in palettes with grungy greens and mustards. Nature loves green with pink in every pink flower and blossom that blooms on her green stem. ⚘️🌷🌺🌸
Also, I love eyeshadow tutorials and I will always tune in for some. I appreciate you revisiting old palettes. It’s realistic and brings back the feels we had when we first bought them. I’ll never get tired of revisiting old palettes so if you want, keep ‘em coming! Lol
Yass! Love these! 💯
Agree!!
Helps with not wanting to buy more when most of us have MORE then enough palettes to choose from.
Me too 😄
I love eyeshadow tutorials!! When I watch a makeup video, it’s an eyeshadow tutorial or palette review 95% or the time. I’m kinda bummed they’re not as popular. Please don’t stop making eyeshadow tutorials!!! You’re the last of a dying breed!!!
Completely agree!
Me too!! And I’ve gotten more experimental and get so many compliments!

It really separated the "gurus" from the artists.
its still trash. why are yall lying? lmaooo. and Im an artist. there are many palettes Id rather reach for.
@@lacheinc You are entitled to your own oppinion, but why do you have to be so rude? Didn't anyone teach you to communicate in a civilized way?

This!
Thank you so much, Deborah! I appreciate the kind words, and happy to know that this encourages you to use what’s in your collection! 💕🙆🏽♀️
One of my favourite ever palettes , as others have said, unique & ahead of its time .
Thanks for doing these reviews!! I loved this palette as well as the Prism that came out later that year, maybe closer to the holidays. They were ahead of their time. This makes me long for the good ole ABH days.

I never get tired of make up tutorials. I love them! ☺️💕
i love that you go back to older palettes. we also don’t have an unlimited budget so learning more ways to enjoy our older palettes is awesome!
I am glad you picked out this palette. I think there are many of us who just need to watch new looks made of older palettes. Because many of us are not content creators and more than new palette we need an inspiration for using what we already have. So - thank you and keep going!

Alicia, I love your palette tutorials, especially the older palettes that most of us have. Thank you for continuing to inspire us.💖💕💖💕💖💕
You deserve so much more recigition. I am loving going back over past palettes and finding how people work with it
Oh.My.Goodness! Isn’t this fabulous……I don’t own it but what a throwback in the best way 😍
Wow, you are taking it back in time! Good for you making us remember, refind, reuse. There are just so many drops now it's really overwhelming. Thank you! 👏👏
I totally forgot I had it! I need to do more digging around!

Try it again but barely pick up product. It can turn out amazing.
Ah I just love your content. I never feel bombarded or pressure with constant newness…it always feels like we’re friends just chatting about our love for makeup. I really appreciate that, Alicia! ❤️
I’m so happy to hear that, Lindsey! Thank you 💕
I have this one and love it because this color story has always always been up my alley, but don't use it much for the muddiness issues. usually I'd stick to using it as a supporting palette, mostly for like outer-v grungy colors for looks incorporating other palettes - that said, this video was super informative in how to use the palette as a stand alone
Love the concept of this video. I feel like my makeup technique has changed so much over time and I've come up with totally new looks revisiting my old palettes
Heck yes!! Seeing that palette in your thumbnail got me excited 💜 that palette. Well the color story lol. Ok gonna watch and learn.
I love this series! Don't apologize for it. It's one of the best things in BeauTube right now. Thank you! ❤❤❤
Please don't ever stop teaching us you eye skills. I enjoy them so much! You have such a gift!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏼💕
Tutorials are what is missing now a days!! So Alicia keep it coming!!!🤗
I just brought my subculture out yesterday and paired with Jackie aina palette. I loved the look!!! So here for this!
Love that combo!!! 😍
I really enjoyed this video and i love the video concept of revisiting older palettes! It's motivated me into exploring and appreciating the makeup I already have, instead of browsing what's new on the market ~ please continue with the makeup tutorials!
Thank you, Shay!
I love you going back to older palettes. I have more eyeshadow than I need, and I love to see love given to older ones. It makes me use them all again.
Yes, please, eye shadow tutorials! I love that you are revisiting your stash. it motivates me to do the same and inspires ideas. Keep it up!
Sounds good! Thank you, Corinne!
I love eyeshadow tutorials and I am so glad that you do them. Also, its great that you are doing some things we already own. Please keep doing these!
Loved the video. Subculture is still one of my all time favorites, LOVE the color story. I never had an issue with it. ☺️
Same here!😎
Not only are ( your ) eyeshadow tutorials the best most favorite vids ever…I’d tune in just to see the chair roll up intro. You are #1 ❤️🙏🏼🙂
Did you ever consider doing nail polish vids?
Yeeessss 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽holy throw back! I actually ran across that palette in my collection last week and kept her around. Thank you for this.
This palette is just a tough one to use. The mattes perform oddly, either walking all over the lid without permission or simply lifting off the skin all together-never had another like it.
I'm loving you looking back at older palettes & tutorials - its far more sustainable for me too!
I LOVE your "revisiting" series! ❤ It's so refreshing next to the "let's buy all new" crazy content flow going on everywhere
I’m so glad you made this video ! I was about to throw this palette out.,now I will try these looks! 👏 bravo!
Thank you!
I saw that! 🤣 And I was deciding between Riviera and Subculture when planning. That’s too funny!
Thank you Alicia! I always loved and still have my Subculture! 👀 Agree enjoying our existing collection is better than constantly buying more ( unless of course you really want something)
YES I just pulled this out to give it a whirl again. 🙌🏽
I would also like to see more of the Hindash palette. I bought it and it's um... sitting there waiting for me to be inspired. I've been wearing what's easy and doesn't require me to think.
I love this palette. I picked it from Marshall's for$20, but haven't played with it much. Thank you for the great color combo ideas.
I appreciate your content because you don't encourage mass consumerism. Like, I want to learn how to use what I already have. I love that you're always coming back to what you have and giving us new ideas

Finally a palette I have! Lol thank you for revisiting this palette. You had some great tips for us.
Hooray!!!
I’m really enjoying you going back and revisiting older palettes.
I am all for the tutorials. I have a huge collection so this helps me so much!! 😀💜.

Donna!! Thank you for letting me know, and more tutorials to come! That’s what I love doing the most 🥰
That brush that you used with mercury for the very first eye look was absolutely magical! That brush blended that eyeshadow like nobody’s business! 😮
I absolutely love you bring all the older palettes back to life! You are awesome 👌 👏 👏👏👏😍😍😍
I don't have this palette, and I so wish that @abh would bring it back ♥️♥️♥️
I love your tutorials, please make more! Especially with older palettes!
I'm loving the revisit a pallet and creating new looks.
i love that you reuse your palettes and show us different ways to use them too!!
I absolutely love your tutorials on older palettes, please keep ‘em coming lol!!!!
I LOVE YOUR CONTENT. I love that you revisit old palettes. I appreciate the balance you present.
I am really appreciating the revisit series. I too am wanting to give love to my makeup that isn’t as new. I never bought this palette but still excited to watch. I’m sure i have something similar.
I am loving that you are doing this. I also have buying fatigue so i truly appreciate these videos. I am here for it!
I also recently stopped buying new makeup, because I have a lot of products that I don't even know what to do with it 😋
I’m loving your repurposing videos because I’m on a low buy to also save for some tech upgrades.
Thank you, Regina! I’m happy to know that these videos are useful! And agreed: all the newness has got me 😵💫
Thank YOU Alicia for the great content! The only thing that beats taking the mirror plastic off a fresh palette is seeing a palette that's been loved: pans, accidental nail damage, shadow on the outside, fingerprints. I'm here for that kind of love.
I’m so happy that you still do tutorials!
I love the way that you do your eye tutorials. Love the close up tutorials.
Thank you for helping me to go back and used my old makeup, I really appreciated you
Yes! I’ll take mine out and use it
I absolutely love this palette and think it was way ahead of its time.
I love eyeshadow tutorials with things I already have!! It is awesome
It's so refreshing to see a RUclipsr using older palettes, quite frankly I think buying and buying and buying just gets old, it's wasteful, bad for the environment and expensive. So I'm glad you're doing these kind of videos, they will inspire me to draw from my collection more instead of running for the next shiny thing (and I'm guilty of that )
I'm so happy you're doing eyeshadow tutorials and using existing palettes you have!! I miss this type of video sooooo much!!! Thank you, Alicia!!!
Wow,fabulous blast from the past! I bought mine in 2019 at TJ Maxx and need to use it! Would love ABH added to your revamping series! Loving all of it!
11:30 That color Destiny looks great on you as an almost slate neutral. It looks so good you really could have just stopped there!
Oh I’m so here for this blast from the past!!! 😝😝😝😍😍😍
Your tutorials, reviews and all of your content is fantastic Alicia! Thank you for being so incredible Alicia - we love you ❤️

Omg I loved this pallet. Yes it was tough to work with in the beginning, but it was gorgeous once I got the hang of it.
