Ron, impedance (pronounced im-PEE-dance, because it impedes the flow of current) is the sum of DC resistance and AC reactance. Your meter is only measuring the DC resistance part, so you'll typically get around 7ish ohms because you're not measuring the AC reactance part. But the DC resistance is most of the impedance, so your test is perfectly fine. If the speaker coil is open (meter reads OL) or has a bunch of shorted windings from overheating (meter reads only a couple of ohms or dead short) , your DMM will tell you.
By the way, sometimes a speaker reads open because one of the tiny coil wires connected to the terminals has come off, and all you have to do is resolder it. It's always worth checking. If the coil reads open because it melted, then it's time for a new speaker.

Use vinegar and aluminum foil to get rid of the pitting on the chrome "pipes". It works like magic. Just crumple up a wad of foil, dip it in some whiter vinegar and use it to scrub the rust away. Rinse it all off and Bob's your uncle.

The hairy hand thing is another form of "Parkinson's law of triviality". Another example was in the game Battle Chess, the graphic artist knew management always had to change something to justify their jobs, so he gave the queen a pet duck, making sure it was easy to remove. It worked, he just removed the duck and they didn't ask for anything else.

    • @LyonsArcade

Another example from the Wikipedia refers to how management would spend a good 50 minutes deciding what roof material to use for a $350 bike shed at a nuclear power plant but about 5 minutes approving a $10 billion spend on the station.

Funnily enough, on my PCB for this game, which has the Rev A software (SEGA 1997 copyright only), there are periodic audio glitches that happen when you turn off the demo sound. Sometimes the name entry music locks up after the game ends. It happened to me on a real machine though, so maybe it was just the way the game was programmed haha.
Also fun fact: The Japanese version of this game had a different attract music, with vocals instead of the "wah-wah" talk box you would hear blaring across Dave & Buster's.

For the speakers next time find a set of old PC speakers. The Altec Lansings were really pretty nice considering and shielded as well since they were made to be placed near a computer monitor. If you troll the thrift stores you can often find them for pretty cheap. Strip the speaker out and mount it where you need it.

@@LyonsArcade ROFL, I am the same way. I have over 10 computers sitting in my place right now. 3 of them I just got fixed up so someone could use them if needed while all the virus junk was going on. I have my desktop that is running, my wife's laptop that I can't bear to use since she passed, another laptop that I use from time to time for different stuff, my server which is dual Xeon X5690 96GM ram beast and my router which uses dual Xeon L5630's. Not to mention the core i7 tablet someone gave to me and my android phones and tablets. I once mentioned I heated my house with pc Graphics cards this winter, LOL. If I was closer you would probably be calling to see if I had stuff sitting around when it comes to computers. I actually have some computer speakers just sitting here. I also ended up with a point of sale system that was used in a restaurant at one point. Just need to bump the RAM in those and install some SSD's figure the system is worth a hundred or so once it's up and running.

if the amplifier has bad components it could be putting out DC current on the speaker outputs and its not always the main output driver itself .. Components like bad caps or open resistors that manage to impact the amplifier bias would certainly do that.. That issue if bad enough will fry the voice coil in the speakers on the effected channels explaining why the speakers are open .. With no audio signal present there should not be any "dc" voltage present (more then half a volt is bad referenced to ground ) Speakers should only see variable audio signal AC on there terminals .. A amplifier power supply that is not supplying clean DC to amp can also do this.. looks like this game has its own separate power transformer for the audio section, as you know use care with games imported from japan (100 v) as people will update the switching power supply, but not address the separate power to the audio amps or monitor causing them to fail from over voltage stress . as far as DC on the speakers one will often hear a hum as a side effect to this. if its not fixed it will also fry any new speakers you install. an example of this issue ,, ruclips.net/video/-hChkNyf1V8/видео.html

Nicely put! DC voltage on speakers will kill them, depending on voltage and coil resistence (different than speaker impedance). The reasons for an amplifier putting DC voltage on the output are various, depending on amplifier topology. In push-pull circuits, if an output transistor goes short, it will ouput rail voltage directly to the speakers and fry them before a fuse can blow, it happened with me once. It is always a good idea to measure DC voltage on the deffective amplifier to help with diagnosis. Otherwise, there is a risk to damage newly installed speakers. After amp is repaired, it is necessary to measure DC level again to make sure it is under 50 mV or so. There may be pots on circuit to do that or simply the amp circuit is symmetrical and needs no adjustments.

What I always have to do is just buy them on ebay, there's not really a good obsolete IC place that I'm aware of online, if you do buy them on ebay don't buy them from China, you can get them in the US usually or Europe. From time to time the ones you get even domestically will be fake ones the seller bought from China, but if you check their feedback first usually they will have previous complaints if they're sourcing their stuff from China.

Wow this was over a year in the making. Seem's like you're working on a feature film hehe. When you said that both speakers were bad, that normally means one thing: The power amplifier shorted out and blew the speakers. Not a good idea to replace the speakers without repairing the amplifier first hehe.

The resistance climbing or not being stable indicates there is likely a capacitor in the harness across the pot.
Using a 4Ohm speaker instead of an 8 will affect the amplifier in negative way. It is good to order proper speakers.
