I was on South Georgia 1982. HMS ‘The Happy Bec’ Hecate joined us at KEP. Our recce platoon had sailed from Ascension in a chartered freighter St. Helena, manned by crew from that island. We hit a F11 gale just south of Shag Rock and all our perishables were lost (St. Helenian crew were superb). The Happy Hec was diverted to replenish us. Turned out to be a floating off licence!! 😊 The ship stayed until New Year’s Day. We held a brilliant ‘sod’s opera’ on Christmas Eve at the old church by the disused whaling station. Ship’s Company and us (30 men) all put on acts mostly in pairs. One of the best Christmases I ever had.
Wow that stirred the grey matter. I was on that deployment and left FIFE 1986. I was 43 then now 79 unfortunately a lot of us have gone. Really enjoyed the vid. I have a mass of photos if you can use them.
HMS FIfe whilst on this deployment was known to the rest of our group as the Port Stanley Guardship and our Lynx helicopter did buzz Fife while she was holding a Sods Opera while we were covering her patrol in Areas 7 and 8 I was serving in the MIghty Manch at the time.
