I''d like to think that Groot JR is different from Groot Sr. is because JR. was born around humanoids and thus made his body more humanoid. Whereas Groot Sr. didn't meet Rocket until later as an adulthood and therefor lacks socialization and still resembles a tree.. Ie: Drinking from public fountains, eating his own leaves, long lanky body, etc.

But what about the massive groot in the end credits? Assuming this is a couple years later which is likely true, he should’ve probably grown to be an adult groot or show signs of doing so. Instead he is much larger and bearing more similarities to king groot than the 2014 groot. I assume that the original groot was just a groot who was really old and because of the majority of that groot life probably being away from rocket may have been less intelligent and decided to not grow to a larger size in order to travel with rocket around space. The reborn groot spent his whole life with guardians so the different form could make sense if you look at it this way

I'm going to say on behalf of those that feel the same, but dare not say it aloud for fear of the response for saying an unpopular opinion. That being that I cannot f'cking stand Baby Groot. Not so much the saplings, because they don't really do anything and are only on screen for a few minutes. I say "saplings" in plural because the ones from the end of Vol 1 are completely different from the ones from I am Groot. No, it's specifically baby Groot. He went from being a cute character to being insufferable by the third or fourth scene he was in.
My aversion in vol 2 comes from the transparently cynical "meme posing as a character," nature of him. I don't care what Gunn tries to convince everyone that there was any reason to have him in that stage throughout the entire film. The character grows fast, they could have had him like this for that first twenty minutes or so, then jump him up to the teenager we are in the credit scene. And Gunn is utterly shameless in his he seems to make manipulative canonical decisions about him based solely on the reaction that it'll get from the fans.
First, by telling us that the original Groot really died, and this is his offering. And second (and by far the worst of them), that claim that the last thing he said in Infinity war to rocket was "dad." I remember my immediate reaction to that was "bullshit, you just make that up right now because you knew it would get a reaction,, and have people talking about him.
