Hey guys! There’s a few ways you can spool BRAIDED line on a baitcaster. You can tie it through the holes on the spool or use electrical tape. In this case I used backing in this video since I didn’t have a full spool of braid. I hope this helps!!
@@Dat_Van I’ve always threaded the braid through two of the holes on the spool and tied it on to the spool, if that makes sense 😅that way it’s impossible for it to slip
@@Dat_Van if your spool has holes in it tie it thru one or two of them. the line will now actually have something to grab onto thus making the line tighter on the spool and stop slippage. it’s simple physics.
Braided line can also be tied through holes or if you wrap it around twice over a layer of masking tape it’ll also stay put. Key is giving the braid something to hold to. Also you have to spool at about your max drag you plan on using or 1/2-3/4 line strength or you’ll get braid bite
We use this exact technique in tackle shops, try fly line backing instead of mono, mono definitely works but fly line backing is a bit cheaper and really bites into the spool. Plus it last a long time as opposed to mono
if your spool has holes in it tie it thru one of two of them. the line will now actually have something to grab onto thus making the line tighter on the spool and stop slippage. it’s simple physics.
Exactly. I’ve been doing this for 20 years now. Just a tiny strip, I’ve never had a line slip. I’ve had lines backed by Cabelas/BP slip on me, because kids are dumb, and nobody else but kids and retirees work for them (this is because of their awful employee staffing practices and the way they prevent people from working full time, and understaff stores, so nobody can afford to work for them, in Canada at least). A piece of tape people! And give your money to mom and pop tackle shops wherever possible!
electric tape works better than backing since you get more braided on there and with that reel you can tie a good knot to one of those holes like you did the mono and it won’t slip
This is only if your caster doesn’t have holes. Or if your putting line on a spinning real. Good quality reels don’t have this problem only cheaper ones.
We’re did you get the rod and reel I’ve seen it everywhere and want one for myself because I love the way it looks and have heard really good things about it
Braid should always be put on wet and under much more pressure than your fingers can provide. If you put it on loose the first time you catch something decent the line will cut into the line below and bind. Putting on wet via a wet towel removes all the waxes and excess die from manufacturing.
I hate to break it to you but yeah mono filament or CO polymer or Flora carbon or whatever you're using they're using goes on top of the braided Sorry for the misspellings Bixby's probably the worst auto correct voice recognition ever
If you have a small size spool, or don’t want to do a mono backing, or just want to maximize your spool capacity. Use electrical tape! Just do your normal line to spool knot then add a short or decent length of electrical tape over your knot and make the tape flush to your spool and line; and then spool your reel up. Works for me and I have not slipped or had any issues 🎣
Most of our saltwater rods have thick braid as the backing followed by a top shot of mono. I don’t know much about freshwater fishing but I’m pretty sure you’re fine with just braid.
Take the braid wrap it around the spool 5 to 6 times then tie the uni won't slip it's common for hollow core braids in salt water for them to tie directly to the spool with 10 wraps unnecessary step to add backing
Yeah, if you just tie to the spool its gonna slip, thats why there are holes in your spool. Ive been running bait casters with braid for six years now without any slip at all and that's because i learned real fast to tie into the holes.
Unless u need backing to fill up some space you don’t need to use it. The Japanese guys have been using braid and light set ups for decades with shallow spools and they don’t use backing. All you have to do is remove your spool make a big loop and wrap it around your spool three times. It’ll never free spool that way.
You can do that as well I just happen to not have a full spool of braid so I used backing. I appreciate the love and I most definitely appreciate your viewership and comment!!
I’ve been a fishing guide for 10 years and I can tell you that If your braid is slipping on a modern bait caster, you’re spooling it on improperly OR you’re reeling in when the line is too slack. BUT also cheap braid can lead to this type of problem as well.
I don’t fish bait casters or conventional gear in general but on spinning gear backing is useful for when you’re getting spooled, I even use it on braid ready spools because mono does better under extreme resistance due to it being able to stretch, also it’s cost effective as well and it helps with keeping the braid from digging into itself under immense pressure, but I’m sure some fishing gurus on here will say “I’ve been fishing for 60 years and never had that happen with braid” but it’s not like grandpa ever told stories of catching world record fish, well at least none that he can prove lol
Use electrical tape for backing and you won’t have to worry about a weak knot. And use a fg knot way more stronger and closer to the diameter of the main line
Personally I put electrical tape on the spool and then arbor knot my braid to the spool, if a fish runs you out and you’ve got a leader to main line to backing you’ve got too many potential break points
Trust me If ur gonna start fishing and don’t know what to buy just buy Japanese fishing gear it is actually a bit expensive but it’s really good and strong
I have never put backing line before. Got stock on a big tree branch that fell in the water once, i pulled the whole thing out of the water and my line did not slip i do use thick braid tho that’s why it was able to pull it out so that was lucky i guess haha (i have a spool with no holes so it’s just tied around the spool with a uni) maybe it’s just luck or maybe it’s that the thick braided line stays stuck on there nicely when it’s wet but i have never had issues without backing line ao far
I needed this so bad. I am investing in a bait caster right now, but I don’t know how to put line on any real. So I thought I was gonna have to go to a store that would do it for you. Thank you for this
Hold if you tie your braid to this reel it will not slip if you use older models then use electrical tape which stops it from fishing only those who have been doing it for a long time knows.
The backing also help the Braid lay flater on the spool. Slipping doesn't only happen on the spool directly but 1/2 down on the main line in the spool... less Braid on the spool help with that. Even pros state 40-50 years of backing, then main line on a normal baicast spool that holds 110-120 yards of 12lb test.
Never had braided slip and never had "backing" to prevent it. The reels I use have a way to attach the line to the spool, either holes or a little nub to tie to.
I use the mono or floro for my leaders because it is hard for the fish to see and use orange braid as the backing because it is more visible on the water for me to see where my line is.. but to each their own
The line visibility is irrelevant. All colour wavelengths are absorbed by the water, each colour wavelength is absorbed at different depths until only blue goes last (that’s why water is blue and so is the sky). Fish don’t take any notice of the line in the water, it’s just another bit of weed to them.
You don’t have to use backing at all with solid spools or with holes, use your wife/girlfriends or moms fluffy sock and put it around your hand and create so much tension so you can barely reel in your reel and keep on doing that until your spool is full. You shouldn’t be able to stick a finger nail in between the braid and boom non slip braid and it also makes it so flipping and pitching is smooth like butter dude.

@@Dat_Van I’ve always threaded the braid through two of the holes on the spool and tied it on to the spool, if that makes sense 😅that way it’s impossible for it to slip

@@zach9937 not all of them have homes though but that's what I do too if there are holes
Don’t need backing if your spool on your reel has holes just feed the braid thru one or 2 holes will never slip
That works as well! I didn’t have a full spool of braid so I just used backing in this case !
That hole can cut your braid dude and it’s not centered . Just trying to help
Use backing for solid spools….that’s why they started making spools with holes so you can tie your braid straight to the spool so it won’t slip. 👍
Pretty sure it's also there to help the line dry out better when not in use.
@@huntermoore7888multi function by design.
And to reduce the weight of the spool, too!
Its to reduce the weight of the spool. Tying line through the holes is generally a no no.
I’ve always put a small piece of electrical tape to the bottom of the spool doesn’t slip one bit
Braided line can also be tied through holes or if you wrap it around twice over a layer of masking tape it’ll also stay put. Key is giving the braid something to hold to. Also you have to spool at about your max drag you plan on using or 1/2-3/4 line strength or you’ll get braid bite

Yea never tie your line in the holes. The edges of the hole can be sharp sometimes and this can also dmg the spool
@@zerox4231 yeah never had a problem, all the holes are smooth on all of mine. don’t have to worry about damage.
My preferred method to prevent line slipping is adding a small piece of electrical tape over where I tied my line onto the spool

i use silicon tape used for bike grips, it self seals on itself once you do a single layer wrap and never comes off or slips

Dont need that backing because the reel doesnt have a smooth spool it has holes for tying the braid so it doesnt slip👌
You don’t need that much backing about 10 ft is plenty to wrap enough times to prevent braid slip
Yeah, if you just tie to the spool its gonna slip, thats why there are holes in your spool. Ive been running bait casters with braid for six years now without any slip at all and that's because i learned real fast to tie into the holes.
That spool Is clearly braid ready, no need for backing
The albright knot aka ALBERTA KNOT
You also can use electronic tape for backing
I don't use backing just a Arbor knot never had a slip while using braid
That will work as well !!!
Why would you add backing? Tie the braid through the holes on the spool

Use electrical tape for backing and you won’t have to worry about a weak knot. And use a fg knot way more stronger and closer to the diameter of the main line
dc reels dont have holes in the spool
backing isnt only to avoid line slipping but to save your line.
There are knots and ways to use braid without going through holes and without slipping with no need for backing
You don't need that much backing, only needs to wrap the spool 5 ish times
Cool looking reel.
You helped me so much😊
I've never added backing and have never had braid slip. As long as your knot is tight and line is tight when re spooling it'll be fine.
Yeah just use the tiny piece of Tape that comes on the line.I usually cut it in half. One tiny piece and the line will cinch it to the spool.
You can put it thru the holes on the spools
You can do that too!!! A lot of the time I do it it it cuts the braid when you pull it down….
No, don’t do this. The edges of the holes are sharp.
I use mono backing to be economical.
Personally I put electrical tape on the spool and then arbor knot my braid to the spool, if a fish runs you out and you’ve got a leader to main line to backing you’ve got too many potential break points
You don't need backing if you just tension it right.
Never done this on any of my bait casters or conventional reels and the only reels I’ve had line slip on are spinning reels
You can also use double sided tape instead

If ur gonna start fishing and don’t know what to buy just buy Japanese fishing gear it is actually a bit expensive but it’s really good and strong
Ive never had braided line slip before and you dont need backing if theres holes in the spool

Tie your braid directly into the holes. Only time you need backing is if u don’t got holes in your reel.
I don't use backing I use the rubber strip that's around every reel I buy I don't have slipping problems never have
I've caught 20+ pound redfish with braid and no backing or tape
ive never used backing once i just put a little piece of scotch tape
You don't need backing. Put the braid between 2 or 3 of the holes in the reel, it will never slip.
I just started the braid at the bottom
Hold if you tie your braid to this reel it will not slip if you use older models then use electrical tape which stops it from fishing only those who have been doing it for a long time knows.
Or just add braid then use a piece doesnt have to be alot electrical tape around the beginning of spool. Works perfect for me.. or duck tape..
I’ve never had braid slip
If not plastic string and it's like wool then use paper towel If no want to burn fingies
Where you by your bait caster please
You don’t need backing it’s just extra work
How would it slip when you put it through holes
i use the alberta not i just figured out how to do it while tying on leader line and its the best for me
I add some electric tape on the reel then add the braided line. It allows the braid to “bite on” the tape and avoid slippage
The backing also help the Braid lay flater on the spool. Slipping doesn't only happen on the spool directly but 1/2 down on the main line in the spool... less Braid on the spool help with that. I didn’t know braised line was a thing. I love learning new stuff about fishing! Is there a special use for braided line? Is it stronger?
braided line is much stronger and is much thinner than monofilament but it slips and does not stretch
I use the mono or floro for my leaders because it is hard for the fish to see and use orange braid as the backing because it is more visible on the water for me to see where my line is.. but to each their own
I do the opposite braided fully with a mono leader. I like the responsiveness of the braid and the the invisibility of the mono

How do you spool regular line on one?
