      Same! Drummer-turned bass-player who hasn't really played in three decades and realized my guitar skills were utter crap when I started recording again at home for fun. Started learning Miku's part for "Warning!" from the scorebook and yeah there's a lot of power chords but A) there's a few points where I'm like "How do her fingers do that?" and B) even the simple parts have to be locked in to the rest of the band.

    I watched Band-Maid Camp video last year (ruclips.net/video/eNl9LsIquAI/видео.html) . Akane was cooking forever, MISA couldn't get up from bed, Miku was interviewing Akane, and Saiki was sleeping. Miku had to go downstairs to get something but had to be very careful not to disturb Kanami. Kanami was downstairs with her headphones on mixing with her computer like a mad professor laboring away with no regards to the others and what they were into. That moment seeing Kanami dug in deep to her craft stuck with me and every time I listen to a Band-Maid song I picture that moment. Kanami takes all this wonderful talent she is surrounded by and transforms it into a living being one song at a time. Another reason why these girls combined are so special. Like Tony Griffin said in the comments, " 7 minutes of video to explain the first 2 seconds of the song? That's Obi-Wan-Kanami's compositional genius for you"...... Thanks Jack, love your hard work into these....

I don't know how to play the guitar and I'm still amazed at how complex that instrument can be. Making separate videos entirely depends on the time you have. AT 8:17 when you pointed out that the lead guitar extends the previous call-and-response feel between bass and guitar by making the first part of the lead line ascending and the second part descending...that's the kind of perceptiveness that makes your channel a stand-out. I don't know why some folks get irritable about the "how it's made" stuff with hundreds of other reactors already churning out "this is great but _why_ is just a mystery!" content, but if separating it keeps 'em off your back it's a win for everybody.

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 года назад +2

      Very kind of you Steve, glad that made sense! It's usually the simple stuff like that which ends up being the most impactful!
      In all honesty it gives me less to edit in one go and proof watch- if I mess something up on a 30 min video and need to re-export it a few times, that'll end up taking several hours to render it and then re-watch, it it's a wee bit shorter it does really help!
      The other main factor is that from the analytics I can see retention and stuff like that, which suggest a good chunk of folk like the watch through style, whereas others prefer a longer form deep dive. My guess is that it's probably 'better' to try and tackle these separately rather than in one fell swoop! But to be fair I'm taking a bit of a shot in the dark here, so I'll try a few like this and then reassess!

    Amazing analysis! Jack, your comprehension of not only music and guitar but of audio engineering is amazing. Band-Maid fans are so fortunate to have you share with us your wealth of insights. I jotted down a few points from your deep-dive upon which I want to comment:
    The song's opening. Since the day "Without Holding Back" got released, Kanami's guitar jumping from my right ear to left ear, as a Queen guy, that reminded me of Brian May's guitar in "Brighton Rock". And then last week, at the very start of the song, when you mentioned a cool studio production trick with "panning", I thought you were simply referring to moving the sound from one speaker channel to another. I was further convinced that was what you meant tonight when Brian May's name suddenly appeared in a link at the top of your video's screen. I had no idea that what you referred to last week was going to be far more complicated than merely Queen's multi-tracking recording or Brian's using a delay on stage to create repeats during his solo.
    What blows my mind is that you picked up on the frequency filter and complex digital glitching in a couple of seconds during your first listen. I've heard that song hundreds of times, but never noticed that stuff. You immediately identified it, and could explain to us the intricate audio physics involved. Incredible!
    8:40 Asking a question we go up, answer a question we come down. Dude, listen to the singer at 1 minute 17 seconds into that Jewish dance song: ruclips.net/video/ExFpdglWxzY/видео.html He's answering his own questions. You asked me to point out Jewish components of "Without Holding Back", and that sing-songy question/answer is certainly one of them. It's also a Jewy speech thing in general to talk like that, and ask and answer our own questions.
    Also, please keep in mind that as I mentioned in my caption under that dance song video, traditional Jewish singers are almost instruments as they often sing notes as opposed to saying words. So, it's real easy to shift that function from a singer to a guitar. Kanami in essence took over that singer's role. But, she contributes even more Jewish stuff than that during that song, but I'll wait until after you complete the trilogy (?) or entire series of deep dives into "Without Holding Back" before I reveal other Jewish components. And I am loving this weekly-episode format. I would love for an entire 8-part weekly series, and yes, totally want a video on Kanami's tapping during that song.
    9:50 You mentioned using a brick. Rick Rack used cinder blocks: ruclips.net/video/KvRJjC28pKE/видео.html
    14:25 "You can keep going" back and forth up and down the neck. Reminds me of the guitarist in Gordon at 12 minutes 52 seconds into this: ruclips.net/video/5yMMcV3Urps/видео.html
    17:00 You practically played the Jewish part in "Smash" by The Offspring, but you filmed that BEFORE we discussed the topic. Wow! Either "Smash" was already in the back of your mind, or Offspring recorded the most basic common Phrygian scale. Heehee, either way, pretty cool to hear you play that after our conversation.

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 года назад +1

      Well spotted! So, Brian May uses delay with panning- you can have 'mono' delay where it doesn't get moved between the speakers. It's also entirely possible that Band Maid used same trick this as well, but sped up the delay speed as it repeated. My guess is they chopped it up in post production, but it is just a guess!
      That's so interesting! You've just jogged a memory that I'd been told the Dembow rhythm (dancehall style, 'ba-ba-doom-ba') and Scotch Snaps (bagpipes and fiddle doing a jerky jig type of thing) might also have emerged from language or been shaped in some way?
      That's some really cool analysis, totally agree! I've only filmed two of these sadly, might re-visit the song at some point though! Awesome, will keep that in mind.
      Yes! Also cinder blocks are very punk. Nice one.
      Great catch, exact same guitar idea!
      Haha, I didn't even notice that, superb observation dude!

      @@JbfMusicGuitar Thanks for the responses. I'll need to learn about Dembow rhythm and Scotch Snaps. Meanwhile, you mentioned bagpipes. I believe you live in Edinburgh, which is not terribly far from Dunfermline. I gotta tell ya, I attended a Big Country concert in 1984 at the Hollywood Palladium. Incredible show. @@JbfMusicGuitar You wrote that you might re-visit the song at some point, so I get the feeling that you're done with it for now. As such, I'll now share why I consider that song so Jewish.
      Traditional Jewish wedding dance music is played fast, and drums-heavy. Lots of sustained double-kick rolls and triplets, demonstrated by this drummer's footwork: ruclips.net/video/ExFpdglWxzY/видео.html
      Akane's sustained double-kicks highlight "Without Holding Back". That's the first thing that struck me. Then there's MISA. In addition to dancing fast in a circle, Jewish dancing often includes stopping in place to kick each foot. We can get a good look at what MISA is doing starting at 3 minutes into your first video: ruclips.net/video/qLkWtB9m3BA/видео.html
      Watch her slide her left hand back and forth, it's in sync with stopping to kick each foot. This will sound insane, but let me show you what that would look like, as they kick to MISA's slides: ruclips.net/video/MhFfEpr7Uas/видео.html
      Akane and MISA together, just those 2 alone, do enough to get a dance floor hopping. But then we got Kanami on top of them. She uses Jewish scales throughout the entire song, and asks and answers her own questions, just as we hear starting at 1 minute 17 seconds into this video: ruclips.net/video/ExFpdglWxzY/видео.html the vocalist is using a Jewish scale to ask and answer his own questions.
      Then there is her tapping. I believe that she's doing the clarinets and sax, such as what we hear starting at 2 mins 35 seconds into this: ruclips.net/video/ExFpdglWxzY/видео.html
      When we throw it all together and add Miku into the mix, I may sound completely out of my mind, but this is what I see: ruclips.net/video/nh2oNtq53E0/видео.html
      I just wish those dancers would've stopped to kick with MISA's slides. They needed me there to lead them. Heehee. Anyway, yeah, the 4 maids are ready to play chasidic weddings and bar mitzvahs.

      I want to add that in a Jewish orchestra, I could imagine MISA"s slides being played by a slide trombone

    Why don't you just combine both types of reactions into one video? You can have the more laid back reaction first and the more analytical reaction after that. Just explain that in the title and the intro to the video. I'm no musician, so when you break a song down into 5-10 second bits and analyze it, I tend to go numb (no offense). This way, I can just watch the first reaction and the more musically inclined viewers can just skip ahead to the analytical part if they want.

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 года назад +1

      Cheers Bill, yeah it's a wee bit tricky trying to balance all that stuff!
      I might try that at some point, but there are 2 main problems, one is that the longer the video (even just 5-10 mins longer), the more of a pain it is to edit, render, proof and upload. The other thing is that if the retention time for a video isn't very good (for example folk clicking off after an initial react/watch though) it doesn't tend to get suggested as much. It's a bit of a mystery what metrics are the important ones on this platform, but that one does still seem to be quite an important factor!
      Having said that, I'll probably give that a pop at some point and see what happens!

    I am sick of reaction videos.... by people with no talent commenting on musicians with talent. Kanami Tōno is your teacher Mr. Guitar tutor. When you try and play her riff it sounds sad and amateurish.

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 года назад +1

      Ok, luckily I've worked out a simple solution:
      If you see a video which says "Analysis", "Reaction2, or a simiplilar variation, just don't watch it- problem solved.
      Best of luck!
