Joke aside, there could be an element of truth there. Should I remember correctly the two of you first videos, Ryan gives the impression that he is more a spinner ( fast cadence/ low watts output) than, possibly out of necessity, (heavier bike) than you are (as in spinning your crank at a slower cadence but cranking more Watts) ?

I get people doing the west coast, trans am, or the Alaska to Argentina route every year during the summer here. Lots of em! He said Mira was something special, and you were okay too!!
Good stuff John! Of course, a spare belt is the best choice, but Gates needs to come up with a 'quick-link' style of temporary belt repair for exactly your situation or when you can't get a replacement on the road.
Thanks for your comment. I do carry a spare belt and that’s what I installed in the video of course. Speaking with the engineers and just logically the introduction of a link would be weak spot in the system. Maybe you’re referring to something like a patch for an innertube. It’s so rare that caring a spare belt is just an easy thing to do on a long remote ride.
A real bummer about the belt, I hope you can get another couple of spares soon! You are just too powerful John😉Its such a beautiful area to cycle in and having Mira for entertainment makes the tough times so much better😊Awesome video John👍
If I was the belt manufacturer (Gates) I'd be very keen to investigate all failures. It is still a relatively new technology for bikes so Gates need to go the extra mile to give confidence to cyclists. Cars have been using Gates belts for a zillion years but that doesn't reassure cyclists enough. I hope that Gates belts become very popular with cyclists but Gates need to understand & address the failures
It seems to me that in bike packing situations such as the great divide or this one, and on a bicycle in general, that exposure to the elements and the relatively inconsistent stresses on the belt increases the possibilities of damage and fatigue to the belts. Also, they are not designed or manufactured to the same strength standards as those made for cars. Perhaps they will create stronger belts for serious bicycle applications, as opposed to whatever standards they thought would be sufficient for bicycles up to now- probably just commuter bikes.
Hey, thanks for the comment. Yeah I had a spare and I continue to carry spares on a trip like this. It’s really not a big deal as they last much longer than a chain would in the same conditions.
Such a cool adventure. Good thing you are skilled and experienced enough to do your own maintenance. Impressive. Thanks for sharing this with us. Hi Mira 👋
As always sir thanks for the memories and adventure belts and chains break, might be a good idea to carry 2 belts, how expensive are the belts? Would really like to see some more frisbee catching. Be safe be well give mira a chin rub from me. SJ sending my love and prayers always.
We’re all good. The belts last way longer than a chain. It just looks bad since I ride them to failure. If I did that with a chain it would cost a fortune since I would have to replace the other components too. 🤗💕🐕
Coffee & sticks... the most important way to start to any day... I wonder how often you use the drone to scout ahead on the trails you ride - to see the trails, read the signs or find a campsite...
I would guess the higher loads you are pulling and the fact that your belt is longer than say a priority 600 affects the belt life expectancy. If Gates were to design a belt for your specific application it would have to be wider and thicker to achieve longer life... ? Love your travels - and Mira!!
Hey, thanks for your comment. Yes the higher loads definitely make a difference. The same would apply for electric moped. Advantages of a belt drive Carbon belt drives are incredibly hard-wearing and as a result last a very long time. On average, you can expect 15,000 km - 30,000 km out of one belt, while a chain tends to only last up to 5,000 km… ps I haven’t heard of any one getting these number usally 3000 to 7000 max

I just checked a web page and it recommended replacing the gates carbon belt at 4000 Kilometers. You’ve probably got three or four times that. So my initial thought about the soap bar lubricant having a negative effect is not a factor.
I spoke with two engineers from gates, and that distance recommendation is not based upon information from Gates. The load placed on the belt and the conditions. It is ridden and have a much greater effect than just the number of kilometres ridden. It’s so easy just to carry a spare belt and regardless of the number of kilometers. It’s definitely more than I would get using a chain. That’s from my personal experience.

im gonna be honest here. just not sold on this internal drive and belt set up. especially if you run 7 or 8 speed, shimano deraileurs and cassettes r darn cheap and easy to find, with no power loss and ease of replacement. the frame also could be an old stumpjumper or any 90s mtb and would work just fine.

They are very tough. I would have worn out 3 chains with the miles on that belt. It’s very interesting how many others have made assumptions about why it broke and the engineering involved. Even the engineers made these leaps. You’re right that people do embellish a bit. However with the lack of maintenance needed and the length they last for us they are still worth carrying a spare. Not if you ride a high-end system or ride away from major cities. People racing the Tour Divide often carry a second chain since they are hard to find on route.

I have toured 23,000 miles and never had a problem with a chain!! I never used a drop of lube either just a little WD 40 every now and then!! Just saying!! 😎🤘 🇺🇸🌎🚴🇺🇸
@@mswarrior932they’re expensive for sure at around 99us dollars. 25k out of a chain is phenomenal, but with all that riding experience you probably know how to maintain your chains the right way! Also newer chains on modern 1x12 or 2x12 arnt quite as strong as those wider burlier chains found on 3x drivetrains. Like the saying goes they don’t make them like they use to!
@@ian_pedalz so true!! 😎👍
Just order online 🤗💕🐕
Already have a spare for Central American 🤘
Fake the train audio, we'd never know.
Haha ya it blew out the range 🤪
You didn't see Greg McCahon and his riding partner there did you? I think they just rode Copper Canyon too
@gregmcmahon
Not this time. We’re well south of them.
