Kifaru VS EXO | Hunting Backpack Breakdown

- Опубликовано: 25 ноя 2024
- Today I am breaking down the HOODLUM bag from Kifaru. I am going over the Duplex Lite Frame and showing how I customized the system to suit my elk hunting style out west.
If you want more technical answers please reach out to Kifaru International, their customer service is top notch. Also, I have only had exposure to these packs for one elk season, so I am not a proclaimed expert. Prior to running Kifaru I utilized EXO for several seasons.

What's your favorite pack setup right now? And what are you using it for?
Exo 1800...my only addition was after the season I ordered a lid for next year....love that pack
I was running the stone glacier sky 5900 but I had the same sag issue you had with the exo. I went with the hoodlum this year and loved it.
I have a Mystery Ranch Sawtooth 45 that I used in Colorado last month (September).
EMR II and Duplex frame; Guide Lid is a must
Running a kifaru reckoning but been wanting to look at the hoodlum! came out a couple months after I got my reckoning thanks for doing the video man!
Jumped to a 44mag this year from another brand. Agree totally with all you say about frame and versatility of the Kifaru. Added accessories as the year went on to improve even more. Not cheap...well worth the money.
Exo K3 4800 is so light and incredibly comfortable with super heavy loads. I love mine.
I bought the Kifaru reckoning pack with duplex lite frame two years ago. I cannot express how awesome the pack is. The quality is better than anything I have ever used. And I was an Army Ranger and Infantryman for 10 years.
Was running the MR Cabinet. Decided to make the switch and go with the Kifaru Stryker with duplex lite frame. I couldn't believe the difference in fit for me. Perfect for my day elk hunting. Stayed dry inside as well after the Olympic rains soaked all the brush. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing 🤘
Kifaru Hoodlum just showed up! It is HUGE! But I am loving it so far!
Im running a Mystery Ranch Marshall. Tough backpack. Carries everything I need for a multiple day hunt. It has a meat shelf as well. On sale for 300$.
I'm running the Nomad 2 with lid and camp bag this week in Colorado 2nd season. Can't wait!
Good LUCK man! -DS
From what I hear, Aron will work with people to get the best set-up for them.
Outstanding customer service, I've really been looking at the woodsman, I'm only a 2 or 3 day guy, I can't spend 9 days in the backcountry, sounds awesome, just can't do it.
They have amazing customer service. They called me street i ordered mine and changed the frame type and belt size which in turn made for amazing fit while using it. They also worked with me on shipping and enabled me to get my pack the day before i left to hunt. I'm a kifaru guy for life after that.
He does… couldn’t believe it… what other ceo will get on the phone with an end-user for a single sale?
Bro! Thanks for this backpack breakdown video. These are the 2 brands that I'm looking at for 2021. I currently use a Mystery Ranch Sawtooth 45. It's a good pack, but kinda smallish for backcountry hunts. The hip belt on MR is pretty nice. Hopefully the EXO and Kifaru hip belts are just as good...whichever I end up going with.
Looking forward to meeting you at one of your ElkShape Camps in 2021. Keep up the great work, Dan.
Great video. Lots of great packs out there. Appreciate your honesty and you sharing your opinion on this pack.
You bet! -DS
Man backpacks are getting insane making life so much easier 3 miles in woods
word!
This is the shit we need to hear. 100% gracias!!
Thank you for sharing! I’m currently in the market for a new pack n this helped ALOT. Ur awesome, love all ur videos👊🏼
Great demo of the Kifaru HOODLUM! I've been using the KUIU Icon Pro 5200 for the past 5 years and my only complaint is with heavy loads (elk hind quarter) it's hard to get the pack to feel stable. I've heard that's not an issue with Kifaru packs.
Hey Roy, Tim here.. I think the big difference is KIFARU is a pack company and Kuiu is a gear company that makes packs.. I know they make great gear, but definitely lean towards the pack companies for the most solid setup - TC
@@ElkShape that's a great point.
I have two kuiu frames(one newer one older), I am a carbon fanboy; but after 65/70# the kuiu frame just doesn't work out. Their bags are solid, cheaper then kifaru, lighter, more pockets.... I'm buying a kifaru frame and keeping my Kuiu bags.
Meat shelf - that is one way. My tip is to attach it to the upper attachments. Allows weight to now sag as much. Kifaru rocks!
Thanks Kyle! -DS
Thanks for the info!
Had a kifaru and couldn't get it to fit my back just right, previous gen frame. I'm sure an adjustment could be made but I couldn't ever get it right. Between that, the weight of the system, and straps everywhere (OCD) I switched for the moment. Great company and customer service. I'll be back immediately when they make a bag that cleans up some of those things.
Hoping with the new ownership they continue to explore more internal frame packs.
@@1989jumpman who owns it now?
@@outdooroutpost6061 Aron (and partners) own it now. Aron seems more willing to stay up with the times. Love Kifaru, but kinda similar to Toyota in a lot of ways.
Imo no other pack carries weight over distance like Kifaru does. I use them for everything from my edc bag (Urban Zippy) to everything an eastern whitetail guy would need (44 mag on a duplex frame).
sick setup! 🤘
Kifaru has some cool features and seems like a great company, but IMO nothing beats the EXO packs. The last thing I want to be doing while I'm in the field is messing with all these straps, molle and pouches. This looks like getting close to $1k pack after all these add-ons, no?
To each their own. 🤘🏼
@@ElkShape I agree. Hard to beat the EXO bag versatility. Also hard to beat the Kifaru frame. This is why I'm gonna try and figure out how to attach the EXO bag to the duplex frame. win/win
Would it be hard to run a revolver in a holster on the waist belt ? Or maybe the kifaru packs have a built in holster I don’t know about ? Thx
What kind of canopy is that over the back of the Truck @ 1:38? Thanks Guys!!
Running the metcalf rn but already know I wanna give an exo or kifaru a shot and make one a backup or buddy bag
I used the metcalf for about a year but it felt like I had a piece of plywood strapped to my back and it’s pretty much just a big pouch. I got a Kifaru 44 mag and damn this thing blows the metcalf out of the water
What size frame are you running? For reference what is your torso length? Which frame stays are you using?
I’ve been very happy with my Seek Outside Peregrine so far, but nice video on the Kifaru pack! They seem very well made, but just not my style.
Yep - use what works best for you!
-DS
Bro tip to all your followers... it will take about a month for you to get your pack, dont know why but they are lacking in that department getting there product out fast, other then that hands down best pack on the market and tried them all. Top 3
1. Kifaru
2. Initial ascent
3. Exo but to be fair i had the k2 and not the k3
Thanks for the Bro Tip! -DS
What happened to the Stryker???
I was tuning in to hear your thoughts and this was on the hoodlum.
Great pack, of course that is coming from someone who has had 9 different kifaru bags and currently has 4, muskeg, kuthroat, hellcat, and Stryker and many pockets and pouches lids etc
Anyway thanks for the video but brother cut some of those ads out...😬
I picked up two of those Goat knives headed out for whitetail and black bear next week
Take care!
1. I have the Stryker - used it for scouting quite a bit this year, really like it 2. - this video is about the Hoodlum, sorry If you thought different 3. You own a LOT of Kifaru bro 4. - Ads - you can skip them and honestly, it takes a lot of energy/time to make this content 5. I hope you get to put the goat knives to work man! -DS
@@ElkShape
I hear yeah
Just seems like a lot lol
I have a kuiu setup with 2 different ultra bags that i use for everything and i do like them but i wish they were more durable. Kinda wish i did more research because I've been wanting a kifaru for quite a while now but didn't know about them when i got the kuiu stuff. I like snyder as a person and love kifarucast, i want to support them so im sure I will eventually make the switch. There is other gear i need to upgrade first tho lol
You'll get there! It's all good thanks for sharing 🤘
@@ElkShape no worries. Just listened to the latest pod you put out recapping your season, was great man. Yours and eastmans elevated are my favorites hands down. Totally agree with you about the stowaway gourmet, its the best I've ever had. Pro tip, ive been mixing half of their chili with half of an off grid mac n cheese to make a healthy chili mac and that is the bomb.com for me lol. Tried to tell stowaway to come out with chili mac via email but i didn't get a response, would probably sell well in my opinion

@@ElkShape I just registered for the Colorado camp. Thanks. See you there.
It looks nice, it would take some serious trial and error to see what worked best. Almost a daunting task with that many buckles and straps..I have a small butt and my exo seems to slide down. Maybe this would be worth a try
Exo makes shims to increase the back bolster to prevent this
No Washington camps this year? We were going to try and make one :(
Boise is on the Menu.. With Dirk Durham & The Elk Nut.. Hope you can make one!
What would you recommend for a white tail guy? I’m looking for a frame pack that I could carry a stand and sticks or even a deer out if needed.
Kifaru Shape Charge is what I use for November Whitetails! -DS
I ran the EXO K2 5500 the last two seasons and found it fit perfect and carried weight exceptionally well. I disliked the lack of external pockets for quick access to gear. I used the full sized internal dry bag to keep gear dry. I’m thinking of trying the Kifaru next season. How did you handle wet weather with the Kifaru?
I ran an original Blacks Creek Jim Horn edition since 2008. Made the switch to Kifaru (44 mag) and was extremely mad at myself for not switching years ago. While i ended up wth tag soup, I can't get over how incredible the Kifaru worked. As you described the frame fit is unbelievable. As i hammered out the miles chasing and looking for elk the pack fit was incredible. Glad to see someone giving them props. As I'm transitioning into blacktail season I'm excited for the opportunity to finally get some weight on it and feel the fit. Thanks for the video
Thanks for sharing your story 🤘
Elk camp would be awesome
Hope you can make it !
Elk Shape I was trying to look up the info
@@RED2K2TIMMY elkshape.com/pages/elkshape-camp
Did you rattle can your bow? Based...😆
Why didnt you use a lid? It looks like you have made a duplex timberline pack, which is what I use.
Didn’t need a lid but certainly could add that on a backpack expedition hunt. 👍🏼
We need to hangout. I can show you how to clean some of that up
thanks for the annoying background music; really helps
I have a k3 exo and I struggle to have it fit tight to me when loaded. It wants to slide down past my hips onto my butt. I have my waist belt cinched tight! And it doesn’t seem to stay on my lower back. Did you have this issue? I’m considering getting a kiffaru.
Tyler Kline I added one lumbar shim and it fixed the problem...exo sells them
@@davidbuurma9309 thanks I’m going to try that!
Yes I had a similar experience - I believe packs and boots are both very personal decisions, so finding what fits you best is ideal! -DS
Your shoulder straps are not adjusted to your torso. There are adjustments behind the shoulder straps.
not exo vs kifaru. this is a kifaru video only
Hardly a Kifaru vs Exo video. Nice clickbait.
Exactly what I thought, I feel this was nothing close to a comparison video, it was more like “Things I don’t like of Exo, and here it’s a super duper review on the company that endorsed me for this year” even though exo endorsed it for the last few years. Not knocking the hustle, but it was a bias option.
This was designed to bait ya haha - no, I’ve already done Exo vids on the channel...wanted to compare a few things but ultimately go over the system I just used in the elk woods for the last 30+ days AND answer all the FAQ’s on what I thought of Kifaru after using EXO for the previous 4 elk seasons. I got love for EXO.
@@ElkShape think you could fit a exo bag to the kifaru frame? I find my exo frame tends to slip on my hips a bit or sage, but I am not a fan of the kifaru bags. Which is odd as I pretty much love everything they have. Just the bags don't appeal to me and the exo k3-4800 is my go to bag for the moment.
Exo 2000 on K2 frame.
I’m not sure the title of the video was very accurate. You should have just labeled it “why Kifaru is greater than Exo in your opinion-for now”. It seems not long ago you were a cheerleader for Exo. As far as your one complaint cited in the video that the Exo sags under heavy load I found upsizing on the belt size solved that problem. After watching your video I went back and re-watched the Huntin fool pack lineup review and yeah their opinion about stone glacier doesn’t align with yours. Moral of the story is a pack has a lot to do with body types.
Great video! Keep up the great work. If you have a moment you could go visit my page 😎✌️
So I guess you burned your bridge with Exo! Lol
That pack is bigger than you lol just kidding
Haha! Certainly felt like it! -DS
