Thank you for your great advice, Dr Klee. I'm a beginner flutist (have only been playing for seven weeks) but my breathing always sounds like the "asthma flutist". Now I know why! I'm going to practice the diaphragm breathing from today onwards. :-)
There are like 2 mistakes often involved not getting full breaths. 1. Breath technique - muscle memory. 2. Mark your breathing points! Most people just takes the inbreathing at a wrong time.
I love your videos. I have been playing flute for a few years now and I'm really trying to become great on flute and I do realize my breathing is bad and this is helping me so much along with your tone videos. 😭thank you so much
Since elementary until high school... All this time i was doing it right and my classmates did it wrong... Gotta correct my classmates now... Thank you
Try the diaphragm expansion exercise with a 2-3 pound weight. Then play the flute in the same position; very hard and requires more exertion than you are used to. Then stand up and play a long tone middle A. You will notice a huge difference right then.
Is there a particular way or method of deep breathing we can use to cause a relaxation effect turning flute playing into a meditative/relaxing practice by deep breathing in a particular way? The other day I was breathing deeply and slowly and after 10 minutes felt very relaxed but other times I tried it and couldnt get the same effect.
That is an interesting topic. I do know that if the lungs/diaphragm are not relaxed it is very hard to take a full breath when playing the flute. David
Around 4:50--can't make a four ???phrase? You said it several times and I didn't catch what you said. You said they can't make it and it's too slow. That was all I understood. Could you please clarify if you see this? Thank you!
What I meant was that many young flutists don't take a breath properly. They take their breath from their chest and not from their diaphragm which results in a much smaller breath. David
Dr.Klee, I am a beginner flutist, and was wondering about two things. 1. How do I practice to improve my tone quality, and make my flute sound have less air in it, and 2. How do I know when my head joint is in/out enough so that I'm in tune?
Zachary Thomas Hi! As you practice try warming up on long tones-like a Bb scale in whole notes with the metronome set at the quarter note to 60. Also try opening your teeth a little bit more. This may help to open up your sound and give you a more clear sound. David
Dude I’ve been breathing wrong since elementary and now I’m in high school. Thank god I found this video

My sax teacher said the same thing: Belly full of air, let the diaphragm control the dynamics of the exhale and don't raise the shoulders.
Great! Great! It sure helps with the breath support. Take care!! David
My band director taught us how to make a sound and hasn’t said anything about our technique for 3 years
Hi!!
You mean your band director has not you helped you since the very beginning? Yikes!! David
So you should do it like when you breath too fast and get a stomach ache?
No seriously
I guess you could think of it that way. David
@@DrDavidandJudiKlee Okay... 😂Thanks!
Exactly the mistake I'm making, thanks a lot, but, I start to have an obvious belly!
Guys you could also try with your legs bent, it forces you to use your belly
I have not tried that technique. I will have to try it. David
