I personally am wary that RAW is a scam. They should have scholarships available or some way for artists who cant sell tickets to display their work. Otherwise it feels like you're asking people to pay to come to an event to spend more money on things that they may not want. It all feels a little...off, to me. Also, I've never met an artist that participated that sold products or art, or expanded their contact base as a result of participating (aka paying $400 for a single night event)

A scholarship or waiver would be a great idea. especially for first timers who are showcasing. great idea!

When I received an invitation from RAW to submit my artwork I must admit my first response was “is this a scam?”. So I checked it out then discovered that two other artists from my art collective were entering too!
My name is Barb DeRousie, I live in Victoria, BC, Canada and am about to embark on my first RAW showcase and I am so excited! My submission was accepted less than 2 weeks ago and I’ve sold 15 tickets to date. My impression is that this event is for emerging artists and I feel humbled to have this opportunity to show my artwork at this event.
I’ve been posting the RAW flyer featuring myself on Facebook and Instagram and have received lots of positive support. I will be prepared to sell my work at the show but that’s really not the main reason I wanted to participate, I just want to get myself out there and have the experience of seeing and listening to other emerging artists, basically I just want to do my best and get the most out of this unique platform. I’m really looking forward to it.

Someone gets their pockets full of money with this even and it is not the artists!

I loved this video! I honestly wasn't planning on listening to it to completion right now but your experience was detailed and informative enough that I felt like I had to allow my visual from your narrative to flow.

Raw artists is a scam! Stop hurting young artists!

Thank you for all of this and to those who commented. I have recently been contacted by RAW on Instagram to perform as a dancer. Weird thing is my Instagram is on private and I haven’t posted in 2 years (they do not follow me and thus cannot see my content either). Via email they mentioned having to sell 20 tickets as well as a long list of ‘benefits’ for me as a performer. But all of this sounded odd. Sounded like a dodgy desperate need to scam young artists. Luckily I came across your video and others. I will not be accepting their desperate invitation.

Do you happen to know how to go about using Superhero artwork and other potentially copyrighted works, can you display the so long as you don't sell them, or can you even sell them?

  • @sasetsasha8832

lol they didn't accept you because they already got your money from the submission.

saset sasha haha id be upset if that was the case! But they dont charge for submission. They get payday through ticket sales of the participating artists that have to sell them!

I read they do ask artists to sell tickets so it is the same thing. You have to convince 20 people to go that might as well buy you a painting better, if they want to really support you. Even if it is free the submission you make no money for showing up, ask if they do not pay musicians for showing to any event and play. I know what you are thinking! but these artist are nobody yet, well but wasn't that the point? to help the nobody yet artist? Either way really those events rarely help the career of any painter. First any artist fits in, so to be in the event doesn't communicate to anyone that you have any level of quality as a painter. Probably most artists will sell just one or tree paintings, because people do not go to that event to buy art they go to have fun maybe even drink. In your resume won't look any profesional to write an event where amateur artists show their work. For the pics of the past events is clear that those artists are very undeveloped and young and have no idea how to produce quality yet, neither they know how the real market of art in the world really helps promote success for an emerging artist. Professional pics in their page event are not gonna help you make a reputation as a serious painter. Now help would be artist being selected because there is some real challenge, artists who can also make money from the tickets because they show up, inviting the press to write about the artists, helping them sell the art for real not just letting them hang anything. That would help at least some few artist. Making events to just show their work won't help the career of anyone.

I like the way you think regarding finding better alternative solutions to helping the Visual artists. Overall it was an interesting experience for me. I wouldn't do it again, Raw has contacted me several times since then in the last year to which I've denied.
I say if you're going to create a platform for artists even if it's free your mission should be to help the artist with any and all resources you can, I'd avoid making them sell tickets to friends and family as there are other ways to support. I run a arts program here in Nyc where we provide arts resources and help network local artists and musicans. you can say Raw taught me how to not approach certain situations.

They contact me too! Yes I think that is the kind of experience that you do once and you learn those events do not help much your career. I know because while I said no to this event, I did a similar event before some years ago. I also think that experience thought me some few things about selling my art, as any other time I have sold pieces in person but you can really show your art in many venues that won't give you big exposure.
I am sure there are many ways to get recognition and the story of every person is different but what I think works better is to get real connections of people who actually have real knowledge on that industry in your specific type of art. To get those connections takes a lot of effort and comitment not to mention be willing to be mentored by them after you convince them that you really want to be a professional.
I also learn that you have to have a level of quality that is actually impressive and the only way to get there is to paint daily. The most difficult part is to be focus on your statement and the direction of your work so you can achieve a cohesive body of work of at least eight pieces. In other words specialization and creativity would make you stand out. If you create art like if you are Walt Mart instead of if you are Starbucks is gonna be more difficult to be recognized because you won't have an style. Just think about musicians, how hard is to stand out as a pop artist today? very because there are many and they are all good at it. You have to be very specific in your target audience and your theme or narrative. Just an advice from my own experience. Hope it helps!

Ah and of course the reason why this doesn't help visual artist is because that is not what they are after, they are after selling tickets to their event because that is how THEY make money.
