  • Just after 7 am Sunday morning Conroe Firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire at the Highway 105 Storage. Units arrived to find heavy fire in one of the buildings in the "E" and "F" rows of the huge storage facility. Additional units were requested from Montgomery and Lake Conroe Fire Departments for not just manpower but water supply. A single fire hydrant directly in front of the facility was dead. Close to 1000 feet of hose was laid from Old Montgomery and SH 105 West to the entrance of the facility. Even though additional hose was available, instead of laying several more thousand feet firefighters opted to use tankers to shuttle water. Firefighters were able to quickly cut into the single units to access the blaze and extinguish it. It is unknown the total loss, however, one unit did suffer extensive contents damage. A few others suffered fire damage and may have suffered smoke damage. Firefighters remain on the scene at 11am. Motorists are urged to watch for the firehouse on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes. Also, firetrucks leaveing the facility to refill on water. The median has also caused some issues as it takes all lanes of Westbound 105 for trucks to turn at the intersection of Old 105. Motorists approaching this intersection are urged to yield to these trucks. The owner who is currently out of town is enroute back and should arrive this afternoon to assess the damage and contact the individual owners. Even with temperatures in the upper 70's firefighters were quickly drained as they fought the blaze, rotating crews in short time increments for their safety. MCHD units remain on the scene should they be needed and Conroe Police are on the scene. Highway 105 Storage has been a pillar of the 105 area with the huge American Flag that is many times a navigation marker for boaters across the street on Lake Conroe. The owner for years has supported our local Veterans.

How does a fire hydrant become dead? I never knew that could happen.

Has anyone studied the long-term effects on firemen who routinely breath various toxins in the smoke from the fires they fight? The hazard goes well into their retirement and as such they should be compensated.
