Almost 1/3 of my life was filled with this amazing work of art that I've reread every once in a while. Sometimes just an arc, sometimes the whole manga. Recently, I had to write my first ever essay at the university, so as the obsessed fan I am, I wrote about the Lost Children Chapter. In the past few months I've spent more time, took a closer look reading Berserk. Today, I woke up to these news. Life is, indeed, just a constant struggle against hardships. It's sad to hear that togashi apparently already had a form of back up in the case of his untimely death with his wife, naoko takeuchi already having notes to the ending and having learned his artstyle.

I've been the whole day with only this in my mind not only because the series isn't going to end, but also because the death of one of the pillars in manga just hurts. The mangaka scene lost such a legend way too soon, he implanted a lot of the bases of dark fantasy. May you rest in peace and maybe reincarnate into another genius of manga making.

A lot of anime and manga use the trope of struggling against all odds to overcome their situation, to never give up the struggle and so on. But Berserk did it perfectly, when Berserk did it the trope wasn't overly played upon, it wasn't seen as an accomplishment that a protagonist used to get stronger - whenever Guts overcame something it came at a cost, of his body or of his mind. This level of realism and with the focus on the darker side of life, the trope is transformed from a Saturday morning cartoon of good guys overcoming bad guys to something much deeper and self reflective.
Berserk has taught me that while you may lose a part of yourself along the way, you can also grow despite of this. Guts loses his eye, his hand, even his mind to his inner rage, but despite all of that his friends come to shoulder his weight and move him forward. We might not realize Guts growth, but a good example of the comparison to pre eclipse Guts and post eclipse Guts is when Rickert see's Guts fighting Zodd among the hill of swords marking the graves of his former companions sacrificed for Gritifiths dream.
Iirc Rickert thinks to himself that the fight he is witnessing is nothing a human could achieve, the speed and the power behind Guts swings was as if he had transcended his humanity. At least that is the impression I got reading that chapter all those years ago. The lesson is this: no matter your setback, no matter your handicap, you may not give in, you must always try - to give in is to stagnate as a human. Guts is an admirable character not just because he doesn't give in (like every other shounen main character) but because he doesn't give in despite every hurdle overcome leading him further into pain, grief and loss. It is not enough to struggle, but to struggle and gain as much as you lose.
RIP Miura, you are the undisputed GOAT of story telling and we'll never see your like again, much to our indescribable grief.
