    I like the English language and this could have become a great musical hit on Broadway if they just had stuck to the original version. There’s so much magic in the German version of this musical. It’s not only comedy, it’s drama as well. You feel with the characters and not only laugh at them. In the German version you don't laugh at the count, because he is serious and authoritative. In this version he tells jokes… (although I laughed about the one with the mirror)

    • @bigred8432
      @bigred8432 6 лет назад +3

      The original as you say is a mixture of comedy and drama but there is A LOT of comedy -, you have a man carrying another frozen man on his back, villagers singing about garlic and then the dude arriving with the frozen guy and everybody reacting like it’s conpleteny normally and that’s just the first five minutes. The broadway production is bad, it missed the mark but if the original production had been presented as it was in Germany in would’ve died a death on broadway because that style of comedy (like in many other German/Russian/French) musicals is awkward in English. What it needed was an adaptation where the creative team understood the original intent and tweaked and cajoled the original into something more palatable for broadway. However that takes skill. It takes skill to look at a song like the villagers garlic number and say ‘what is funny about this in German and why?’ Then create a set of lyrics that are not a direct translation but honour the original intent. That’s what tHis needed. But the problem with doing that is the interpretation of the Count. Playing a role completely straight amidst a sea of comedy seems to work in foreign language movies, plays, musicals - it’s a cultural thing. It just doesn’t sit well in an English translation. Mixing high drama and comedy in English always just ends up looking silly or completely uneven. I can understand why Michael Crawford panicked during the lead up to Broadway and why the tone of the show needed to be more even. He isn’t wrong, for it to work on a commercial level with English speaking audiences the tone needs to be more even. However they absolutely screwed up and the tone is just as uneven as beguile expect now we have straight faced Vampire dance sequences and then parody

    in the original (German) version; Sarah is bathing and the Count meets her there (yes, while she's in the bathtub) and the Count is just overwhelming with his presence, intimidating and seductive at the same time, oh I don't even know how to put it, but this is a mere parody of the original version.

    THERE WAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL AND THEY THREW IT ALL AWAY.

    I'm sure Michael is laughing all the way to the bank unless he had a stake in the show. He's a real stage pro who can take his lumps, it's not the first show that's failed in his career. I hope he does more recordings and concert shows, that voice is still a gem and nobody does show tunes like he does. Rock on, Mr. Crawford!

      TRUE! I'd have died to see him play a vampire regardless if how bad it was! And I'm sure if I knew German, I could enjoy the original. So right NOW, I'm watching Michael, here, for the first time in DOTV.
      Just gotta hear his voice despite all else.

    My ears are bleeding now. But thank you for uploading this, it’s interesting to watch.
    So I guess it’s a good thing Steve didn’t get that part, that Krolock wouldn’t have done him any justice, unless he could have changed the directors’ mind about, well the whole US concept of this brilliant musical.

    • @ToWatchList
      @ToWatchList 6 лет назад +6

      I hate to say it but this debacle is largely Michael's fault. I read somewhere that they were going to do the show as a replica of the German production but Michael didn't want to play another "Phantom"-like character (mysterious, sensual, conflicted, etc) so soon after Phantom and made them change the show. Star power like that must be nice to have...

    • @MichaelKnaepen
      @MichaelKnaepen 6 лет назад +4

    The worst part is that at this time he was struggling with myalgic encephalomyelitis at the time so the pain you see on his face is very real. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is not for the faint of the heart.
    Doctors used to scoff at this kind of disease cause it was all in the mind but despite all his pain and sleep deprivation he managed at 61 years old to put on heavy make up and sing opera under the unforgiving lights of the stage .
    Someone give him a round of applause, perhaps a crown cause he deserves it.

    I think most things have been said about this... production... of TdV. What I'd also like to point out: Crawford is WAY TOO OLD for the part.
    And although TdV is, at times, humorous, it is definitely NOT strictly a comedy and Krolock is supposed to be an authoriative, serious, slightly sexy and incredibly sad character... and not a joke.

    Les Miserables, Phantom Of The Opera, Blood Brothers, Cats, Starlight Express....5 of the longest running shows in the world...none of them by an American...and in the top 10 only 6th, 9th & 10th were by an American composer. Also Jim Steinman said the company producing wanted a ton of jokes added to this as that's what audiences at the time wanted.

    I can't decide wether this version is so bad because it's so americanised or if it is because of the lack of acting and because no one put some real effort into it. The thing is that I know that Crawford can do much better! He was a fantastic Phantom. Luckily, the German, Russian and Finnish (and lots of the other European) productions are way better. It saddens me though that America never managed to get a real taste of blood ;)

    • @totesgene
      @totesgene 6 лет назад +6

      A lot of the fault with the failure of DOTV is because of Michael Crawford. The producers wanted a HUGE name above the title and Michael wouldn't do it as written in Tanz because the character was too much like the Phantom. He wanted it to be a comedy and wanted that ridiculous Italian accent.

Only someone who just watches American musicals can say something like that. Austria alone already produced three fantastic ones: Rebecca, Elisabeth and Tanz der Vampire. Oh and have you heard of Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables yet and NO, they are NOT American. Watch those first before posting such a thing.

    @CoralineBlack The heavy, dark German version, like their beer, doesn't suit the taste of popular audiences in the US. Better if they'd just adapted the original movie's lighter touch. After losing out on the Phantom movie lead, his handlers should have put up a show better suited to his amazing talent, like a musical based on the life of Danny Kaye, one of his early influences. That would have put him back on top. I blame his agent/producers for letting him get into this disaster.

      The original is a mixture of comedy and drama but there is A LOT of comedy -, you have a man carrying another frozen man on his back, villagers singing about garlic and then the dude arriving with the frozen guy and everybody reacting like it’s conpleteny normally and that’s just the first five minutes.

    Hi. Have you ever heared of Andrew Lloyd Webber? I didn't think so.....otherwise you wouldn't have written such a stutupid comment. By the way: I have seen the German production in Hamburg. Just listen to some songs and compare them to the american version. Crawford is a great singer, but his voice is just not made for this musical....And he wanted to change the musical into a comedy. and they did so. They wanted a star but that was one of the reasons why the musical did not work. Too bad :D

      You can't really steal something when you are the one who wrote. Jim Steinmein wrote the song and used a lot of his songs in this musical.
