I personally work in Sunglass Sales & I gotta agree that big part of it is marketing and branding which there is actually a pretty big market for
Also when I started at the job I thought my perception on Sunglasses quality wouldn’t change, but oh boy was I wrong.
Personally I really recommend Persol for something similar to RayBan but way better quality. You’re just paying a premium but not quite for just a brand, plus they’re handmade in Italy so it’s good bang for your buck.($300ish price range)
Another brand that even though I haven’t had much experiencend much but anything I’ve ever touched Tom Ford has been exceptional quality- yes there’s a different between plastics. It’s like they’re stiff but also extremely smooth at the same time if that makes any sense. They make some pretty minimal chill designs and also very fun and quirky tint lenses with cool designs($500 range)
Pd. Also some brands are hit or miss

I’m willing to pay more-specifically with sunglasses
-for technology that will actually protect your eyes and vision, and coatings/lens treatments that don’t rub off. A little style never hurt either. The Luxottica markup is both real and ridiculous but I figure unless you are incredibly clumsy/absent minded sunglasses are a one or two time purchase unless you are consumed by consumption/want a different accessory for every outfit, which I am not condemning, by the way. I would never pay 675 for a pair of glasses though even if I needed them to see 😂

You should review a few pieces from the brands HARE ( 70 -300 dollar range) and RAGEBLUE ( in the 40 to 150 dollar range at most ) they are budget - ish friendly Japanese brands from the Dotst group in Japan. Both brands focus on Japanese streetwear although they differ in style a bit from one another. Both brands seem underrated outside of Japan and I think they both would fit your style perfectly. And great vid, keep it up bro.

Grabbed sum SLP 522s off ssense for $550 after tax shipped, 100% was worth it as the rectangular cat eye shape, black gradient tint, UV A/B protection, engraved text & sturdy build are all unique to this pair. They also sold out after I copped & the recent restock is almost gone again 🤐

Luxxottica also manufacture for Gucci, they honestly own so much of the market its insane, genuinely like almost every big designer brand. So yeah, important to consider when you buy glasses, because any Luxxottica brand is probably just not gonna have the same level of care put into each frame compared to a similarly priced brand.
That doesn't mean Luxxottica is *necessarily* low quality, especially a lot of the dedicated, OG heritage glasses brands they own (Persol, Oliver Peoples etc.) still make really great quality glasses, I'm wearing an Oliver Peoples pair right now as I write this and I love them - but still, any corporation that big just can't put the same level of detail and attention in across the board as an independent brand, it's just not possible.
Oliver Peoples is a really great example - Oliver Peoples still makes really great frames, but since they were bought out by Luxxottica, all the people who used to work there, including the founders, have now moved to their own independent brand called Garrett Leight Optical - it's a bit like what happened with Doc Martens and Solovair if people know about that, though Oliver Peoples haven't dropped off in quality as much as Docs. Garrett Leight now makes frames that at least as good quality, probably better than OP (I've never owned a pair so can't say for sure), at a similar price.
The only trade off is that Garrett Leight frames are way less accessible, because they're not available in many stores - which isn't surprising considering Luxxottica also owns most glasses stores like Vision Direct, Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters etc., so they can keep competing brands out of their stores. In the UK where I live, I'd guess there's probably like half as many stores selling Garrett Leight as are selling Oliver Peoples.
Personally I don't mind owning my Oliver Peoples, because I tried them on in store and loved how they look on my face, I really struggle to find glasses that fit my face so if I find a pair that works in store, I'm almost always gonna settle for that rather than buying online. Also, I got my Oliver Peoples for a huge discount because I was a Luxxottica employee when I bought them.
Anyways, that was long as hell, but if you care a lot about glasses e.g. you wear prescription glasses like I do so you know you're gonna be wearing them day in, day out, this is all useful stuff to consider.

@@FlyWithJohnnyThai Haha thanks bro. Killed it with the video btw, loving this Worth It series, really gets you thinking about the best ways to spend money strategically when levelling up your style. It's almost like a videogame - the question is basically, do I spread my XP across the board evenly, putting some in pants, shoes, jackets etc, or do I dump it all on glasses?

    • @aidanhx
      @aidanhx Год назад +1

Second this. I used to work in a sunglass shop here in the UK and it’s true Luxxottica basically runs the market, most people don’t realise they’re paying a premium for a pair that probably isn’t much better quality than it’s cheaper, less prestigious counterpart…
That being said, my personal recommendations have to be Oliver Peoples, Persol, Oakley, DITA, and Serengeti

My problem with this is that you can't just "try different frames". It's too expensive if you want quality. You can't just keep on buying expensive pieces and find your style. It's impractical. So that's why the cheap frames come in real handy.
