2.5 hrs hurricane Sandy emergency responses

  • I actually had quite many business meetings in New York City, but hurricane Sandy messed that up - in some way good for me, so I had tons of emergency vehicles to film :)
Here's a 2.5 hours long compilation of emergency responses the days before, during and the days after hurricane Sandy. No matter whether FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, MTA Police, NGUS, USACE, USCG or whatsoever, here you see pretty much anything. Even emergency vehicles from other cities and states (like e.g. Superior from the Chicagoland area) were present with several vehicles.
Of course not every single emergency responses is a consequence of the hurricane (like e.g. Medical call at Macy's with the Ambulance and Engine 1), but I didn't sort them out since it's hard to determine whether it is or isn't linked to Sandy in many cases.
It will propably be the last video in 2012, enjoy it :)

We visited New York for the first time that month and after sightseeing left on a flight out of JFK , with Hurricane Sandy striking NY that night . Problem for us was that we then had to fly over the top of the Hurricane which was a fun old time on the plane . Better than any rollercoaster . Thanks for posting , I can relate to these scenes occuring just after we left

On Long Island we had a lot of U.S. Forest Service trucks. They were sending teams of two trucks per neighborhood to cut up downed trees and branches. They were also trained in forest fire fighting so they backed up the power companies when they were removing trees and branches from downed wires. And great vid.

I remember after the storm hit, my family ran to the local hardware store, to replace the fuel cans we had donated (we need them for our snowblower during the winter); almost half the parking lot was filled with Utility Vehicles on their way to the disaster area. Just about every power company in our area was sending trucks down, there were even trucks that had driven all the way from Canada! I think they were working together and traveling as one massive caravan, and decided to stop for a quick break. As the hardware store was part of a small strip mall that had a grocery store and a couple small restaurants.

well yeah from time to time they ask me what we do (as if that wasn't clear to see, holding up a camera ;), but at some depts some staff really showed us the middle finger, came towards us with the raised fist, insulted us and want to force us to deleate the video (luckily just some don't like us). Even though I know that it's all legal what I film, I try not to hold the camera directly onto the front seats and their faces.

14:40 It's nice to see an NYPD vehicle that actually says 'POLICE' on the side. It bothers me that NYPD has become a 'brand' and more important than displaying what service you're actually providing. LAPD has gone the same way.

This video makes great stress relief,
With living in the UK, I was literally cursing everyone that got in the way of the emergency services,
Then I realised that the flashing lights don’t mean anything, you just put your foot down when their up your ass with the sirens wailing,
Here in the UK you have to pull to one side to let them past even when their only on blue lights,
By the end of this vid I assumed that NY Taxis are your first emergency service, as everyone seems to gives way to them,

Same reason that many major cities have Airport Police that aren't part of the city police and many rail systems have their own agencies (like the MTA Police) as do large ports (like the LA Port Police). PAPD performs all those functions for NYC in airports, rail and bus terminals.. Plus PAPD is also certified and licensed in NJ (like MTA Police are also commissioned in CT and the Metro-Transit Police in Washington are commissioned in VA, MD and DC) because their area crosses state lines.

have noticed the per a number of other New York videos that show their pd vehicles, have noticed they they tend to drive around alot normally, meanong possibly not going to any calls or anything just driving around with all of their overheads and everything going, so really can never tell if they are actually responding to a call or not...LOL

Around here in Britain we have several different vehicles as well, it's quite logical to do that for different emergency situations, it's more logical in big high rise metropolis as well.
Although it's a hell of a lot in NY :D
