  • Hi guys, this is a fun video of a Rain Water Harvesting Umbrella that one can make with a cheap umbrella. Word cheap is important because it should be low cost and bad quality because it has to be the type that inverts easily with a strong gust of wind.

I have a friend in Ghana who relies on catching rainwater for his needs. Currently, he places buckets next to the roof to catch the rainwater. But, unless it's a very long storm, he barely catches enough rainwater for a short supply. I have been trying to think of a way he could catch the maximum amount of water without having to continually go out in the rain to transfer his buckets. Something like this would be ideal for him. For his purposes, though, using an umbrella in its normal position would be best. I think I'll make him one of these if i can find an old-fashioned umbrella with a handle hook that he could simply hang on the edge of his roof and divert the rain to his rain barrel. Thank you for this video. You've given me something to construct for my friend in Ghana.

hi, when you put the umbrella upside down, you might need to tie the peripheral ends of each rod with a thread and tie it up to the handle. this way IF the water collects because of some clogging etc, or if the rain is too heavy, the rod will not bend and break under the weight of the collected water.

I keep thinking about massive portable "umbrella" type cones that are an acre in size, to catch rain water over fields that don't need more water. This massive water flow could be drained into large water tanks or directly into tank trucks that can take it to areas of drought for the farmers and to refill reservoirs. There is money in water, as farmers will pay to get rid of it and other farmers will pay to get it. Cities and states will pay to refill their lakes and ponds. We transport oil and gas in trucks for massive use. Water can become a commodity also, and everyone benefits.

Why not put the hole as close to the center where all the water will collect?
