  • In this episode of the Sit Down, I speak to Pulitzer Prize finalist, author Pete Earley as we delve into the life of Thomas "Terrible Tom" Silverstein. Silverstein was the longest inmate in solitary confinement in this history of the federal prison system. We discuss his early life, the depraved murders he committed and his excruciating experiences in the worst and most secure federal prisons in America.

This is really interesting to me in the fact that I actually met Silverstein in transfer in Oklahoma. I had no idea of his history but we got along for the two to three weeks we spent together and played cards together a bunch. Something the other inmates warned against because of his history. I had never read the hot house and he urged me to do so but not to judge him, which I didn't. He just seemed really happy to have a friend that was a fellow artist, I'm currently a professional tattoo artist in Winston Salem NC. He was really friendly and I never even felt uncomfortable or in any way fearful of him in any way, I had no preconceived notions of him so therefore didn't believe he was dangerous, which after reading the book and learning more about him I didn't feel any different as far as that goes, just really sorry for him. He was a really nice guy during the time I spent with him. He told me they removed a tumor from his brain that made him act violently and that now that they did that they were evaluating him for release, which was probably some kind of imagined thing due to what I know now, but who knows. Regardless it's really interesting to hear his story in depth. I just remember how uncomfortable other people were with me walking the block with him all day and talking about art with him and didn't really understand it so much. What a crazy sad life he had to live, it's really an injustice in and of itself. Thank you for making this podcast or whatever it's called.

Having spent several decades in Canadian federal prisons I read everything I could get my hands on concerning everything regarding history but especially prison and the hot house is probably the best book ever written, Pete Earley hit the nail right on the head with his research but his access to Atlanta was unprecedented then and I am sure nobody has or will ever get as close as Pete got into the system. everything he says regarding prison life is on the mark as far as I'm concerned, granted I was never in the American system, but to get as close to Silverstein as he did is amazing, great interview Jeff I love how your research/interview technique is always unbiased and how non judgmental you always are with your work, irregardless who or what your subject is, thanks for shutting down the speculators and Bozos like you do on your podcasts, I recommend you read 10 men dead the story of the I.R.A. and the H blocks prison in Northern Ireland, R.I.P. I've never heard of CO's wearing side arms. Only firearms I heard of in prison is non lethal guns that would should wooden or rubber pellets, as well as lethal "real" rifles that of course would kill but were only used during riots and fights in which an inmate wouldnt surrender to the non lethal weapons and/or another inmate or a guards life was already threatened.

I had a friend who worked there and me and my dad got an 8 hour personal tour in 1996 I think it was.. and I seen silverstein.. he was under a building that was separated from the big prison. It literally under the building. Now I only seem him on a TV screen but I was in that building. And the guard personally told me they had turned off his hot water for 6 years!!!!!!! The guards hated him so bad he wouldn't even say a word to him. I watched him on that TV but all he did was sleep. The guard made us read the hot house before we could take the tour so I new who he was..I thought what they where doing was cruel as hell.... but yep I was right in that prison for a day. Nobody was locked down or anything. I was scared man really scared won't lie.. they even told me they wanted till it was a moonless night and then blindfolded him before they moved him in that room ..all so he couldn't see the night sky or the outside.. I thought it was sick. But they fucking hated him that bad

NO that isn’t going to happen maybe he picked up some good cleaning and prison mannerisms but if he says he’s institutionalized after one year he would have to had something done to him or seen it done too someone else so no he isn’t why would he say that after knowing that lieing and cheating or faking the funk is not tolerated listen if you come a neighborhood on the streets where murder happens just as much as living then u go to prison it’s all the same just a different location the game changes location but the game stay some Jeff you seem like your starting to get an idea a little bit on how the joint rolls I’m from LOS Angeles come from generational family of convicts heroin, gangs , drugs it was normal so all prison was is a place to learn new methods of crime there were no rehabilitation Especially the shu that’s a sad story in itself
