It’s easy to get caught up in the “Cult of the New” and feel you need to chase the latest stuff. I think one of the issues with playing older minis games is people like to buy new stuff and when they’re largely unsupported this can be the reason people move on. That said look at how Blood Bowl was supported by a community until GW decided to bring it back.

I love that Inq28 and AoS28 are getting more exposure. I'm not waxing lyrical when I say it's what stopped me from leaving the hobby a few years back.
I had got stuck in the loop of grinding through painting troops and trying to keep armies up to date with my more competitive friends and I just lost all feeling toward the hobby.
Discovering the Inq28 community at that time helped me to step back, take stock and remember what it was that I personally loved about the hobby and drew me to it in the first place. And for me that was the settings, conversions and creating fun narrative. Plus my love of older editions/games goes hand in hand with the aesthetic, 40k, Necromunda, Gorkamorka, Mordheim and skirmish games from small producers all welcome.
The community itself has some of the most creative, friendly and helpful people in the hobby. Always sharing their stories, images and hobby tips with one another. It's a wonderful scene to experience.

What blew me away when I found that magazine was how similar it was to the OSR (Old-School Renaissance), which is a movement/subculture in D&D. An initially small, but then quickly growing network of people intrigued by the simplicity, aesthetic, and playstyle of early D&D, who have since built up a huge library of self-published books, which look as good or better than the official D&D stuff being put out by Wizards of the Coast. Lots of author collaboration, a focus on unique and idiosyncratic settings, monsters, spells, etc all generally cross compatible.

the Inq28 and AoS28 communities are fantastic - so many great models. I think that, other than the hobby side of things, one of the big draws is that the style (blanchitsu mainly, but it's broader than that) really captures the darker and stranger tone that used to be present in 40k and fantasy (Mordheim for instance) but seems to be lacking in more recent editions. It also means that modellers can create characters and styles that aren't typically represented in the mainstream games or lore but still fit really well.
It also gives you a good reason to use all those spare bits that have been accumulating in a box :P

Confrontation! Went out of print some 10 years ago, community kept it alive mostly in Europe. I still have models and we played from time to time but got bored of having the same models all the time. Recently a French company bought the rights and did a Kickstarter, and collected a lot of money, but it seems they didn't deliver as promised.
And the 28 magazine is AWESOME! My friend Ana contributed to it (absolutely check her blog gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/) and I am starting to make something for that "game" (or setting?) just for the fun of inventing a theme and story and converting models for a small warband.

I am looking at Warlords of Erehwon rulebook right now, because I miss the old Warhammer. Made me sad to find it gone when I finally started having time to play again. Shadowrun, Space Hulk, Necromunda, Mordheim grabbed my son's attention and Warhammer and 40K drew us on into the hobby many years ago. BlackJack is exactly right about the cult of the new, especially when companies like GW tinker with the rules to encourage people to go nuts and build 7 hive tyrants for a tournament. Not sure how that is healthy, in a lot of ways.
What these folks have done takes a lot of care and effort, and I wish them joy. Another great and interesting vid.

I started D&D with 3.5. A quick Amazon suggested link rabbit hole got me into OSR and Oldhammer type stuff.
I really do enjoy seeing some of the elements from older games that we're outright dropped just an edition or two later.
There's also getting the feel of an older game. The look of D&D 5e with nice Dungeon tiles and Wizkids figures is so different than Basic D&D with tiles that weren't the right scale and different ranges from different companies in those wonderful crude but loaded with character sculpts cast in pewter or lead.
I think there's something amazing about playing an old game like a time capsule, and something just as amazing with innovating and adding to those classics.

One that I've been curious about is Chainmail, which as many of you will know is the medieval miniature wargame written by Gary Gygax which spawned the original Dungeons and Dragons. There's a pdf that floats around of a 3rd edition, but I've never really played it, and I'm not sure how well it would hold up next to more modern games. If I ever get around to throwing together a couple of armies for the Hundred Years War I'll definitely give it a go.

Sidenote: If you make your own server, youre often asking for a cease and desist from the publisher. In the case of online video games (at least) you are beholden to the copyright holders at all times. Even a litigious company like GW would be hard pressed to find every basement or side room that has a table set up for their discontinued games. You buy the book, you're buying the right to run/play that game in perpetuity.

youll always have ur games, youll always have ur models, modding rules or making your own games is as easy as imagining it... yep, theres a lot to be said about physical gaming vs virtual gaming. I think ppl are realising it too and thats why theres a lot of people coming back to the hobbies, the rise of the net and online gaming around the early 2000s dragged a lot away and people are finding the huge amount of time and money they pumped into that rpg, arpg, mmorpg, fps etc has disappeared into the didigtal stream but they still have the games and models they owned before in the 90s, and theres something to be said for that when it comes to investing time and money moving forward in their lives.

The Conclave forum still exists (just about) as a hold out from the origins of Inquisitor and remains primarily (but by no means exclusively) focused on the 54mm side of things. These days the community has shifted primarily to facebook groups ("Inquisitorium" and "Inquisitor 54mm"), where if anything it is getting bigger and bigger, although the relaunch of Kill Team and Necromunda have played a large part in that as well and tend to get bunched in with Inquisitor.
The rules have technically always been scale-agnostic and specifically talks about using different model scales in the rulebook.

there's one thing that triggers the "old but gold" in digital gaming: consoles. i still have and love my sega genesis and all its games - yes, even "alex kidd in the enchanted castle" - and we still get together to play street fighter 2 (the 1993 special champion edition, of course, which cost a whooping 135 DM back in the day and for which i had to save half a year's pocket money) tournaments. yes, a lot of people value newer games and consoles over the old ones, but the latters' charme and antique antics really make up for it.
on inquisitor: even when it came out in 2001/2002, it was difficult to find people who actually wanted to play a larger scale narrative rpg tabletop game. the not-so-minis were rather expensive, very difficult to customize and due to their size, they looked horrible with bad paint jobs. however, =][= in 28mm is one of the best, if not THE best community-based adaptions of a failed game, as you rightly put it. the community itself is among the most welcoming, encouraging and creative out there - niche³ seems to attract nice people.

The Inquisitor book was fantastic just for the artwork, the lore and the models. Ignoring the rules it's an interesting window into the 40k universe. The game itself was an added bonus. Sadly, I didn't know anyone that wanted to play it at the time. It's nice to know there's a flourishing INQ28 community out there.

I found an complete copy of "warzone" second edition at a thrift store for $25. game seems cool but doesn't seem like people still play it. Also got a copy of "Space Hulk" for $35.

Still playing my historical games with rules from 20 years ago. Most new stuff just dosn't do it for me. BTW do you see the competitive and point system as negative for the hobby? There is too much cheese in tournaments and rarely in warfare were battles fair. Worse generals didn't choose their troops they fight with what they have and make it work.

having been immersed in the videogame community since childhood, I can definitely say that there are robust modding and emulation communities that make this kind of thing possible for many videogames as well (generally referred to as “abandonware” since it’s no longer being supported/updated by its creators), and that these are fairly easy to get into from the player’s side...but making these emulators and mods can indeed be tricky for the people who initially develop them, especially with games which are set up online-only (only a problem with the last decade of games) or otherwise require code to run that is not “on disc” and therefore has to be re-created from scratch or leaked...you sometimes hear about a community successful in resurrecting that kind of game (usually with the help of an insider leak), but it’s not common.
Once the initial hurdle of figuring out how to replicate the old computer architecture it’s expecting, decompile the code into a modern language modders can understand, or fool it into thinking the PC in the admin’s garage is the proprietary server that it’s trying to access, they connect & expand in much the same way that tabletop games do, and can be maintained and updated to keep up with modern OSes fairly easily. Thus, despite the differences, I think they have more in common than the video seems to imply: I can still play 1st Ed. Dungeons & Dragons as long as somebody still has the manuals, and likewise I can still play the original rollercoaster tycoon or starcraft if I find and install an emulator for the system they ran on (MS-DOS, IIRC?)...or if I find a community mod project like OpenRCT2, I can play RCT1 scenarios with RCT2’s greater variety of park elements and somewhat more streamlined game engine, a host of community bug fixes, and online multiplayer functionality for a game that had no multiplayer whatsoever before in a genre that has rarely made multiplayer work even in modern iterations-much like 28 magazine’s errata/patch for Inquisitor, but not requiring you to have or make a set of miniatures that are compatible withthe system, just a download and install prompt.
There are also definitely a lot of gamers who are pushing for as many games as possible to have an “end of life plan” in place. Basically, this would mean that when the developers decide to cut support for an old game with online components and and stop offering legitimate ways to buy it, they patch it to allow it to be played offline, peer-to-peer, on a private server or alternatively just publish the server-side portions of the source code (enough that it runs, but not *necissarily* the whole thing) so the community can figure out how to make those necessary patches (presumably with a license agreement allowing them to run it so long as they don’t pass it off as their own or sell it). So far the corporate end of most game companies haven’t really bitten (despite how little work it really requires on their end, and how much good will the few who have done so have received for doing so), but there is a growing concensus among rank-and-file of the industry and the review and player bases that contribute to the industry that this kind of stuff really needs to be thought about soon so we don’t get the same situation as with early Movies and TV where many old classics that would be useful as are now lost forever.

I’m all for tabletop games but I like digital games too, modern and old, and yeah I do agree that the server run ones will disappear some day but the universes of digital games can be just as much fun as well as a great experience, I don’t thing either type should be bashed just enjoyed

There is a bit of an equivalent of the "severs being shut down" for some tabletop games; its hard to find online support for rules questions. I personally prefer older editions of Warhammer 40k, but trying to find the FAQs and rules erratas for things like that can be pretty hard. Sure, we can just houserule, but I like to have official verdicts on game problems.

Chess is good, but I preferred the 2 editions back, before they added Queens, the clock, and when castling was an exploit that required skill to execute (i.e. distracting the other player) instead of a core mechanic. And the asymmetric objective-play rules from Chess’s 12.6 “Hnefatafl” expansion were GOLDEN. They need to bring that back.

    Warhammer Quest (1995) FTW
The only problem is no-one in my local area, Braintree, Essex, UK, plays it. Can't even find people who play Warhammer Fantasy Battle/AoS or 40k near enough that I can use public transport to reach them. Being unable to drive doesn't help at all! The handful of clubs that exist might as well be on the moon!!
You'd think, as I have 2 Games Workshop stores within 20 miles that Braintree, Essex, UK, would have at least 1 games club/group that play Games Workshop stuff. Nope. There's only a handful of tabletop games clubs in North Essex, UK,and they all appear to be in either my nearest city (Chelmsford) or nearest largest town (Colchester), coincidentally where both GW stores in the area are, but none are accessible by public transport users!! Can't even get home to my house in Braintree, Essex, UK from a GW games night using public transport!!!
