“News” Versus “Olds” in Managing Menopause - 105

  • Have you ever really given much thought to the meaning of the word “news”? News means new information. It’s a lot like education. But, do you really want to hear new things, or do you just want to hear confirmation of old things? (I call what you already know - or THINK you already know - “olds.) Do you find it uncomfortable to hear news that doesn’t fit with what you already know? And if that’s the case, how do you ever really learn anything new? When it comes to your menopause education, you need to welcome “news” rather than just “olds.” It’s the difference between “information” and “confirmation.”

    I have been a diligent student Dr. Taylor starting at lesson 1. Thank you for educating me on a subject I really knew very little about. This one really hit the nail on the head for me. I have listened to many "natural" minded friends for years about the "doom and gloom" of menopause and it had me terrified. I also thought estrogen was "bad" until I now realized I've been bathed in it my entire life. Blessed estrogen, I really don't want to part ways with you. Thank you for sharing this valuable information in bite size pieces that everyone can understand. I'll be 47 next month and am thankful that I have the tools to have menopause MY way. Bless you for your teaching heart!

    Another thoughtful video. "Confirmation bias" also pertains to our practitioners. Some are comfortable with HRT, some are not. Many MDs still believe that estrogen is the devil. 👿 What the patient tells them does not always "fit" their training...

      Oh, I am so sorry for this tardy reply. The RUclips comments on my end are supposed to line up all the new ones so that I don’t have to search for them one-video-at-a-time. You are correct. But, you need to realize that there's very little education on menopause in the medical training curriculum,. Most doctors have only 1 hour! That's why I urge you to find a menopause specialist for managing your menopause.

    My recent visit to my Gyno reminded me of that cartoon, “Road Runner”! I swear...I was on that table all of 3 minutes without any exaggeration for a simple vaginal itching problem (nothing serious...just sweating a lot) as so I was told and I didn’t even get a Pap smear or a true exam. I had to make yet another appointment for that. ???? What’s that all about? If you asked me what this doctor looked like I’d have to say she looked like an 3 minute screen shot of an examining room....period. I was armed with my questions of course, but try tracking down the doctor on your way out the door to ask a simple question of any kind. So sad. In any event, I always have you so that makes it all feel much better. Thanks again Dr. Barbie...you’re a top banana in my book.

      Why am I missing all your comments? Somethings different.
      I'll be giving you videos on the medical system itself. And the sad fact is that doctors are miserable with how they have to practice medicine. There are all these stipulations and requirements that they practice a certain way or they don't get paid. They call it "Pay for Performance," or "Value-Based Care." But it's really just cost-containment measures that force doctors to see as many patients as possible. In so doing, they will address only one problem, and require you to come back for another appointment for anything else.
      Medicine in the U.S. has become nothing but big business, just like everything else. In medicine, though, the people who run the business are not doctors. They are the insurance companies and the entities that own the medical practices.

    Bullseye Dr. Taylor!
    I have not always liked what you have to say. That is a fact! I have been honest with you when the things you say have angered me in the comments. Not mad at you but mad at the things you have said.
    I am seeking truth, facts, knowledge, and an education on menopause so that I understand it and do not continue believing the misconceptions.
    This makes video #105 so far. I started this education with you about 3 months ago around the time I found out I needed my sacropoplexy surgery.
    I went from being anti-hormones of any kind to being prescribed estradiol vaginal cream to help with my symptoms until we had medical insurance so I could have the surgery.
    I was anti estrogen, and brainwashed by the internet and the literature my Divigel came with that said take smallest dose for the least amount of time so I got scared and stopped using it after using it for almost 2 yrs.
    Now, after stopping in 2018, being told I had atrophy and after surgery if I dont want the same thing to happen again I needed to use estradiol vaginal cream for the rest of my life. 😳 I was shocked and thought I will just use this and nothing else.
    Well now after learning all of the things up until this point, I can tell you this about this post menopausal woman. I will now be the woman that says to her doctors, "You can pry my estrogen out of my cold dead hands."
    What truly clicked was when you said in one of your many videos, "how can estrogen be so bad and dangerous for you when we are born with it.?" It just made so much sense. Especially since I now see I am basically falling apart and exercise, herbs, eating whole foods, etc has not been enough for me to thrive during this last phase of my life. Plus...We were born with many hormones and yet they seem to push progesterone which is for the baby and they say estrogen is "evil." Lol.
    Anyways. I am still not done learning more facts and truth and knowledge from you.
    Thank you.

      Yvette, my dear, the truth makes sense. And you are discovering that your own body is telling you where the truth lies. I'm merely a vehicle for helping you connect al the dots.
      I am just so very proud of you! The way you have poured yourself into this education is just so wonderful. I can "hear" the confidence in your words. And I know that all the decisions are yours. That's what this education is all about. Brava!

    I'm so glad i challenged myself and thought outside of the box. Since i love holistic and alternative medicine the most, i'll sometimes "scoff" at traditional medicine. If i didn't pay close attention to what you said and continued to listen to the holistic/alternative community, i would still be slathering progesterone cream all over myself and slowly going insane (progesterone can worsen a mood disorder and guess what? i learned that MYSELF after researching) but i listened carefully to you and put myself back on Estrogen because i was so deficient! I am still trying to figure out how to use progesterone but am keeping an open mind now and doing what is best for me.
    Menopause Barbie, i still do not understand these Naturopaths..i know they SELL the progesterone cream but how can they think that progesterone is the answer when it clearly IS NOT? Don't they know it's the "baby's" hormone? How can they be that stupid and bias???

    • @MenopauseTaylor

      I don't have an answer as to why other practitioners do what they do. I think every industry has a way of telling it's professional how to think and act. I see this everywhere. There are very few independent thinkers these days. I've always been one to question why things are the way they are. I look for reason, logic, and sensibility in everything. Facts and reality make sense. And that' what I teach you.
      Remember, no one will ever take care of you as well as you take care of yourself. That's why I teach you everything and then respect whatever you choose to do.

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  5 лет назад +1

      I will be giving you many videos n weight gain at menopause. But here are the basics:
      Menopause causes your metabolism to slow down ... waaaaay down. That alone causes you to gain weight at menopause.
      But that’s not all that happens.
      In addition to a slower metabolism, your body distributes fat differently. It packs it on in your midline ... in your abdomen. Even women who are not overweight will tell you that their waist isn’t as small as it used to be. That hourglass figure becomes boxy.
      And your fat cells produce a different kind of estrogen, called estrone, that is unhealthy. It increases your risk for heart attack.
      So, there are many forces working against that girly figure once you become post-menopausal.
      It takes much more to accomplish the same goals ... at a time when you’re more fatigued & more likely to hurt yourself. Just knowing this can make a huge difference in your expectations & approach.
      One of the biggest mistakes is dieting. You should eat more frequently not less frequently. And, of course, it’s the perfect time to adopt a cleaner, healthier way of eating.
      Your body is very smart. Its goal is survival. So, it adjusts your metabolism to accommodate how often you feed yourself.
      If you eat frequently, your body gobbles up the food because it knows it will get fed again soon. That constitutes a fast metabolism.
      Eat breakfast! I can't tell you how many women LOSE weight simply by eating breakfast. Unfortunately, the vast majority skip breakfast.
      If you don't eat frequently, your body holds onto as much as it can as fat because it doesn't know when it will get fed again. That constitutes a slow metabolism.
      Fasting makes absolutely no sense at all. All it does is slow down your metabolism. That's the opposite of what you want.
      No diet that has a beginning and an end will do any good. The effects will be temporary ... just like the diet itself. The best thing you can do is to adopt eating habits that you can maintain forever.
      The weight gain issue is one of the biggest misconceptions about menopause.
      Think about it:
      All the years of your reproductive life, when you still have estrogen on board, you don't have a weight problem.
      But when you LOSE your estrogen, you gain weight.
      So, it's the loss of estrogen that is to blame. It's Mother Nature's fault. And it happens because loss of estrogen slows down your metabolism and causes you to deposit fat in your belly area.
      All the years of your reproductive life you had "bloating" due to temporary water weight that was a result of fluctuating hormones, most significantly just before your period started.
      Now, in your post-menopausal life, you'll have actual weight gain that is due to permanent fat accumulation as a result of estrogen loss.
      Don't confuse bloating with weight gain. HRT cannot make you gain weight. Menopause itself can (and does).
      Women make the grave mistake of deciding to quit HRT because they blame it for their weight gain. It's completely backward. HRT will help you avoid weight gain, not contribute to it.

    Thank you again for the effort and passion you put in bringing all this information to us...learned sooo much from you and I'm committed to have a healthy lifestyle...I have a question for you: it'a a good ideea to take DHEA to improve sex drive and for general antiaging ?

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  6 лет назад +1

      You should watch video 44.
      DHEA will increase your sex drive. And DHEA does decrease as you age. So, some women like to take it.
      But, you know that everything has both advantages AND disadvantages.
      DHEA is likely to cause masculinizing side effects, such as whiskers, aggression, and acne. So, you have to balance the benefits and risks.

    Dear Dr. Taylor,
    I am so very grateful that my good friend, Bethany, introduced me to your videos. Based upon what you have presented, I have decided to use hormone replacement therapy to manage my menopause. I had what I would call a partially successful visit with my GYN as she agreed to give me a prescription for the middle dosage of Prempro (0.45mg/1.5mg) but was not agreeable to the 0.625mg/2.5mg dosage. When I asked to have the higher dosage, my doctor talked about the 2002 WHI study. I am due to go back in August and would like to ask if there is any particular study/documentation that I could take showing the minimum dosages necessary to prevent the diseases associated with menopause? I'm hoping that if I have that on hand, she will be agreeable to giving me the prescription for the higher dosage of Prempro. I am also wondering if Menopause trained Physicians request bloodwork to check the levels of hormones while a patient is on the therapy regime?
    Thank you for your insight and teachings!

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  6 лет назад

      Dawn,
      One of the things I do for you in these videos is teach you precisely how to go about giving you what you want. In video 100, I taught you the "politically correct" way to request HRT. And, designating prevention of diseases is a sure-fire way to shoot yourself in the foot.
      In video 99, I taught you the difference between the primary and secondary uses of HRT. And that's the key to video 100. Of course, video 98 is the key to video 99.
      Go back and watch these videos in order (98, 99, 100).
      When you go back in August, you need to designate TERRIBLE symptoms of menopause as the reason you need a higher dosage. It will make sense to you once you watch these three videos in order.
      There is no need for blood work unless you just want it. There are no "perfect ranges" for estrogen. Use your "symptoms" and your bone density tests as a guide. Know that prevention of heart attack, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's prevention require a certain minimal dosage (Video 85).
      Make sure your provider really IS a menopause specialist. Most of the professionals delivering menopause care only know the basics.
      If you live in North America, you might have a menopause specialist near you. Here's how you can find one:
      Go to www.menopause.org (North American Menopause Society).
      Click on the tab "For Women."
      Click on the drop-down menu item "Find a Menopause Practitioner."
      Put in your zip code.
      All the menopause specialists near you will pop up.

    Menopause Taylor, what is your opinion of thermography? Do you think it is another good method of finding breast cancer early? Can it replace mammograms or be useful in addition to mammograms?

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  5 лет назад

      Thermography is another method for detecting breast cancer early. I do not think of it in terms of being better or worse than mammograms.
      For instance, if you have a mammogram that shows something uncertain, you may need an ultrasound, an aspiration, or a biopsy. That doesn't mean the mammogram was bad or that the ultrasound, aspiration, or biopsy could have replaced the mammogram. They just have the ability to show things that the mammogram itself cannot delineate.
      Thermography is similar. Sometimes, it can see things that are difficult to decipher on a mammogram.
      I think you could use either a mammogram or thermography as the first line of screening.

    Thank you once again for this wonderful video. Did you find any portuguese expert at the world congress on menopause?

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  6 лет назад

      Not a one! I was so disappointed. There were a few from Brazil, and a bunch from Europe and Scandinavia. I'm so sorry.
      I think the best thing to do is to ask some other doctors. Every medical community knows the other individuals in that community. So, ask your internist or generalist as well as any other medical professionals you know.
      People here where I live are always asking me for referrals.

    Bit unrelated to this video MB ....but PLEASE could you do some kind of video that addresses how HRT can intefere with thyroid medication....??HRT increases thyroid binding globulin and therefore there is less available thyroid hormone to get to the cells...since starting HRT after watching many of your tutorials I became more ill and after researching came across this fact and realised I needed an increase in my medication .Its something my doctor had not even spoke about.If your are not suffering with hypothyroidism it doesn’t effect you in that way but it may be worth a mention/look at as hypo and menopause symptoms can be similar and present usually at the same age and so many people have this condition and may after starting HRT decide to stop taking it as their symptoms appear to becoming worse but it may be that the thyroid levels need looking at and may need an increase instead alongside taking HRT .

      I have a video about thyroid disease and HRT on my syllabus. I've made sure to cover everything. But, it's not coming up for a while.
      And you are absolutely right. HRT does affect your body's ability to use thyroid hormone. In fact, whenever a woman who has thyroid disease gets pregnant, we check her thyroid function tests every couple of months (or even more frequently) because her thyroid medication needs change widely throughout the pregnancy.
      I cannot believe that none of your doctors mentioned this. It's very basic medicine.
      Every time you make any changes in your HRT, be sure to check your thyroid hormone levels. I've written this to many women in many of these comments.

    My family doctor, and most doctors I've seen, have those biased filters and don't want to believe that what I may have is possible. My problem for the last four years can be linked to one damn Zika carrying mosquito in Roatan that bit me. I got sick, and two doctors never heard WHERE I'd been. Six weeks later the revelation happened in the firm of a email confirming Zika cases in cruise passengers when we were there and the ports.
    Four years and a downward spiral the neurologists dismiss the connections and refuse to do the research and homework I've done to connect the dots. It's happening again with a different doctor and it's frustrating. Do some research and find that it's completely in the realm of possibility instead of dismissing it as something else.
    That doctors I dealt with at gyno oncology were total opposite and amazing. They listen and evaluate the information and came up with the same thought I had girl parts gotta go! Ya, the mass that MRI found too....

      Well, you are now seeing the real logic in what I teach you. Facts make sense.
      It doesn't make sense to assume that the very hormone that your own body produced your entire adult life ... the one that made you feel wonderful, has suddenly become poisonous to your body. That's just not logical.
      You're realizing that having the ability to make sense out of things is very powerful. It will help you tremendously for the rest of your life.

      You need to remind the doctor that it's YOUR body and you want the meds.

    My GYN just called me to catch up. He is very open and is learning some new things he has applied to be able to to administer Mona Lisa touch. Very happy about that! I was the subject of an international "news" story that was 100% false where I was called a drug addicted prostitute. So I am not a fan of the "news"! What you are saying is true in general about people not wanting to hear something that conflicts with their beliefs. That is true in general. I am always open to truth! I don't really do well with people who are not fans of the truth! I was called once many years ago when i was a nanny. Someone I dont remember who was doing a study about breast feeding. Because I had an experience that conflicted with the results they wanted that decided not to use my interview and only those that agreed with them. I wanted only herbs. But When that doctor I am having consultations with told me I needed Estradiol I got Estradiol! Most of us have to deal with our doctors biases also! Thanks for your hard work on these videos!

    I’ve watched all 105 of your videos and I’m sure you addressed this question but I can’t for the life of me remember. The question is, have you/will you be doing a “How to talk to your Gyno-101”? (And how to get more time in the exam room?)

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  6 лет назад

      Oh, I am so sorry for this tardy reply. The RUclips comments on my end are supposed to line up all the new ones so that I don’t have to search for them one-video-at-a-time. And most of the time, it works. But occasionally (as in this case), a comment doesn’t appear in the line-up. I apologize profusely for the delay.
      Please tell me more specifically what you want here. Do you want to know how to talk to your gyn MD generally, or how to address something in particular?

    Very condescending video Barbie. We are not uneducated, we are trying to get the unbiased answers but our simple questions are not being answered. Also, the pitfalls are actually that you have so called ‘experts’ saying completely opposite things. You say to graze every 2 hours, other people say to do intermittent fasting for at least 14 hours. Only one option is correct, but who do you believe, this is the annoying problem.

      You should believe our own body by experimenting to see what works best FOR YOU. Nobody else can tell you what will work best for you. It doesn't matter what works best for anybody else. Nothing is right for everybody.
      In consultations, I tailor everything specifically TO YOU. These videos are merely basic education on the science. But how it applies to you requires tailoring.
