Before we sightread this in my band class (I'm in the Wind Symphony at my school) my band director took a moment to tell us a story about a girl who goes to school with his son that died of cancer at age 16. He then said to us "Think of someone close to you who's died. If you have nothing else to play for, play for them." When we got to the moment of the piece I was in tears. I truly love making music. Nothing is as beautiful as music.
We played this at our honors band in high school. That was the most memorable concert I have EVER played. When we finished, there was not a dry eye in the audience. Even the conductor cried. Every musician knew... it was perfect. “There will be rest, and sure stars shining over the rooftops crowned with snow. A reign or rest, serene forgetting. The music of stillness, holy and low. I will make this world of my devising. Out of a dream in my lonely mind. I shall find the crystal of peace- above me stars I shall find.”
Same here my man. Played this my junior year. A majority of our band cried , I cried the director cried. Honestly was one of the best performances musically of my career in band.
To anyone thats played trumpet on this song its truly beautiful but the double high C is hell after that final moment that big sound and release then just casual notes above the staff i love it hell in pure beauty
Wesley Shores that’s cool, we just played this, and our conductor said he did this with a southern band, and they were crying too. Maybe we had the same guy 😂
Played this for Onondaga Senior High All-County, with Dr. Mickleson, the man who commissioned Frank Ticheli to create this piece upon the death of his father. By fa,r it was the most emotional playing experience in my life. He had tears as we played it, and by the concert, not an eye was dry, neither in the band nor the audience. It was the moment I really truely understood the power of music.
Yes. I had a very similar experience playing this piece in honor band. Most connection I've had between emotion and art of my entire life. possibly the most "spiritual" moment of my life. I came back to listen to it in grief tonight and am feeling a bit of what I felt that night. music is an incredibly force
That is true but it was dedicated to a dear friend of his who's son had died and.disnt know how to say express his sorrow other that dedicating this piece to their son
absolutely love this piece. i don’t think a piece has made me shed tears in forever. hands down has to be one of my favorites right next O Magnum Mysterium.
Just played this with the Utah All State Wind Symphony. Measures 72 and 84 bring me to tears every single time I play it. This will be an experience I won't soon forget
played this piece my sophomore year of high school and everyone was in tears (including my director who doesn’t show emotions) our directors words before giving us the piece were “think of people you love, play it emotionally, don’t think about the technical stuff that makes it so stuck in one spot, keep it moving, and most of all just feel the music” it was the most beautiful thing we played that year, we played and there was not a dry eye in the room at all
I've performed this twice with 2 different groups, and each time I have nearly been in tears at the end. One of the most moving pieces I have ever played. I love it.
"There Will Be Rest" by Sara Teasdale There will be rest, and sure stars shining Over the roof-tops crowned with snow, A reign of rest, serene forgetting, The music of stillness holy and low. I will make this world of my devising Out of a dream in my lonely mind. I shall find the crystal of peace, - above me Stars I shall find.
I played the trumpet solo in the beginning at the Down River All Starr Band Concert. Very beautiful piece. Frank Ticheli is one of my favorite composers.
I may get yelled at via youtube haha.... But I think that music with mistakes is sometimes the most beautiful. It's in human nature to make errors, and sometimes they can be... Just beautiful. Personally, the recording really touched my heart and made me happy and I think that's what music is for. That's all. :)
My high school orchestra played a strings version of this a few years back. Though, as a violinist I can say this was beautiful on strings, it's true beauty is in it's original orchestration for band. So beautiful, actually helped inspire a book I'm writing
My band plays this as our senior piece. It’s where seniors during our last concert get to pick at the end of the song which measure they would like to walk off the stage. It recognizes that we have done what we could and are now moving on to the next chapter. As a senior I am not ready for this
i played this piece at all northwest honor band with the most amazing conductor, an awesome band, and a small group of good friends. one of which is shipping off to the coast guard for six years. i will always charish this beautiful song and the people i got the privlidge to share it with
In a piece of music like this every part is essential; it adds to the overall color of the piece in some way, shape or fashion. Your part is just as riveting as all the others!
There will be rest, and sure stars shining Over the roof-tops crowned with snow, A reign of rest, serene forgetting, The music of stillness holy and low. I will make this world of my devising Out of a dream in my lonely mind. I shall find the crystal of peace, - above me Stars I shall find.
I have a soft spot for this piece. It just so happened that we euthanized my dog, who I had had for 14 years, hours before the concert. This piece was in my head when we were saying farewell. She was my buddy and my protector. I miss her.
That's so cool. :D I don't think Spitfire is my favorite. I think Heart Of The City is the best from Gilroy. My favorite piece of all time is probably The Saint and The City by Jacob de Haan
Nygel Harris The true professionalism behind it is that even after it happens, with a piece this quiet, you would be able to hear giggles or curses or what ever. Nothing like that happens. I think that in itself makes up for it.
I enjoy this song, but the intentional clashes bother me so much, so the first 10ish measures are terrible for me to play on 1st clarinet :( But it gets so much prettier as the piece progresses!
I agree. Tuning is very average. We've played this. We're State Champions and 3rd in Australia. Because little things like tuning and musicality is nice.
Get past that. See the big picture. Music is not about perfection. In this beautiful eight minutes, you pride yourself on seeing what's bad. Get past it.
This is a University Wind Ensemble from Texas???? I expected better!!! Squeaks, out of tune, and some bad tone from some players. I am sorry for being so critical but I used to look up to Texas music groups but this disappointed me so much :'(
they r all outta tune, clarinet squeaks, brass frackes, timing was a hair off but still not perfect i wonder wat happened. north caroline band sounds sooooo much better
Before we sightread this in my band class (I'm in the Wind Symphony at my school) my band director took a moment to tell us a story about a girl who goes to school with his son that died of cancer at age 16. You have no idea how right you are
And that is certainly an amazing band director that you had the privilege of working with!
We played this at our honors band in high school. That was the most memorable concert I have EVER played. When we finished, there was not a dry eye in the audience. Even the conductor cried. i think the beauty of this piece makes up for my 40 measures of rest in the beginning... and 15 at the end... this song is very appropriately named.
What do you play
Oh I feel so bad for you
mood I play oboe
@@huggle0486 I'm guessing trumpet.
Oh god speak for yourself. As a clarinet this was killer.
This was the only song I've performed that made me cry on stage. It forever holds a place in my soul and I am all the better for it.
Same here my man. Played this my junior year. A majority of our band cried , I cried the director cried. Honestly was one of the best performances musically of my career in band.

Just performed this for Alabama District Band.... got full body chills and cried while I was playing #noragrets

He did the same thing when he conducted this for my band! It was so touching

That was the choir piece, "there will be rest." "Rest" for band was commissioned by the Mikkelson family in memory of Dr. Mikkelson's father.
Thank you Frank Ticheli for another beautiful composition! Thank you ChrisTheFlautist for sharing this wonderful composition!
I remember playing this more than five years ago and it still gives me chills. 💕
absolutely love this piece. i don’t think a piece has made me shed tears in forever. hands down has to be one of my favorites right next O Magnum Mysterium.
My marching band played from about 5:10-7:00 for our ballad this year. Gives me chills every time I listen to this.
What band
Just played this with the Utah All State Wind Symphony. Measures 72 and 84 bring me to tears every single time I play it. This will be an experience I won't soon forget
We sight read this and made our wind ensemble teacher get emotional because of how beautiful it was. I love this song

Ευγενία In rehearsal our conductor shouted these words at us while we played, and we were all so confused until he explained.
I found this in the midst of a techno mix. God is everywhere. It actually pains me to ponder all of my blessings
5:53 on my timpani part I got slammed inside with alot of emotion. This song is just gorgeous in many ways as it is touching
I played the trumpet solo in the beginning at the Down River All Starr Band Concert. Very beautiful piece. Frank Ticheli is one of my favorite composers.
Play this pieces in my high school band. I love it! Now its one of my favorite songs. Some people at our concert cried.
We played this at District One Honor Band in Alabama and I have to say it is seriously one of my all time favorite pieces.
This song makes me cry performing. Absolutely beautiful piece
5:54-7:00 gives me chills every single time.
This song was dedicated to one of my teachers that died of cancer😔 every time I hear it I get the shivers
Played this in concert band for Cory snd state and won both. This is art at it's finest

lol you think that clarinet squeak and the poor oboe intonation is beautiful?
Ive come from the future to attack you via RUclips. So yeah take that
@@rocklinsreactions1807 thank God I've been waiting for someone to take me out and put me out of my misery
That squeak tho
Needs a new reed
👁👅

Playing in band.. love this one!
Absolutely beautiful.
I remember playing this song this last February at Iowa State Honor Band! Great song. - Clarinet player :)
Absolutely breathtaking. This piece, played at the KSHAA All-State Honour band, quite possibly changed my outlook on music in general. Brilliant.
Agreed Music soothes the soul and I enjoy every minute of my composing
There will be rest, and sure stars shining
Over the roof-tops crowned with snow,
A reign of rest, serene forgetting,
The music of stillness holy and low.

Dont worry about it . Just enjoy the music. Keep your criticism to yourself please
I was there, too :) I wish I could have video or audio of them playing it.

Our trombone ensemble is doing an arrangement for all trombones and it sounds fantastic!
We are playing at my school as well and it is the shit even though i have a 3rd part :(
I will make this world of my devising
Out of a dream in my lonely mind
I will find the crystal of peace, - above me
Stars I shall find.
The Dallas Wind Symphony has a recording from their album "Playing With Fire." It's a spectacular performance, far better than this one.
we played this in honors band today :D
im a trumpet player and we played this song in band their are like hardly any trumpet parts in this song but i love it anyways
I have a soft spot for this piece. It just so happened that we euthanized my dog, who I had had for 14 years, hours before the concert. This piece was in my head when we were saying farewell. She was my buddy and my protector. I miss her.

Along with Inchon by Robert W. Smith and Spitfire by Gary P. Gilroy
This recording doesn't do the piece justice. Such a beautiful piece.
Go home Kels. God needs you.
Me neither, but it was the only one I could find.

Listen around 1:30 for horns
ohmygod major clarinet squeak at about 2:17 NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Pros: amazing dynamics, accurate notes
Cons: poor intonation at parts, irregular tempo, squeak
but pretty much the whole song does :)
I'm sorry, where did the horns go?
2:17 lol
Get past that. See the big picture. Music is not about perfection. In this beautiful eight minutes, you pride yourself on seeing what's bad. Get past it.
Wow way to squeak in a professional recording. I would started the whole piece over. -_-
good, now point out all of the flubs in the horns
it was more of a sqawk.. lol
