  • The Conn 22B is a nice little horn with a warm sound. It is very agile and slots very well. Some of my students love this horn for solo work.😊

Just acquired one, and looking forward to seeing (and hearing) what it can do!

Awe a 38B.... don't have one of those yet, but it's on my list. Have a 36B constellation and love it.

I’d love to find one of those as my one true “vintage” Bb. Favored by William Vacchiano of the NY philharmonic.

These horns are so underrated. I even heard that Bud Herseth played one for a time.
Keep your eyes open. Some really nice ones come up on eBay from time to time at a really favorable price.

@@t.l.williams3684 you’re correct. Herseth did play one in his youth. However, he didn’t play it for the CSO audition like some have claimed.

How are the newer models from the 1990s ? Considering buying one.

The 22b from the 90's is a student model horn. Mostly modeled after the Director model. It is a solid horn, and plays well for a student model. A couple of my students have used them for marching band. Then tend to project nicely for outdoor use. 🙂

I have a 1928 Conn 22B New York Symphony and I love it. The tighter bore, though, meant I had to experiment with different mouthpieces to reduce the back pressure. I'm currently on a Schilke 14. Any thoughts on this?

      That is a nice horn. I also have a 1926 22B.
The small bore does tend to have a little more back pressure than the ML bores. I also tend to use a slightly "bigger" mouthpiece or one with a slightly bigger bore.
One thing that I have found to help me is to add mass to the mouthpiece like a KGU booster. Seems to allow the horn to vibrate a little more freely. Hope that helps.
