Criterion has just released 7 additional Toho classic tokusatsu/kaiju classics on their streaming service! Is an Ishiro Honda Box-Set on the way? These films are The Mysterians (1957), Varan: The Unbeleivable (1958), Atragon (1963), Matango (1963), Dogora (1964), Frankenstein Conquers the World (1965), and Space Amoeba (1970)!
"The man who gave the world Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and more, Ishiro Honda was the wizard behind the Japanese monster-movie (kaiju eiga) craze that thrilled legions of international fans in the 1950s and ’60s. Turning the trauma of nuclear attack into larger-than-life pop spectacle, Honda created ferociously entertaining special-effects extravaganzas that doubled as resonant metaphors for the devastation of World War II. This tribute to Honda’s ever-imaginative artistry features the creature features for which he is best remembered as well as lesser-known cult favorites like the psychedelic horror freakout MATANGO." -Criterion Channel

I have the previous US releases of these films but would more than love to have updated editions in any way. As much as I'd love upscaled quality in them, I'll take what they have to offer. I'm happy to add anything to my collection and happy when these films are more readily accessible.

Even as someone who also owns all of the old Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock DVD releases of these movies (and am more than satisfied with those releases) like yourself, I would actually still definitely buy a Criterion collection of them regardless of whether they receive substantial restorations or not. I would obviously *LOVE* for them to be upgraded from the versions Criterion is currently offering digitally, but I'd honestly still buy them just to show my support/thanks to Criterion for releasing these films physically again *at all* and to further illustrate to them that these movies are something that we want more of.
I'd also love to see them release some of Honda's non-kaiju/tokusatsu movies as well! I've personally never seen any of them, but I've always been quite interested in exploring the further filmographies of creatives behind classic kaiju films!

If Criterion does an Ishiro Honda set, the only films I would have concerns about are The Human Vapor (1960) and Gorath (1962) and to a lesser degree King Kong Escapes (1967) primarily due to rights complications.

I'd *KILL* for an official North American release of Gorath! It's *LONG* overdue for one... A release of the Japanese version of King Kong Escapes would be great too, but like you said, I highly doubt Universal will ever let it happen. It's a miracle we even got the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla in the Showa Godzilla Collection...

    What we know:
Criterion has the entirety of the Godzilla Showa Series - With an exception for King Kong vs Godzilla
In addition to these 7 films, Criterion also has Rodan and War of the Gargantuas
In addition to THAT they are evidently slowly acquiring the Heisei films, with Janus screenings of Return of Godzilla and Biollante featuring the Janus logo.
Criterion might be looking to position themselves as THE official partner for classic Toho Kaiju and Godzilla films. They aren't continuing to pursue these films for no good reason. They are clearly looking to bolster their catalog and continue to be in bed with Toho.
I think they are playing a long game. I think they perhaps intend to sweet-talk Toho into a "Partnership" when it comes to restoring and releasing these films onto physical media. Perhaps splitting the cost and effort of the restorations and in return having access to them for home media releases with a LOT more freedom from Toho.
Criterion has to pay the bills as well, Spine 1000 evidently performed VERY well for them, and we all know how compromised it was as a release. Maybe they are looking for a way to dig in deeper with Toho, provide genuine A-grade quality releases of all of these films in the near future by capitalizing on the brand strength of Godzilla.
From the 2nd half of this year to March of next year...Godzilla is going to receive a TV series on Apple, a Japanese film from Toho and a US film from Legendary, and then in 2024 Godzilla as a franchise is going to celebrate its 70 year anniversary.
That is a string of 3 major releases and a huge anniversary. If Criterion was waiting to "Strike while the iron is hot" on the Godzilla brand, or the Toho-Kaiju genre overall....I don't think they could pick a better window. If they have been slowly cooking up something epic alongside Toho for the last several years....then NOW is the time to unleash it.
I hope we get MULTIPLE VOLUMES of releases that put the Arrow Gamera Box Set to shame.

With the 70th anniversary of Godzilla coming in 2024...I would love to see that Criterion is cooking up some massive plans for the celebration. We know their release of the original Godzilla sold well or they never would have gone for the Showa Era for Spine #1000
We know Spine #1000 sold well for them, as it brought prestige Criterion fans together with die hard Kaiju fans and even superficial Godzilla fans of the new era.
We can only hope that Criterion is striking deals and making acquisitions, and greasing Toho's wheels a bit, in order to allow themselves to be fully unleashed in 2024 for multiple Godzilla/Kaiju Box Sets
Toho is bringing in Godzilla's 70th anniversary early with a new film on November 3rd 2023....from there, 2024 is the proper 70th anniversary and we know WB is releasing the Godzilla vs Kong sequel in March.
Hopefully Criterion could release the entire Toho catalog of Godzilla films on Blu Ray throughout 2024, across multiple Box Sets.

It all depends on Toho, nokt Criterion

    • @creategreatness8823
      @creategreatness8823 Год назад

@@ANProductionsOfficialChannel Of course, I just hope that Criterion is trying to do what they can to grease the wheels and make Toho as amenable as possible. Toho was quite permissive when Criterion released the original film....but then for the Showa Era set they were much more restrictive.
So hopefully...if Criterion simply continues to foster a good relationship and dynamic with Toho, one day they will be given the proverbial "keys to the castle" for the 70th anniversary.

My dream for 2024 would be for Criterion and Toho to collaborate on finishing up all of the 4K restorations and for Criterion to release the entire Toho Godzilla Catalog throughout 2024 across 5 volumes:
2 Volumes for the Showa Era - Which might create room to include some non-Godzilla Kaiju films
    1 for the Heisei Era
    1 for the Millennium Era
1 for the "modern era" consisting of Shin, the anime films, and the 2023 film

The thought of a Criterion edition of Hammer Horror made little hearts start swirling around my head...but it would probably be a rights nightmare to make happen.

That is 100% why it is not going to happen. Maybe for a couple of entries (most likely Curse of Frankenstein OR Horror of Dracula). But nothing else.

If criterion does put out a ishiro Honda box set, it would be awesome if they were able to aquire the 4k restorations for frankenstein vs baragon, and matango!
