It is called "string lining". Light cars in the middle of the train literally get pulled off the tracks on a turn. It actually happens all the time.
Exactly!
That appears to be a tight curve from this angle!
Since "it actually happens all the time," why can't smart people adjust the configuration by staggering heavy cars with light cars to mitigate / eliminate the risk of it happening again?
@@kevstir541 Sometimes the not doing of it is a lack of concern, and sometimes the not doing of it is because of the order in which cars or groups of cars need to be delivered; plus the presence of or the lack of time on the clock and/or trackage on the ground for collecting cars which were placed elsewhere within the train and regrouping them upon delivery.
We don't have smart people doing important jobs anymore, that makes things scary
@@CWnCW2014 It's called SAVING MONEY.
For those who have never worked in the railroad industry, derailments happen regularly, and the vast majority of them are minor. They are cleaned up in a day or two. Depending on clean up costs, and how long the bridge is closed, this could be considered a relatively minor derailment. Examples of major derailments would be East Palestine, Ohio, and the one that happened in New Mexico a few days ago, where there are chemical leaks, fires, major equipment damage, injuries, deaths, or millions of dollars in damage and clean up costs. Relative to the number freight trains that operate daily without incident, major derailments are rare. Yes, railroads should be held accountable for the dangerous conditions they have allowed their greed to create, and they certainly deserve increased scrutiny and public attention. However, there are no conspiracies--just increased media coverage, poor corporate leadership, bad corporate decisions, and greed.
Stringlining issue. Those centerbeam cars are way to light for that long heavy train. They should've placed them towards the rear end of the train.
This was not a failure of the railroad cars, tracks or the bridge. It is not a political failure. It's a human error in assembling the string of cars for that trip. Anybody who has ever had model trains has seen this. It's called "String lining" as those light, empty lumber cars in the middle were pulled off the tracks by the rest of the heavier cars because the turn was tight and the train was assembled in the wrong order.
Sometimes people just don't earn their pay.
Open your eyes!

I want to fault the trainmaster or yardmaster on the consist sequence of cars. Putting a light-weight (empty) center-beam railcar in the middle of a long train is very prone to accident when going through sharp curves. This is very evident with derails on the Horseshoe Curve.
Empty centerbeam cars -what could possibly go wrong???
Just from the thumbnail, the center beam car just stringlined
Yep, enpty center beams at fault, sharp curve empty center beam, and loaded cars ahead and behind.
Yep, those two empty bulk head flats in the middle of a heavy train going around a sharp curve will do it every time. Those two cars should have been on the rear of the train. Been there done that.
Stringline derailment. Thats quite a tight curve. 🇬🇧
I dislike what’s happening in this world as much if not more than anyone… but like multiple other people have correctly commented; it was caused by incorrect placement of the freight cars we see in the video. Those cars are called “centerbeams”, they’re mostly used for lumber and sometimes wallboard/drywall. They have to be placed in the rear third of the train when empty or else there’s a good chance for derailment. Whether it’s a train, truck, boat plane, donkey/mule, or even your kitchen cupboards, you have to place the heavy cargo and likewise the light and empty cargo where it’s meant to go. It’s boneheads not following “Railroad 101”, not a sneak attack, not a cyber attack, not $hitty infrastructure, etc.
LOL Center beam car tipped over….. GEE, I am surprised!
Two light weight cars between heavy cars on a tight curve and somethng has to give!
Not sure where on the train that empty center beam car is, but it probably should have been put further towards the back. This happens way too much.
It's called a string line derailment. Who's the genius that put an empty bulkhead flatcar in the middle of a consist ??
Blame it on the computer that printed the assembly order.
Train shuts down Steel Bridge?
...But aren't they *all* made out of steel?
Thank you thank you, tip your waiter!
Let me guess - the Rail company had a lay- off recently, then the new replacement s havent the experience, albiet the signatures indicate the videos have been watched.
It’s like the old days with putting wooden trains in the wrong order. As many others are saying, centerbeam should not have been in the middle of the train like that.
More than likely another symptom of kicking the can down the road.

It's no coincidence

Lots of work going in the video there 4 guys to decide if the train is derailed or not. No wonder theres a derailments almost daily. They could at least look busy or pretend to do something.

After that bridge collapse Baltimore, I understand why they don't want to take any risks.
Looks like they need some safety bumpers so that when it does hit the bridge it just slides by without hitting the support columns.
This always used to happen when I played with my trainsets as a kid.
Another bridge issue? Seems like a new trend.
No bad placement of empty center beam cars, trainmaster at fault for assembly of cars

@@kittyrodgers8078 So what its nothing new, look it up.
Its a standard precaution to shut a bridge down until it can be inspected after any kind of impact on supports. The bridge had nothing to do with causing the actual accident.
This is a very unfortunate incident.
What a sharp turn rail?
1,400 train derailments a year and no one is doing anything about. The vast majority are due to neglected maintenance.

Ahhh. Coincidence? 🤔

I’d have to know what a timetable speed is for that curve. And then check their tapes to see if they exceeded said speed.
10 mph ! That curve is the sharpest curve in the us
@@MarkMack1982 looking at the way it was built. Pretty sure speed had something to do with it. Considering the fact that they are long draw bars. Even though it’s rated for 10 mph. I’d do no more than 5-8.
@@GFUS It's not speed, it's light, unloaded cars in the middle of a train, that didn't have enough weight to stay on the tracks.
@@GFUS Lightweight centerbeam cars in the middle of a heavy train are prone to derailing (stringlining) on a sharp curve. Speed has nothing to do with this one. Weight distribution did it.

Or nationalise them.
Railroads do not receive tax subsidies or other federal money
Nope, the issue here is simple physics, the 2 empty center beam cars caused the derailment. Who ever made of the train should have placed them near the end. They don't have the needed weight to handle the stress when going around sharp turns with load cars ahead and the rest of the loaded train behind.
@@Barklordnationalise them? Are you insane? None of that money would ever make it to where it's supposed to go. It would be picked clean by corrupt politicians. Or it would be used to fund a foreign war somewhere, that specific politicians have some unknown dealings with.

Breaking news these people make me sick
Center beam flat cars always derail.....
Well nothing lasts forever. I’m not sure if we have regular maintenance if the tracks in America. Perhaps the steel is beginning to fail at an alarming rate. Although I think the trains that had the hazardous materials on them were purposely derailed .
nah its poor management here, whomever allowed this particular consist to be assemble was either incompetent or missed the fact they'd put empty cars in the middle of a long heavy train. The tracks themselves might need some repairs, but overall not the worst. Though iirc the contents of what on these trains are unknown, and aren't publicly known even by local, and federal government as freight companies don't really care on telling anyone what they are hauling unless there is a derailment.
Oh and pretty much safe to assume most trains these days are hauling bulk hazardous materials these days as its makes em more money, granted they are at the same time not properly maintaining the rails as doing so would cost more than to doing it. Mainly because if they cut costs on maintenance, and crew size it''d mean they reduce their expenses and that'll make the numbers on the book look good and better dividend to pay their shareholders. You could say its profitable letting whole rail network fall apart than to fix and maintain it (which is also profitable, but requires investing big, and long term thinking)

Seems strange the train has tipped into the curve instead of tipping out.
The empty center beam cars don't have enough weight to keep on the tracks in the middle of a heavy train.
It's like pulling a curved piece of string from both ends, it tries to straighten itself and yoinks whatever is in the middle if it's not heavy enough to keep itself anchored to the tracks.

Wrong. We already know its poor weight management. Cars in the middle being to light with heavy cars on the ends caused the derail.
